Join me as I reveal my main crop potato harvest all grown in 20L containers that I planted mid-April. Unfortunately, blight hit the allotment site whilst I was quarantining so it’s time to see how the ‘Myan Rose’, ‘Kind Edward’ and ‘Cara’ potatoes have faired.

IDEA. ...... Lift buckets up onto a screen, and empty content out, so that compost drops through, leaving clumps of compost, and potatoes. ...... Saves time and effort, as if you use a trailer or wheelbarrow, you simply wheel the compost to where needed. ...... Potatoes in buckets is so easy to do, anyone can do it, plus it makes use of odd corners of ground. ...... You can also wheel a bucket or two to your back door, and harvest just before you cook!

Takes me back to when i was a kid, potato picking following an old grey fergie tractor bent over with a basket all day picking up the spuds into a battered wire basket then tipping it into another old tractors trailer just edging along beside us, they were hard days but it helped us young ones then feel a sense of worth .At night our gang would meet up to play in the streets after dark go to the chip shop with our well earned cash ,then under the street lamps wed play kick out can, a bit of bulldog then maybe a bit of hedge bombing ,great days back then no computers just your own imagination and your push bike. im 63 now but its like yesterday.

I sometimes use two smaller ones for jacket potatoes. I microwave them until soft and then stick them in a hot oven for a few minutes. They don't taste microwaved, but it's fast. Many years I told my College professor about how I do them as she didn't like microwaved potatoes. She was surprised at how good they were.

I planted potatoes for the first time, German Butterballs, I was really excited about it. Didn't last long when dumped the container, I did one large container, 3 hills in the ground. To be far, everyone where I live says we just can't grow potatoes here, apparently maybe not even in a pot =^\ I will try again. Aaaand I've bought sweet potatoes that sometimes have black in them, really glad you mentioned that, I do cut that out or just throw it away depending on how bad it is, pretty crappy the grower still bags those, sold in the grocery not at market.

Hi Katrina. Nice video of your Potato Reveal. You asked for feedback on this years potato harvest. Well, I hate to be controversial, but the potatoes I grew direct in the soil did better than the ones I grew in buckets! Both were Charlotte Second Earlies. The only difference was I used peat free compost for the bucket grown potatoes. Both lots were fed with liquid seaweed. That's gardening! Enjoy all your Allotment Tours.

I had a really good potato year here in Germany. I had a variety that is ready for harvest near the end of July. And while the whole summer has been really wet the potato's didn't get blight. The tomato's did but much later, just in the last couple of weeks. So I'm really happy the potatoes were done and harvested way before that. I got 22kg from 14 plants, 1kg more than last year.

Take that compost and dump it into your compost bin or piles. That would provide the fuel that would kick start the process for getting your pile or bin going.

Yes, I live in Poland and this year we had a very small crop of potatoes. I think it is because summer was very late and hot and sunny days in summer were only a few. We have 10 raised beds 120x120cm for potatoes . In the year 2020 we had 4 big baskets of potatoes ( we eat it in 4 months) now we had maybe one.

Outstanding crop, well done. My potato crop was good this year at my Allotment in Norfolk. I was totally inspired by the Thai lady who was on Gardeners World way back last year, she lived in Somerset. I grew Thai Cucumbers, Loofahs. Had a few Cucumbers. The Loofah climbers totally overwhelmed my greenhouse to the extent that I couldn't get inside it, lots of yellow flowers but no Loofahs. I will try again next year.

SMALL! I grew most in pots and they produced all small. The ones in the ground disappeared. To be fair, the ones in the pots disappeared also at the top.and I dumped them as you did to find mine. The ones in the garden - well I didn't search as I didn't even know where to begin - But my garden was cold and dry for a month even though I watered, then it rained for two months and was severely HOT here in Florida. Armadillos tossed the seedlings out to get to damp ground worms when I watered due to the drought. Then the rabbits ate the cukes and squash seedlings then the deer ate all the squash and sweet potato leaves even thought I started them all three times! Last year I had tons of okra and roselle and none this year due to animals. They must have been very hungry! Even the Green Stalks planted with bush cukes were destroyed by white flies once it started raining every single day, heavy rain and cloudy skies for most of days with abnormally high heat. This was not a great garden year for most people is what I've heard. You did great with your potatoes considering you got some food!.

I readily sympathize with your troubles. I don't have armadillos but I have my own circus of critters to deal with. I don't mind sharing some with them but they don't seem to have the same ethic.

And Lincolnshire. (We always thought your accent reminds us of a friend who is from Lincolnshire). Happy to see your video. I have tried a different method and found successful, probably you can also give a try.. instead of filling the whole container with soil and compost, bone meal, fill a little above half of container. As the tuber forms keep backfilling the container with tiny wood hip/saw dust mix with soil. The filling will be airy, moist, preventing from drying. As the new tubers forms, you can backfill 5cm layers by layer. I got good results. Encourage every one to grow own food minimum possible

Great video! It looks like you have many weeds in your potatoe buckets. Here in Holland we are told to take out all the weeds early, otherwise they steel the nutients from the soil which could give you less and smaller potatoes.

If you don't have time to get down and water in the hot dry spells it's tough - I think you've done pretty well. The black plastic really heats up in the sun. I had a fantastic crop from my pink fir apples this year. 2 seeds per tub, just on concrete rather that on soil like yours but they're outside my back door so watering doesn't become a chore.

I grew in large grow bags this year and had the same problem with keeping them moist. I got a very small harvest from 6 large bags. However, I’m in zone 7 in the USA and have a longer growing season. So I took a few and planted them in the corners of my raised beds as an experiment. I pulled one just today that also looked like blight, and got 3-4 decent potatoes from it! The other plants are much healthier and so I’m waiting to see how they do when I pull them in another month or so. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I live in Texas. It was so wet this Spring and Summer. I sprayed Neem oil on my plants when they started shooting up. I stopped spraying because it was useless with all the rain. My plants got really tall then earwigs made their way into the bottom part of the stem. The plants started toppling over and drying. I did manage to get some new red potatoes off 1 plant early on. The rest were duds not spuds. I was about to dump the compost and reuse it when I noticed a small potato plant emerging. It was probably from a tiny potato that I missed. I am crossing my fingers for fall potatoes.

Maybe you should do a potato taste test one year like you did your chilli taste test. I enjoyed that video. A lot of growers making KZfaq make sowing/growing/harvesting videos but not so many taste tests. Say grow 3 similar types (e.g. 3 second early varieties) then do a cook and taste video once they're ready (as well as a yield comparison of course). It's my second year growing potatoes. I am absolutely sold on growing in containers have watched your videos and Simplify Gardening's videos. So many benefits. I had good success last year although I only grew one variety (Elfe). This year I am growing Sarpo Blue Danube (as I have heard they make great roast potatoes) and International Kidney AKA Jersey Royal just because Iove the taste and wanted a new potato as well as later one. Maybe I will try Cara next year. A few decent jacket sized potatoes would be nice.

It looks to my non-professional eye that the low/almost no yield from the first bucket was mainly because of lack of water. You didn't mention if you irrigated or just relied on rain water but seeing that all the pots were in the same area, if they were all getting the same amount of water it seems 'jolly strange' as you English say.

Picasso is another good one - its bred off Cara that gives a good sized tuber. As to compost I always used to use 50:50 peat (or peat free) and John innes. it makes them easier to water and holds a bit more nutrient. Add some Blood fish and Bone to your spent compost and use it for your Dahlia's :)

I've got mixed results with potted potatoes. 1 got nothing(no even the seed potato), the plant grew really well and big, perhaps I watered too much. The other potted potatoes yielded about 7 lbs of 3 to 4 inches of potatoes and some fingerlings as well. The ones in the ground were a lot bigger and yielded about 20 lbs with 3 plants. There is one that did particularly well was in the hugelkultur grow bed, which coincidently contain more inputs than the other methods. I put logs and branches on the bottom, lined with clippings and manures to help with the decomposition. second layer I put in rock dust and native soil. The top layer I have finished composts, vermiculite, rock dusts, DR earths soil, peat and a portion of native soil. the 3x6 bed had garlic, onion, lettuce, brassicas, shiso and the potato plant that grew in there last spring was a volunteer. They all grew very well. The only issue I saw in that bed was roly polies or pill bugs and a few cabbage moths caterpillars which the birds kept them in check. I am letting the rest of the plants go to seeds and dress up the soil in November and plant garlics again and see if it will create any problem next year. Sorry for rambling on, the focus was potatoes. Just yesterday I was inspecting the bed and found another volunteer potato plant came up! probably did not dig wide enough on my last harvest 2 months ago. 😃
