I resisted this simple change in my laundry routine for YEARS. It made no sense to me that this was the best way. I was so incredibly wrong, and the impact on my house as a whole was bigger than I imagined possible.

I struggled with laundry with five kids back in the 80s. Now with our last three boys at home (16 years between the 5th and 6th child), but not until they were all teens, I decided to clear off the dryer, get rid of laundry baskets, and fold out of the dryer. Since I started this new strategy I have never had baskets of clothes sitting around, mounds on the couch, or unfolded clothes in bedrooms. It’s been amazing! If only I would have done it 40+ years ago!

I do the same plus a few more tips: 1. Add an over the door multi hooks towel hanger to hang more hangers as you pull them out of the dryer (hang on lol 😂) 2. On laundry day gather all empty hangers from closets (I have a spot to keep them organized in the laundry room) 3. Only use a basket for underwear and socks, take it last straight to your bedroom, divide (or pair up 😉) and conquer! One load a day keeps the laundry monster away. Also take in consideration toddlers who love to jump on your fleshly clean and folded stacks on your couch or cats who love warm, clean, hair free laundry to cuddle in. That's enough motivation for me to stop doing laundry on couches ! Yup

I've always folded straight from the dryer. The clothes are still warm and won't get creased if folded or hung straight away. But if I'm really honest with myself, I did it because the house was so messy that there wasn't anywhere to put a pile of clothes from the dryer. There I've said it. Why I formed the habit may not be great, but that I did form the habit is something I've since been grateful for. For those who may resist and say it is a waste of time, remember - the laundry isn't done until it is folded and put away. That's part of the job. If you have piles of clothes laying around to be dealt with for days, then you have extended "laundry day" to be days long, even if all the washing and drying is completed.

This is what I do as well. My washer and dryer are in my basement and I like to do laundry during the day when I am taking care of my 5, 3, and 1 year old. While I can leave them playing upstairs long enough to switch clothes over and bring up the dry clothes I can't just leave leave unsupervised while I am folding the clothes as they come out of the dryer. As soon as it comes upstairs with me I sort, fold, and they help me put away their clothes.

I don’t have a true “laundry room”. I have a “laundry closet”, which is in a narrow hallway. It’s easier for me to take the clean laundry into my bedroom and fold it on the bed. We do a load of laundry nearly every day. This helps keep the loads small and easy to put away. :)

I use a laundry basket - if doing 2 loads (I usually do 2 loads once a week), I set the empty basket on the floor in front of the dryer, so that when I open the dryer, all I have to do is pull out the laundry and dump it in the basket. Then I take the clothes out of the washer, giving each item a shake or two to unclump them (makes a huge difference in drying time), throw them in the dryer, then take the basket to my bed, where I usually sit to fold/hang it (I hang almost everything - faster, easier, and takes far less energy for me; also means I only have 1 dresser drawer with clothes in it) while watching a movie or listening to an audiobook. If I don't have time/energy to put everything away right away (sometimes happens and nothing wrong with it), I hang everything that gets hung (so it doesn't winkle), then throw the stuff that doesn't matter if it gets wrinkled into the pillowcase (I always have at least one pillowcase in the load - I have 3, and change them every time I wash my hair, so 3 - though usually just 2 - easily lasts me the full week, but it ensures, that they still always get washed before they get gross; keeps my hair cleaner, too, because I'm not putting clean hair on a dirty pillowcase).

We've decluttered so much (thanks to the Take Your House Back Decluttering Course) that we only have small loads of laundry. I dry for 10 minutes then pull out anything that dried in that time (socks, undies) and hang all tops to air dry so there will be no wrinkles. Then I finish drying and fold the remaining pieces which I immediately put away. Laundry is SO much easier now. Thank you for all your words of wisdom. Oh, and please thank your editor for adding a chuckle at the end of your videos. You're one lucky mom!

There's a collapsable three-armed stand (looks like an umbrella skeleton) that I use to help me hang clothes up, right out of the dryer. I fully agree that handling clean clothes ONCE and being all finished with them is such a huge relief! I started this 2 years ago.TOTAL GAME CHANGER. If Hubby and I are watching a movie we pause the DVD or streaming while I fold (Hubby would help fold but I’m picky about it so I agreed to take it all on willingly if he agreed to pausing the movies as soon as the dryer buzzes). He usually turns his audiobook on or gets us a snack. Even with full loads it only takes a few minutes to fold and put away in drawers and hang up stuff in the closet. I highly recommend this idea.

Folding straight from the dryer has been a game changer for me too, been doing it for like 9 years I think. It only takes 5 minutes maybe 10 if its a big load or a lot of little things. & Im motivated to do it because if I don't I know the laundry will get backed up. I do a couple loads 5 days a week & definitely love not have laundry baskets full of clean laundry sitting around everywhere. I second this laundry strategy! 👕

Been doing this for years! SUCH a game-changer! Plus, stuff isn’t wrinkled, or if it is, I just spin it in the dryer briefly again. I take a laundry basket into the laundry room & arrange stuff in groups based on where it goes. I had a friend who used to pile laundry everywhere. Another friend & I referred to this as “panties on the couch.” No one wants to see that or to be horrified if someone drops by. Cheers!

I’ve gotta share a huge game-changer of my own. Stop sorting!! Give everyone their own hamper in their room. Do not mix the family laundry together. Sort clothes when you take them off (mostly for adults: cotton, jeans, etc). Wash each hamper as needed. The key here is that you spend zero time actually sorting to wash or after drying. Sorting takes the vast majority of your hands-on laundry time. If you can avoid sorting, you free up so much time and effort. My toddler has her own basket and I never have to separate tiny socks from our clothing. Her clothes get a wash on their own and everything goes right to her closet, rather than one load of laundry going to several rooms. Same with our laundry. My husband and I do mix our every day clothing because it all goes to the same place. I know that each hamper is good to go straight into the washer when it gets full, no need to sort out jeans from dress shirts from tshirts. Just dump and go. I also donated all my laundry baskets about six years ago. Laundry is seriously no big deal in our house anymore.
@stowie5790
@stowie5790 2 жыл бұрын
This was my game changer!! It makes the task so much easier…less steps, less time, less wrinkles. I hang most and what does not get hung is put into the laundry basket..I then can change the next load from the washer to the dryer (and not have to take another trip to the laundry room). The unfolded items are taken to the bedroom along with the hanging clothes, which go directly into the closet. I then take the items out of the laundry basket, fold them and put them away. I always challenge people to try it for one week and see if it makes a difference. I’m also the person who strips the beds and before leaving the room, I remake the bed with fresh sheets (I have two sets of sheets per bed). That way, I never, ever have an unmade bed to go back to - plus I wash my sheets and bath towels on the 1st and 15th of each month so no pondering how long it has been since the sheets were last washed.

There is a principle from the concept of Lean manufacturing (think Toyota) that corroborates the truth you describe. It’s called One Piece Flow. The maxim is that you minimize waste and increase efficiency (and speed) when you move a product through the production process to completion with maximum uninterrupted flow it is always faster than when you batch the process. It’s counterintuitive, but it works!

For me the reason the basket is not a great idea is because where would the basket go? I don't have a counter nearby to put the basket, so for me it would go on the floor. Then I'd be bending all the way down to the floor to pick up clothes to fold, rather than reaching in the dryer which in my case is stacked on top of the washer so it's at a much more convenient height. Everyone's situation is different though. Some people may have counters, or may not mind bending. But some of us would park the basket of clean clothes onto the couch so we could be comfortable while we fold... but it never really works that way. Couches are made to lounge on, not for doing work. For me it works a lot better to keep my work stations work-oriented and convenient, to finish a task in one swoop. Bringing work into my lounge areas just ruins both work and lounging for me.

Folding out of the dryer truly is a game changer. Most of my married life, the laundry has been in an unheated area of the house, so in winter months I've often brought the laundry in to fold. However, the same basic rule applies... I pull the laundry out and lay it on the dryer, put the clothes from the washer into the dryer, then gather up the dry clothes, go to some place warm, and immediately fold and put them away where they go. Love Reid's comments at the end of the videos.

Where I live we use clothes lines. Giant ones that often hold several loads of washing. So í do try real hard to deal with those baskets of clean clothes soon after the come in. Or we use the clothes straight out of the baskets. Dumping them out onto the lounge etc is a crime punishable by death :)

Guess what I'm doing while watching this video--folding laundry. ;) Our laundry room is a mud room, coat closet and utility closet while being so small that the door scrapes the dryer if you try to shut it, so folding in there requires being much more coordinated than I am. Since my cat considers any clean laundry his new favorite bed, waiting to fold laundry isn't an option either. I made a deal with myself, I can only watch videos while getting something else done, so I am usually waiting for a load to be dry so I can sit down and watch something. I do it at my desk, so I always have to have it tidy as well so there is room to fold. I think we tend to grow chores in our minds to be these big, time consuming tasks. Laundry math is very much like dishes math, if you just jump right in, it is almost done before you realize you started. If you leave it unattended, it grows exponentially. I finished folding, thinking of taking some clothes off of their hangers and washing them again. ;)

Sorting loads by destination was my biggest game changer. The kids share a dirty laundry basket. Hubs and I have one. There's a third for towels and stuff in the kitchen. We hang bath towels to dry and then toss them in the kitchen basket. There's a diaper pail and cloth diapers too around here. Each load happens about every fourth day, when the basket is full. It's working great. I'm hoping to fold faster once we unpack from moving enough to find the top of the dryer.

I can’t recommend it highly enough. I was possibly in my 30s when I began to fold off the line into the basket. I was so careful to do that with uniforms so I thought to try it with everything. I got rid of the “tv watching” folding laundry piles. Clothes, etc, were less creased (never iron clothes if I can help it) and had neat piles of clothes to put away. So much easier to do. It sped up the process. Putting away was 10 minutes max. I’m talking of 2 adults and 3 kids. Not a massive tribe to do for but enough to look for faster ways to do things. It also means if I’m interrupted it’s not a catastrophe to go back and finish. Like all good routines if it stops that mental moan and groan then continue. If all you achieve is feeling more efficient with your time or the task is finished rather than it becoming the next task then it’s still good. Decluttering will make this even easier as there will be room to put the clothes away quickly and easily. Love your work Dana. 💚🌲🇦🇺

Good thing is that they mostly do their own washing themselves, and on their own day. The problem comes when I do someone’s washing and leave it on the chair in the kitchen for them to collect, it never gets collected. So I need to try this and I can already see it being a winner. I do have chronic pain and mobility problems, but I think this is doable. You’re a genius Dana, and speak so much sense to people like us!

I have similar issues (3 teens + 2 preteens and mobility/chronic pain) and a husband who thinks his laundry responsibilities are limited to his own clothes and one towel for himself (must be nice🤐). Having assigned days for them is a great way to help fix this; thank you for sharing.

@@apriljk6557 that’s great, I hope it helps. It’s been life changing for us. Some of the kids are autistic etc and need a nudge or helping hand, so the rest of us don’t mind reminding them it’s their day, or if they’re at school, moving the done load to the dryer and putting the second load in. The older ones get that this is how a house works by us all helping each other 👍🏻 a good thing with this is that if they forget their day or don’t do enough on their day, it teaches them that they have to be better prepared for next weeks day. Or if they’re lucky they can nab a slot at weekends which tends to be for towels etc, and some overflow. Good luck 😊

I too realized this year that it was better to take it out of the dryer and fold it on top of the appliance and not leave the laundry room until the items were folded stacked and were carried to be put away. I was listening to recordings by Andrew J. Mellon, author of "Unstuff Your Life' who said the laundry is not done until it is washed, dried, folded/hung up and put away. It was like an epiphany. I knew it but hearing it from him at that moment really made it come to full understanding. .

It’s just me at home so this works. I’ll admit I’m not good at folding and putting away towels as soon as they’re dry, so I’ll pull the towels and washcloths out as I need them. Folding sheets is not even worth it. Especially the fitted ones that don't even give you the satisfaction of looking tidy when they are folded. I usually just chuck them into a bin, unfolded. Sometimes it's an underbed bin under the bed that gets the sheets; sometimes they're just tossed into a designated basket in my closet. Then the sheets are always in the room they're used in, they are out of sight, and easy to find.

You're right about this!! I do not have a washer and dryer at home anymore. Best thing for my laundry routine! Can't truly respect myself if I left the laundromat with 2 bags of unfolded laundry... so it's folded and organized before leaving the place for the laundry task, where I've dedicated my time to complete while I'm there!

Year's ago when I was pregnant with our second child and we didn't have a washer & dryer, my husband took all the laundry and our 3 year old to the laundromat. They came back a couple hours later laughing. They had taken a pair of blue jeans and a work shirt and had stuffed ALL the rest of the laundry into them and carried it into the apartment like it was an old friend they had run into. Yes, warm laundry fresh from the dryer stuffed into the legs of a pair of Levis. They thought it was hysterical. You know the wrinkles did not come out of those clothes until they were laundered again...and hung or folded properly. Oh, well...the boys had fun.

I have lines in the basement laundry area or outside when the weather is nice rather than a dryer. So I do a load every few days, but the concept is the same. Stuff comes off the line and is folded up as part of that step. I use plastic hangers, so hanging items are already on the hangers from drying, so they go straight into the closet. I bring all the empty hangers downstairs with the dirty clothes. There are literally three places clothes can be: clean and put away, dirty and in the hamper and in-between those two ( being worn or being laundred).

I am a one load a day person. I take care of things right out the washer if they will hang to dry, and the dryer if they are dried. I tried laundry day but it was too much laundry for me to deal with successfully. I personally need to take tasks in bite-sized pieces to get them accomplished. Otherwise, I'll get overwhelmed. I agree with Dana: Deal with laundry immediately so it never piles up somewhere and becomes a silent to-do list. Thanks Dana!

I have to come on here and tell you that for the last two weeks I FINALLY embraced folding my clothes right out of the dryer!! I’ve resisted this since I started laundry day a couple months ago but I finally decided to give it a try. My “laundry room” is in the garage. I have no place to fold. My washer and dryer are disgusting because I live in the desert and dust is a daily battle. BUT I just fold them directly into the basket! (I don’t use surfaces to fold things anyway, except sheets). I’m telling you, this is a game changer! I have four small kids and my laundry “day” leaks from Monday into Tuesday. But since I started folding right out of the dryer it isn’t now leaking into Wednesday and Thursday! I’m loving the fact that now when Monday rolls around again it feels like forever since I’ve done laundry🤣

I did this the other week, folding clothing straight off the washing line, what a game changer! I thought brilliant, I have to keep doing this...... several days later, I took the clothes off the line and forgot to fold it until I came upstairs... instead of doing it right then and there, I lied to myself and said I'd remember to fold it later and put it in the spare room! LOL I am going to have to be harder on myself I think! Thanks for the video

I typically don't use the dryer, but I hang my clothes on a clothesline to dry. I think I will try doing this as I take clothes off the line to fold them and put them in a clothes basket for who they belong to in my house. So have each person in my family have a basket for their folded clothes.

This is a wonderful strategy! Not to mention that if you catch the load while it’s still warm, it’s lovely to sort and fold🥰 Also, if there’s room in the laundry room to stash each person’s pile, they can pick it up at their leisure/in their time of need. That way you avoid the delivery route.😆

Oh my, have you been in my house this last week?! My husband just asked last week what he could do to help me get my laundry put away. 🤦🏼‍♀️ This was the idea that I came up with but have I put it into practice? Noooo... And I've spent an entire week winding my way between way too many laundry baskets. And my kid complained they had no socks, but I "can't" do more laundry cause there's no basket to put it in. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Gonna work on retraining my brain and give this a try!

I do nearly the same thing with a slight change. Every family member has his/her own laundry basket (usually holds one load) and on laundry day I get the baskets, wash/dry, and take the basket straight back to the bedroom to fold/hang in there. All of that person’s clothes are put away without me having to make multiple trips to different rooms. I do fold and stack towels at the dryer.

This is something my mother taught me to do growing up and I continue to do now. I have shelves above my washer & dryer also. What I did was put up a shower curtain rod in front of the shelves above washer and dryer as close to the ceiling as possible and still be able to put a clothes hanger on,, to hang things on instead of door knobs. Amazing that it fit perfectly from wall to wall.. Gives me somewhere to hang things to dry that I don't want in the dryer. It also still gives me access to everything on the shelves.

Another great video, Dana! I agree with you, although I don't have a dryer. What I do is dry my washing indoors, and then as soon as it's dry, put it away, which is much the same thing. I use foldable cloth boxes (the type with cardboard inside - the type that go in the cube shelves. So I have one for my room, one for my son's. I fold Konmarie style into the boxes. Then if someone turns up, I can disappear the boxes. I avoid that piles tipping over problem. Then I take the box to the room, and put them away.

I sometimes try and sort my laundry before I wash so I have loads that are just pants, loads that are just tops, etc.....makes it so much easier to fold/hang right from the dryer and then put away. This works best for a laundry day, not so much for those who run loads every day.

“Time yourself to fix all you delusions” you underestimate my delusions… Okay, but for real, this has been so helpful! I did laundry day for the first time last week and I told my friend, “I hate clean laundry.” That is ALWAYS where it gets out of control for me. Our laundry is in our basement, where I hate being, but this would change our whole house. I can’t always “take it there now” because of napping babies and toddlers in those rooms, but I can get it much closer.

YES- I can attest to this!! 👍👍👍 Folding/hanging straight from the dryer is like, the one chore tidbit that stuck with me from childhood. 🙃 Unfortunately, I have since fine tuned the bad habit of “ensuring” the shirts won’t get wrinkled while waiting to be hung by simply layering them …… but then I’d drape the stackS over “the chair” and not actually get around to hanging them. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤪 I have since-since implemented the GOOD habit of not delaying the hanger part. (A-duh, right?!! 🤪 haha)

My laundry room is right next to my kitchen so now that I have my island usually cleaned off like an adult(I am 62 btw) I really enjoy folding/processing ( who folds underwear? Just stack it I say) warm or hot laundry (Colorado so such a treat) from the basket on the island while I watch a favorite DVD in my kitchen blu-ray player or KZfaq video--like this one! It's like somebody else is doing the work when I discover all the clothes are ready to go upstairs and be put away, which I do immediately because as y'all have taught me, this will take less than 5 minutes so I DO IT NOW!

Hi Dana, Love all your videos! I've been a fold out of the dryer person since my kids were little. It IS such a game changer! I do it a little differently - I fold the clothes from the dryer, put the clothes from the washer in the dryer & start it running, then go take the folded laundry and put it away. I live that it's already folded when it leaves the laundry room! 🙂

Tried it and timed it-15 minutes! To be fair, there are 6 of us, so I was making stops to multiple bedrooms to put up, but I'd much rather spend 15 minutes getting it DONE than the hours of shuffling clean piles when we need to sit down, when company is coming, and then clean piles turn into, "is this clean?" piles 😂, requiring me to rewash completely! Going to keep this up-such a simple change, but it never occurred to me to fold straight out of the dryer, and I know this will have a massive impact on our home! Thank you!
