I drove from little Rock down to tutwiler Mississippi back in 73 to meet my gramps brother. It was the only time I saw him. He told me that grampa grew clover and saved seed from any plant having a 4 leaf! He was trying to create a new stain, at least to him in 1905.!!! That's where my love of gardening came from. I have been growing various kinds of vegetables hydroponically for about 3 years now. I started with peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce. They all tasted great, full of flavor. I have since grown spinach, basil, stevia and green beans. I have even just started trying to grow zucchini (I just got some flowers in the last week so nothing has set yet). I think when people say hydroponic vegetables taste bland, they may be referring to things they are buying in the grocery store. Foods that were still picked green and only ripened up in the back of a truck several hundreds or more miles from the grocery store. Love your channel, thanks for all the great information!

I really have positive envy for you. Whilst I do not think that life is in any way easy with what you do, your family definitely made the right decision to go with hydro farming. I only wish that I could afford land in the UK to do something similar. Regardless, I have a small setup in my garage that keeps me busy when not at work. Keep up the good work.

Yay, love strawberry hydroponics!

I think the reason why people think that hydroponic grown produce is flavorless, is because hydroponic tomatoes for instance, when I see them in the store, most of the time they are trucked in from afar: like from Canada (I live in South West Missouri). So the tomatoes are picked green so they will survive the journey, which causes them not to have the taste as a tomato that is picked at maturity.

We cut the tips of strawberry roots before we plant them in my country. I am not an expert but I heard that if the roots are bended while you plant, it affects the plant negatively. Great greenhouse by the way!

I to use Albion strawberry plants but just use Perlite in grow bags. I use Crop King's Hydro-Gro vine mix but water it down to 1.6 EC. It seems to work very well for Strawberries.

Make a dibber for you strawberry transplants. An old shovel handle cut and shaped like a pencil. Charles Dowding uses the dibber to plant everything. I use them too and also for transplanting from 72 cell to 4" pots. Good vid. I learned I can pollinate my strawberries with wind!!! Just like maters

Hi Devon. We just discovered your channel as we are doing research on Hydroponics. Strawberries are looking so tempting.... We were wondering how often do you run the heat in the greenhouse for the leafy greens. We are in Southern Ontario, so climate is very similar. With double poly greenhouse, we are trying to figure out how cold its gets inside winter time and how often do you need to run the heaters. Any info would be appreciated. Again, loving you channel.

We grow the majority of our strawberries in DWC beds so they are all bare root. We use to have them in media and haven't noticed any difference with the production. This year we're building out more troughs that can be overhead. Where did you get the Beto buckets? They can be crazy expensive!

I love your hydroponic system. What's the likelihood of switching the systems materials from petrol based plastic, to a sustainable material? Such as Hemp?

The strawberries are Albion and Seascape from Johnny's Seed. The white rail buckets were special order from CropKing. They do not have them listed on their site yet, and I was unable to find them any where online. I will update when I can get a link for them. The rail system is Doug's design.

great video! i have planted 200 albion's in stacking planters in soil this spring, but northern michigan weather isn't cooperating much. i've been running a propane heater in my small green house and hoping for sunshine. hope they produce well! Good Luck with your crop.

Make sure you keep your tunnel under 85 degrees with day-neutrals, or you'll see blossoms but fruit won't set. Fertilize routinely with P/K when you are blooming. Hit them with a more concentrated N and a humic April/May. I helped to develop some now patented day neutral varieties when I was at MSU. I grow one of them now commercially on a plasticulture system. The variety I grow out-performs and out-flavors both Albion and Seascape. I have berries May-July and August-October. If you ever want runners I'm in Michigan and can help to work out royalties with university and get your farm going with some.

Thankyou so much for sharing all your hard work and experiences online so we can learn . Just wondering what kind of plastic you use on your greenhouses. I have a lot of problems with light, either to much sun and lettuces wilt or too much shade and things grow too weak. I live in Mexico where we are high up and the sun is fierce. Maybe that has something to do with it. But it looks like you get a lot of sun too. Is there a shade factor in your covering? Such a great life you have...very inspiring.

Devon...have you looked into vertical hydroponic towers for strawberries? Isn't it a lot of vertical height waste for such short plants compared with tall growing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc? Even with the planters you have now, you might be able to create at least a two tier system with sufficient gap between each tier to prevent shading. Please ask your "evil genius" dad to try building a small scale two tier system in a corner. If it works, you can replicate throughout the greenhouse next season. No offense to Dad...a nice compliment, that's all! 😁 😁 Good luck! As always, you guys are doing an awesome job with your farm! Love it! Learning a lot, and hope to start a small farm one day! I had a question regarding the perlite/vermiculite mix you use with the strawberries and similar mixes for seedlings. I was thinking about doing a perlite type hydroponic tubs for growing onions and carrots. I have read that perlite and vermiculite is used for doing that but what would be the go to mixture assuming I wanted to start onions and carrots from seed with a dripper system with small reservoir at the bottom with a return line sorta like a dutch bucket. I currently have hydroponic dutch buckets for tomatoes with good success, and wanted to setup some 27 gal totes in a similar way to grow root crops.

On the subject of flavor in hydroponic foods , I read somewhere that a grower was having a problem with tasteless produce and he solved the problem by adding bat guano to the nutrients during the last few weeks before harvest .

Hi there love the videos. Silly question about the strawberries. Doe's the water dump out on the ground after its passed through the pot or does the strawberry plants pretty much use it up.

It's an impressive setup. I'm about to set one up. One suggestion is don't use Duracell batteries as they have a habit of leaking and destroying equipment. Use energizer.

Also, will you be growing more Chinese Long Beans and if so can they be grown as a Bush type bean? Lastly, have you tried to grow Strawberries using the KRATKY method?

I have heard that about hydroponic fruit. Some say it is bland. I grew a hydroponic cherry tomato in my AeroGarden and the tomatoes tasted just like tomatoes. I haven’t tried any other fruit. But I grow a lot of lettuce in my AeroGarden and it tastes great. No dirt or bugs either!

What people don't understand is that hydroponic and aquaponics make sure that the plant has everything it needs that are readily available, so it takes far less, to get far more, as those in soil, have to go looking for what they need, by growing more roots, which takes time. I have found that strawberries are better in 6 inch gutter, with a fine grill put in half way up the inside of the gutter, and you can then circulate the water, then your not wasting nutrients. They also like cool temps in the evenings.
