In this video I show the basic process of making home made apple juice. I have never done this before, but it was really fun, and a terrific way of making use of all your surplus apples. Thank you Leif and Eva for lending us your juice press!

Watching Torbjorn work is restful. How can one person do so much at an easy pace. He never seems to rush or get upset at what he is doing. Nice products that you turn out. I love the fact that you will include the children when you can, and they seem to enyoy doing whatever is being done. If I could you would get two thumbs up.

Where I'm from in the US we call unfiltered apple juice apple cider - alcoholic apple cider is known as hard apple cider or just hard cider. A state park near me makes it every year using the same press and equipment from when the town was founded in the 1830s. I've done it a couple times there. Great video Torbjorn.

As a kid my grandmother had trees full of these huge black sour cherries supposedly brought over by our family from Germany well before the civil war. We would gather one weekend every summer and pick and seed cherries. Hands stained red for a week. Freezers l Ioaded with cherries. Her second husband didn't like the trees and slowly started killing them off.

You made not only cider, but a wonderful memory for the children. I made cider last weekend also. We have very similar interests. I used apples and also used Pears. Oddly, one can barely tell the difference in taste between the pear cider and the apple cider. I put about 20 liters in carboys with champagne yeast and an airlock. I cant compost tthe apple pulp because every deer in the county comes and eat them.Instead I added more sugar and will try to ferment those also. Best regards, Frank

I have had the pleasure of making pure, unadulterated apple juice in my youth. My Aunt and Uncle owned a farm that had heritage designation, with an existing orchard. Our two families had 12 kids so frugal was life. I remember taking pickup loads of apples to the processor. It was the last one in our area, and was over a century old . Completely wooden structure , including the press. Went home with gallons of juice. Some was frozen. Much was enjoyed. Great memories. Thanks

Haven't done this in a while. A mod you can make to the lip of the crusher is to file a drip line under the lip. Also, you can make "cakes" out of the crushed apple. If you grind it further down, to a mushy paste, and press it down (you can buy some presses, but it's simpler to make your own, basically a garlic crusher, but in the shape of a standard round biscuit) you can either let them dry naturally on paper in a dry place or dry them in a drier. Good chewy snack for winter times. Once i'm done making them, i snake them with a big needle on a rope and hang them in my attic inside a clean space i have for dry goods.
