Gabriel is a former gang member with two strikes. A third strike will put him in jail for life. Through Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, he and other at-risk youth have found jobs and support as they build a new life for themselves and their families.
Jim McSherry's debut film, Homeboy, chronicles three former East LA gang members whose lives have always been entrenched in that culture - as they share their dignity in the struggle to leave their violent lives behind through the triumph of the human spirit. The film not only provides insight into a growing problem across the United States, as well as the world, but the opportunity to understand. McSherry hopes viewers who understand can then help change.

I grew up in the Barrio. Joining gangs was mandatory and a necessity. But it all changed after my first born I didn’t want him to grow up like I did so I quit the gang life after this. It was my decision but also a dangerous move. Not only was I threatened by own gang but also from former enemies. I decided to go back to school went into nursing in college and was even voted best clinical RN when I graduated. This was 37 years ago. My oldest son became a Doctor and my youngest son is a lawyer. I’m I lucky no way. I’m blessed and if I can do this ANYONE can. Al it takes is a change of thinking and determination that you are better than people think of you. Anyways Peace Love and be positive.

My respects to a homie that is making his changes. It's not easy, but it is possible when you ask god to guide you. I ran the streets since the age of thirteen. Faced an attempted murder at the age of 17. Did 10 years mostly on level four in California. Homeboy industries helped me remove my visible gang affiliated tattoos. I'm now 44 with a beautiful wife, three amazing kids and two granddaughters. Si se puede. Thank you farther . And stay strong in the walk.

The biggest factor in making the leap from gang member to a civil citizen is your ability to overcome pride. Pride is what makes gang members toe the line. This idea that somehow - you can't give up the gang life - or, alternatively, trying to prove yourself not only to others but to yourself. This mentality is difficult to overcome. However, once you overcome that mentality - the rest is easy. You learn to be your own man. As my old man use to tell us - "Ay que saber ganarse la vida." - translated - you need to learn how to make a living. The words come across stronger and more deeply rooted in Spanish. Once you come to the realization that this idea is what defines you as a man - life becomes much easier in this transition. It is that simple. Learn how to overcome pride. You avoid the conflict with anyone who confronts you. You avoid the conflict of giving in to peer pressure. You avoid the conflict of giving in to Life's vices. To learn to make a living - you learn to be responsible. You realize that responsibility is a solution to your problems. No excuses, no whining. You deal with the hand that this life has dealt you and you move on. There is no rescue. There is no help. It is you and you alone that must make the change. Once you try it - you will reap the benefits. There is no shortcut.

My peeps. U can do it u know? U really can. Change....is possible. Yes, it may seem impossible right now.....the hardest thing to do. And it probably is. But guess what? Its worth it. It really is. U can do this. I did. I changed....when i thought i was stuck like this forever. And when u take that first step....a whole other world opens up. Its better on this side. Being clean is better. Sober is better. Being out of prison is better. Not holding a gun is better. Not being in fear.....is better. Its better over here. U can do this. The door is always open. Its on u to step through. Thats all u have to do. Love and respect my peeps. 👊💯
