The implication is that you should have saved $500 U.S. per year for 50 years and then built something with all the safety features that can be afforded in very few parts of the world. It stands to reason that if you are ingenious enough to come up with this device that you are also smart enough to periodically check it for safe function and are responsible enough to disable/dismantle it if or when it becomes unsafe. There are people who use their common sense to take care of themselves and there is an alarmingly large number of people who expect others to do it for them. Remember the height between the two floors is just 3metres, so nothing will happen even if it breaks.. (The person standing inside will take some impulse when the cubicle hits the ground). Nothing to worry about the safety

Safety boy Safety.....Its good thing you made it but take utmost care for the safety. Lots of dangers seen here. Caution to you. Before you start using it provide safety gate for entry and exit. Provide good all around guard for the balance weight. If rope cuts then not a big deal since its not that big fall. But just imagine you started going down and some child follows you and try to run in the lift from gallery passage...just imagine. Another thing some body is there at night just below the balance weight????? Horrible. All gates are to be interlocked with sensors . Please please make it Child proof, fools proof and imagine uneducated person, child just plays with the buttons in your absence.... Good try but Safety first...Bro

I’m wondering if putting a strip of aluminium down the vertical bar and then welding some Neodymium magnets to the lift sitting just above the aluminium might give you a useful and relatively cheap safety mechanism should the cable break? Otherwise known as an Eddy Current Brake.
