The dueling bass singers on display here are epic. Avi has that smooth creamy timbre like butter, and Tim has that dark, smoky flavor like top shelf bourbon. Two great tastes that you might not necessarily think would taste this great together. Both the Pentatonix and Home Free rabbit holes are wide open. And the best news is, you don't have to choose one or the other. Sally forth, good sir! I can't wait to see what's next on your journey!

The guy that hit the first really low note is Avi Kaplan, formerly bass singer for Pentatonix. You can tell how much fun he's having by the expression on his face. The guy that sang the final low note is Tim Foust, bass singer for Home Free. Both men have beautiful voices and incredible ranges. To see some of Tim's lowest notes check out his collaboration with Peter Hollens on Misty Mountains. Avi is now doing solo work having left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons. You should check out his video called Change on the Rise. It's amazing.

Actually if you look closely, it wasn't Avi who hit that last low note...it was Tim Faust. You can see Avi change from knit hat to cowboy hat and hit a last few notes at the very end while Tim is still singing that low note.

Here's a list of great songs by them: End of the Road (range of talent by Rob, the bearded guy in glasses) Mayday (for how high Tim, the bass, and how low Chance, the baritone, can go) Folsom Prison Blues (because it's fun) Blue Ain't Your Color Misty Mountains (Peter Hollens, another great artist who should be reacted to, featuring Tim Faust) Just about anything by them. I haven't heard a bad song, yet.

@@myopiniondoesntmatterh9073 Interestingly, "Try Everything" has something that you don't hear very often in Home Free. There is a very short segment (and one chord in particular) in the middle of the arrangement where Chance, the baritone, is singing lead and Tim, the bass, takes the high part while Austin, the high tenor, takes the low part in an epic reversal of roles. It's great! Fun to listen to and definitely second the cautions to wait for 7-10 reactions before doing "Mayday."

You get a lot of fun in a song when you have two bass singers that can do insane things. Home Free's bass is Tim with a 5+ octave range and the guest on this song is the former PTX bass Avi who has a 5 octave range meaning that both can sing where they want. Tim, Avi and VoicePlays Geoff are in that category of having to self limit what they can do on studio equipment for fear of needing to pay for replacement costs so you will only really hear them go all out in live shows

Yeah, my two favorite bass voices combine to help make an amazing song. Both have large vocal ranges that sound good at all pitches, but Avi Kaplan has a super-rich bass, while Tim Foust is able to hit low notes that make the jaws drop on even the best basses out there. Like Pentatonix (whom Avi was a member of when this was filmed), Home Free is overloaded with talent. This two groups led the charge in making me a real fan of contemporary Acapella music.

Avi Kaplan "did he flip his vocals like that?" Yes. Avi has just shy of a 5 octave range and is the visiting bass on this and Tim Foust the other bass singer with Homefree has a 6 octave range. There is one more outrageous bass singer from American acappella bands named Geoff Castelluci of Voiceplay. You can find the 3 of them compared in "bass battles" on KZfaq alot. You have alot of Homefree fans responding to you so I will just talk about Avi. Avi is solo now but was heavily involved in various a cappella bands because true bass singers are pretty rare and he was the founding bass singer for Pentatonix. He left after 6 years from burnout took a year off from music entirely and is now a solo singer-songwriter. You can find him now under his own name, Avi Kaplan, singing a mix of blues, bluegrass, folk, country etc. with a small band. "Change on the Rise" is his biggest solo hit so far but an easy runner up is his cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya!" He just won't stay in one genre though. At Mt. San Antonio College (Mt Sac) he trained in opera, choral, acappella, classical, pop, country, jazz, gospel, rhythm-and-blues and even comedic songs. In 2008 he joined Fermata Nowhere, a group that became the first community college a cappella entrants to win the ICCA. Avi won an award for “Best Rhythm Section.” which the ICCA had changed to allow them to award it to a vocal bass. Avi later joined Singcopation, a jazz ensemble that won the Monterey Jazz Festival Competition in his first year. He had performed at venues worldwide, prior to Pentatonix including New York City's Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. was a member of Mt. SAC’s Singcopation champions which won best jazz distinction at the 2010 Monterey Jazz Festival and eight Downbeat best collegiate jazz vocal group awards; Fermata Nowhere’s winning the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in 2009; and the Chamber Singers and Singcopation’s clean sweep and Grand Prix Award at the American International Choral Festival in 2011. He is also world famous for his overtone singing. With Pentatonix he won 3 Grammies, 2 for arrangement instrumental or A cappella for Daftpunk medley 2015 and Dance of the SugarPlum Fairies 2016, and 1 for country duo with Dolly Parton on Jolene in 2017. Now an Americana/Roots singer-songwriter he sings alternately in bass or baritone as lead vocalist and young bass singers are covering his songs as fast as he publishes them. His biggest success so far has been "Change on the Rise". Which you can hear as the theme music for the Apple podcast Relative Unknown or recently in Resident Alien on SYFY, Feb 12, 2021 sampled on SO1 E03 @ 40:30 then 43:31 to the end.

Your next HF reaction should be How Great Thou Art highlighting the complexity of their arrangements, then Man of Constant Sorrow, followed by End of The Road, the Boys 2 Men Cover, Helplessly Hoping, a Crosby, Stills, and Nash cover, then Mayday, a Cam Cover which displays the octave range versatility of the bass singer.

Tim Foust (bass) has a 5 octave range (see his original song "Snow Globe"). Austin Brown (high tenor) and Rob Lundquist (lead tenor, beard & glasses) have a video "Two country singers try singing opera" that's astonishing. Thank you for playing this and for your reactions and analyses!

Avi Kaplan, Tim Foust, and Geoff Castalucci (the three BEST basses ever) have 4+ octave ranges or more. For Geoff, watch Voiceplay's The Oogie Boogie song, or Geoff's Headless Horseman. He also does a cover of 16 Tons that will floor you - because he sings all the parts, tenor to bass profundo

The end tag on this video is for a song co-written by Tim Foust called "Champagne Taste On A Beer Budget" and should be your next song just to see their humorous side and with a quick cameo at the end by Avi Kaplan (the second bass in this song). The guys are very serious musicians but have a great sense of humor and plain old fun and aren't afraid of laughing at themselves. If you do Misty Mountains as many have requested, note at the end that Tim's bass note actually vibrates the camera.

Tim Foust, the bass for Home Free, is INSANE. They competed (and won) an a capella singing competition show called The Singoff. Judges for this show included singer- songwriter Jewel and a member of Boyz 2 Men. The first time they heard Tim got that bass note, dude- that right there sealed their win.

This was one of the songs Home Free performed on the competition show The Sing-Off (which they won, for their season). The last bass note by Tim Foust just blew away the audience and judges. When they did the video for KZfaq, somehow Avi Kaplan (bass singer of Pentatonix) was invited to sing along. This was the result, and you can see they had a blast doing this arrangement.

Home Free is amazing. This featured Avi Kaplan of the group Pentatonix. Home Free won the NBC show the Sing Off in 2013 the year after Pentatonix won. They are friends. Avi was wearing the black beanie hat - he’s a bass. Home Free’s bass, Tim Foust sang the last note, a G#1. He has a 5 octave range and can sing tenor as well. They sing so well. Try Helplessly Hoping, In the Blood, End of the Road to hear more great harmonies. Good review!

"How is that humanly possible?" Tim Foust gets that reaction a lot. Geoff Castellucci (possibly spelled incorrectly), with Voice Play, can also hit the tenor rage, then drop down into the subharmonic bass range. The next song you should check out from Home Free is Helplessly Hoping. They have a different baritone, but the harmonies are insane.

Yep, Avi Kaplan is a guest artist on this one. He was in the Pentatonix up to about 2017. He was in his upper range and popped down using subharmonics. So they get a second bass on this. Then Tim (bass) sings this nice medium-high tenor part, but clearly with huge bass voice undertones. At the end, Tim pushes out a G1 or so to just sort of vibrate under the song at the finish. Pentatonix won the 2011 Sing Off, I think and then Home Free won the next year. So they've known each other for a decade or so and traded techniques. So with Avi being a free agent after Pentatonix, he was free to do a collaboration (i.e. actually had time to do it).

No. Neither Tim nor Avi use subharmonics. They are natural basses. You can tell by listening to their speaking voices. Avi even said in a livestream during quarantine that he might learn it. Avi was just classically trained.

I just finished suggesting that you watch Ring of fire so I could see your reaction. Then I found your posted video, and couldn't contain myself, I was laughing so hard! Yes that is Avi Kaplan! He's no longer with Pentatonix but has gone solo, or at least was the last time I checked. I realize these videos are from a while back, but I'm just seeing them in my feed now. Thanks for giving me some joy tonight! God bless!

If you want to hear something truly amazing, check out PTX's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" it will blow your mind. Tchaikovsky' composed it to be done by an orchestra (no lyrics or vocals of any kind) and PTX does it acapella. And if you like those low notes, Avi hits one of his lowest notes, and Mitch hits one of his highest notes. It is mind blowing, and won them their second Grammy.
