In this street interview, we explore the pressing issue of the current medicine shortage in the Solomon Islands. We ask residents if they are aware of the situation and gather their opinions on whether the government should introduce small fees in hospitals and clinics to address the crisis. Hear what the people of Honiara have to say about this critical healthcare challenge.

I heard last year there was a huge stock of medicine held at SIPA due to uncleared shipping and freight bills, it was alleged the director of one of the shipping companies flew to Honiara to discuss their arrears with the Ministry, but the executive did not meet him, so he returned without giving orders for release of the containers from Ports. If the shortage continues for some time, summon the PS and his executives to explain to this nation. Leaders can take responsibility, but their focus is at the legislative level. The executive of the ministry should be held accountable for the challenges as they are responsible for planning, budgeting and procurement of medical supplies etc. The Leadership of the responsible ministry must be proactive and not reactive going forward.

Why should the gov't impose some sort of fees as free will? That would mean double charge to citizens unless all citizens are tax exempted I will agree

I was admitted at NRH for 4 weeks. There were no panadols and the prescription given to obtain from the NRH pharmacy were out of stock. I was advised to go and pay from the private pharmacy which I did. A very sad situation but I hope something good is going to happen soon...👍👍👏👏

Thats very true. Even patients had to buy their own gauze's and bandages from private pharmacies in order for surgery to be carried out.

If the economy is down where do you expect these people would get the money to pay for the medication. This problem is the cause of misuse by MP. Do not compare SI with Aus , zero.

We need to be abit more realistic. To expect pipol to pay for any type of health care, Gavman mas show the way. Providing employment so pipol can pay for medicines, health services, would be a good start.. We dont need to help Gavman buy medicines..Responsibility blo gavman ya., With its revenue raising, hand outs from outside, they should be able to do it. Otherwise returnim responsibility ya lo pipol who are capable, obviously, we're not...

Can't refute this issue without the internal knowledge of how the ministry of health and human resources work inrelation to the citizens and the government. Great issue to cover🎉 Truly this is a big issue.

Population of SI is increasing each year, as such budget for medical supplies should increase too. For me I always pay medicine from pharmacy.. we are already paying for malaria test in the clinic..$5.00...moreover paying medicine as far as I'm concerned, we have no option but have to pay because it's important for our health and wellness. But then it comes back to employment opportunities, money generating schemes, for people, because 80%of people are in rural areas and do not have jobs..hao na bae oketa buym medicine when they don't have money..

Sad reality...And it gets worse..I think the government have our interest at heart but they are not prioritizing our needs ... despite millions of aid pumped into our country, we still don't experience its effects in most communities. Some places nmo benefit..

Tax payers money..used to purchase Medicines for the whole population. Its not free for the tax payers, but it's free for those people who are not employed or owned companies. Imposem fee lo okta people wea no paym tax. That would be fair enough. For those tax payers hem shud garem special health insurance allocated for them for coverem health blo okta. So many times okta politicians ya Noma benefit lo em..they covered their health, referrals etc.okta ordinary tax payers have nothing. Taem okta sick okta followm crowd to???? Emi gud for umi putim picture osem for people Luk save..u man no paym tax, u no complain nothing is free.

One more thought here, maybe next time try interview the sick people and ask too, how they are treated by medical professionals.so often we blame the Government for shortage of medicine but not so much on the care given to patients at the NRH..one big issue which journalist fail to report on. Too many negligence on duty too , going on behind the walls of NRH. Since SI is not an educated population many people don't know their rights as patients too ya.I tell you I have been subjected to negligence many times @ the hospital and if you go and ask people at the hospital, even on the streets, they will tell, how medical professionals neglected to give proper care and diagnosis to them.

Globally medication is not free, but we're lucky to receive free drugs. 1. Responsible authority to "set things in order" at the national level. 2. Create regulations and laws as guidelines for paying a reasonable amount for drug/ treatment. 3. High concentration on sustainable revenue to maintain medication chain flow.
