You're a great fabricator, you look young. I think it's awesome that you are putting your imagination and skills to use. That steel stock you're using isn't cheap. and I like your shop. I don't understand what you are saying, I have an auto shop in Colorado, and I think it's a great thing you are doing, maybe inspire others to think for their selves. Much respect.

Can you all stop complaining about subtitles, camera angles bla bla bla...and just appreciate the fact that this is real hardwork. It takes a lot of time, resources, filming, buying right items and above all, his expertise looks on point. Come on, give a dude at least some round of applause. A lotta third-world countries can't even think about what he is making to build kick-start their own military arsenals at a low level...technical schools or perhaps

@ time index 6m 29s: USE SAFETY GOGGLES when drilling. They are on your forehead. Put them over your eyes. "You can walk with a wooden leg, and you can chew with false teeth, but you CAN'T see with a glass eye." Safety first, safety last, safety always and everywhere - because Mother Nature has a perverse tendency to favor many of life's hidden flaws and undiscovered possibilities. "Anything that CAN go wrong, probably will, and at the worst possible moment." Best wishes and I am *SO* jealous! I wish I could build my own tank. I've been in love with armored vehicles since I built my first WW2 German Tiger plastic model tank kit in 4th grade, after watching Kelly's Hero's for the first time (back in the 1960's.) Thx for allowing me to experience the thrill vicariously, through you & your videos. Your hard work is much appreciated and I am grateful for your generosity in sharing the whole thing with all of us.

That rotating section in the undercarriage might create some belt tension issues and lead to detracking in terrain and especially during turns. Belt tension and design of runners and track centerpieces is king :-) Will follow the rest of the build with great interest (while thinking back to the years operating a Leopard 1 - 30 years ago). Very cool project!

DUDE, BANGING ON THOSE AXLES TO GET THROUGH THE PILLOW BLOCKS NOT A GOOD IDEA. YOU ARE LOOSENING UP THE BEARINGS BECAUSE THE INNER RACE IS NOT SUPPORTED. A BETTER WAY WOULD BE TO KEEP ALL MOUNTING BOLTS LOOSE THEN INSERT THE AXLES , WIGGLE THE BLOCKS A BIT TO GET BEST ALIGNMENT AND THEN TORQUE EVERYTHING UP. AS MY DAD USED TO TELL ME, IT AIN'T RIGHT IF YOU GOTTA FORCE IT.

Instead of holding the shafts in place with set screws, use a solid spacer between the bearing and wheel hub, and another between the nut at end of axle interior. Then a thru-bolt can be added in middle of spacer, if needed.
@jlucasound
@jlucasound 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed! The set screws are not enough. They will not stand up to the axial loads, i.e. when turning. (Axial; side to side). Putting spacers in will keep the distance between the hub and bearing fixed. Can't change.

Just a thought. When tightening the allen screw to the shafts, put some nail polish or something that'll rub off on the shaft, pull the shafts and drill a small dimple into the shaft for the screw to silt in just a little. Use Lock Tite on the screw when you reinstall the shaft. This instead of welding on the bearing. The heat of welding might take the temper out of the hardened steel bearing causing them to shatter. Here in America, those bearings run about $60.00+USD each on top of the time and labor of replacing the unit if they do shatter and fail. I've been considering a build like this for years from the old pickup's here on the farm. So far, your tutorial looks fairly simple and straightforward. Usually the best builds in my experience although I will be using all of the same rims even if it takes picking up a few at a local junkyard. When I start my build in the coming summer, I want uniformity of parts so that I can draw up the schematic and parts list to make repairs when it breaks and I WILL end up breaking it here and there. I'd say, the only other deviation from your original design here would be a rear suspension frame.

Well, I'm curious about where you're going with this so I suscribed. Consider 2 things: 1. it looks like you're tack welding your way through this so consider adding gusset pieces to your corners as it will add strenght to your frame (tack welding does not usually provides enough penetration to make a good and strong weld). 2. consider adding suspension to the rear swing arms otherwise when the arms swing up/down, you'll have heavy contact metal to metal. Spring, torsion bar, at the very least add some polyurethane bumpers to absorb the shock. Keep up the good work and l'm looking forward to see this thing rolling under it's own power.

I would hate to see you go through all this work for nothing. You should really use bearings or at least bushings on your pivot points. The holes in that thin wall tube will wallow right out in no time, creating slop that will cause binding and extra sheer forces that will snap your bolts. Also, please don't weld in short bursts like that. Those are nothing but a series of tacks. That makes for very weak welds. You should be looking to weld the entire length of each side of your piece in one go. Lastly, I will be absolutely shocked if those set screws on the axle bearings actually keep the axles.

If it breaks he can just fix it. It's not like he doesn't have the tools and has to farm it out to a shop. This looks like a proof-of-concept build anyways. Who cares if it isn't durable and it's longevity is crap. He's not building the space shuttle.
@KurNorock
@KurNorock 4 жыл бұрын
@Exodus Thanks for that pointless comment that has nothing to do with anything I said. Also, no. It isn't. Also, even IF that were true, so what? Also, even IF that were true, you'd have to use a LOT of fucking wood to get the same strength as metal and you'd end up with some huge ass thing that couldn't hold itself together. There is a reason ships made of wood could only be so large. To get bigger they HAD to be made of metal. If they made wood ship larger, they would tear themselves apart.
@KurNorock
@KurNorock 4 жыл бұрын
@@rwaitt14153 That's a really dumb thing to say. Yes, if it broke, he could just fix it. But smart people build it so that it doesn't break in the first place. Time spent repairing a break that could have been prevented is time wasted. Also, proof of concept? What like he's going to go into production on these things? No, he is just some guy building a tracked vehicle in his garage. This is a one-off, not a prototype. I'm willing to bet with all the time and money he's putting into this thing, HE cares if it is durable and lasts. What's the point of spending dozens, if not hundreds, of hours and probably well over $1000 just to build something that doesn't work, or falls apart on the first run?
