Athelstan and Ragnar were soulmates, and while Ragnar and lagertha were meant to be together and always loved each other, they were not fated so, and they were not soulmates, the term (soulmate) does not always refer to sexual or romantic love, my interpretation of the word is a relationship that is above all, a relationship that when ruined and destroyed, the lives of those in the relationship are never the same, ragnars downfall only came when Athelstan died, he could not live without him, so he chose not to live at all. of course, it can be debated that Ragnar went to England to die so he can escape his fate (he didn't) or countless other reasons, but he also didn't want to live the life he lived anymore. without athelstan, his life was empty.
