Hi Gary, Thank you for bringing attention to such an important issue. The most important of all! Caring for our brothers and sisters. When society changes its moral values from being selfish to being selfless, things will start to improve.

If you want to see why there is a homeless issue in the USA, look at the workforce participation rate, go look at before 2007, and look now, you will see a big drop off when those homeless encampments appeared in late 2008. While there is a low unemployment rate, the participation rate never recovered.

Garry Thanks for talking about it. I lived in California and Chicago for 2 years. It insane to see so much wealth and poverty in the same place. I lived in EU for 25 years and 3 years in Seoul, South Korea. It is a culture problem (your video is helping there) but politician will never solves it. You will NEVER NEVER see this level of homeless issue in EU or Korea. It would be absurd for people. Please lead the entrepreneurs to find a solution and act on it. California CEOs have so much power, money and drive. Why don't they want to solve that problem ? That is the real question.

Gnarly is right. I volunteer at a homeless shelter in LA. They need more than shelter. Things like emotional support, behavior therapy, addiction treatment, occupational counseling, life coaching, psych treatment, physical therapy, nutrition, community, religion/god and more. Maybe some funding from the government to use the YC company technology that can help.

I'm an average IT person in Canada. If I do not get a job within 30 days, I will actually be completely bankrupt. I've never experienced something like this.

Same here in France. I graduated from the University of Sorbonne (CS) but haven't been able to find a job in tech. I'm still working full-time as a waiter and also have a student loan to payback, i regret going to school.

@@nimabayat5820 I have well more than 10 years experience, and I've been lucky to work at some amazing companies. It's surprising that every role I've applied to has not even interviewed me in the last few months. I feel like a fool as I turned down many roles 6 months ago. Don't give up, France has some amazing IT stuff going on.

Its not a "homeless"issue. Its a drug addiction issues. These people have to be institutionalized by force, otherwise they will peril in the streets. I've lost a brother 2yrs ago to alcoholism that started with drug abuse. He lost his job first, then car, then friends, then family. Every one tried to help him but no amount of love and persuasion could saved him. Shelters are drug free and have rules. Drug addicts don't like that. That's why they prefer the streets. There's no loving compassionate and persuasive way to convince a drug addict to get clean. It has to be by force and in a treatment center where they can't get out until they are clean.

Things like "Blunt force trauma" might have more impact if it was phrased as "One of the top 2 causes of death for homeless people is that someone beats them to death." I remember in SF, this girl asked me for money. Cute girl... Except that she'd obviously been beaten and parts of her face were swollen. And at least in some ways, she seemed like a completely normal and likable person. But she'd somehow ended up in the lifestyle of living on the street and using coffee to stay up all night, etc. (perhaps for safety reasons)

Even Buddha, the teacher of great compassion, said that compassion must be guided by wisdom. Compassion without wisdom often becomes blind. The word ‘compassion’ is derived from ‘compass,’ which signifies equal concern for all directions and all living beings. We must consider compassion for children and disabled individuals walking on the street, for girls and women afraid to walk alone in these areas, for the community living around homeless camps, for businesses suffering because the homeless deter customers, for nature polluted by urine and feces from the homeless, and so on.

Garry, Treat the tree at its roots first, then the branch, The rules of the game must change radically, Justice says the game should be stopped and a small part of it should not be addressed Look at the addict's past when he was a child, where he grew up, what he ate, what he watched on TV, what he heard, who raised and cared for him, in what city or neighborhood? All links in the interconnected chain are responsible for the final version of a person's mentality. What he thinks, what he believes, and what he does on a daily basis is a product of the past and other people, and must be taken into account, A good incubator produces a human being who conforms to all the conditions that incubated him when he was a seed Thinking is a product of the environment Healing begins with the sincere intentions of the doctor 👀

I wonder if some form of regulated Fentanyl use is possible. My brother had to take it after a surgery and he's like "The pain just vanished". And the pain has been quite unpleasant since he's had the surgery. But he's chosen to avoid forming a dependence on Fentanyl. But, considering it theoretically... Let's say that a homeless person is badly unhappy. And that you had enough medical staff to give them a regulated dose... Could a slow release version of Fentanyl reduce their pain enough to make their other life problems feel more approachable? Psilocybin for example, is showing major potential for treating depression... It may be that intelligent and careful use of drugs could produce better life outcomes, for people with specific issues.

In my country you would not find homeless people on the streets with tents, thanks god. But on the other hand unfortunately we do have some decent amount drug addicted. Also people rent apartments and struggle to afford their own house or even pay the bill, that's why our citizens trying to get to other countries to get paid well. Unfortunately it's super hard to get to the US legally, anyway hope one day people stop using drugs, and find passion and their life purpose.

Ask yourself, is there no drug addicts in Europe, Asia or Africa? The problem with American is the lack of communal or family connected living. In other countries the family members will simply take them home and cater for them. Secondly, the American construction is empowering homelessness

The guy at 5:33 is being ridiculous. They're not going to offer shelter to every homeless person at the encampment after they clean it up because there's not enough room.
