You guys are arguing about this project because you put in the USA perspective. I leave in Haiti where electricity is, for some area, a luxury, and on a summer the temperature of the house might rise to the 90s. I have an Inverter ( it is a system that will convert a 12-24 DC volt batterie to a 120 AC volt with a peak to up to 6000 Watts, based of the size of the inverter). The only problem is we can't run a Air Cond the whole night because the system will not stand. A use of a system like that is very helpful since the fan uses only 15 watts, that means the inverter can power it up to a week non stop. Respect for the idea.

An ac compressor isnt a hard fix tho. Seriously takes bout as long as making one of these to replace on a car
@369Bandido
@369Bandido Ай бұрын
@@soulbakinmany times however, it's more than just a compressor rebuild or replacement. If a car has not had AC for let's say 4 years or more, all the o-rings tend to dry up. The hard part is getting to some of your air dryer parts that are inside the dashboard, that require o-ring replacement. Dashes crack, break up, lose fasteners that you can't get anymore and you name it. This isn't always, but more than enough. That can be thousands of dollars.

This works amazingly well. I wasn't expecting such a major impact. Had to shut it off because made my entire desk and work area too cold for comfort. That's a good thing! We've been dealing with record heat in our otherwise moderate climate. Air conditioning is rare here. This was a life saver. But too cold for sitting too close for too long. Is more powerful than imagined. Initially I created a makeshift gasket/liner by stuffing Styrofoam strips around just the top gap portion between two buckets, outer bucket and slightly smaller inner bucket, to keep air from leaking from between the top of the two buckets. Worked. No leaks. Is ugly but effective. Thanks :)

+Andre Bell So you didn't insulate the entire space between the buckets? That's interesting.
@AndreBellCopywriter
@AndreBellCopywriter 8 жыл бұрын
+Myanameis Beestingz. Oh. I later dismantled my first attempt. Why? The bucket was freezing cold to the touch but the air coming out was just so-so at first. So I fully lined the bucket. I put tall Styrofoam strips between the two buckets. The strips were glued (Gorilla Glue) and stacked vertically. Then forced the smaller bucket inside. Super tight fit. This change made the air coming out colder than the first attempt. A liner would probably have been easier to work with. And probably more efficient. My strips are glued to the inside of bucket not glued to each other. Using Styrofoam I had on hand as a makeshift liner was more convenient than driving around searching for a liner. And my A/C cooler cost only my time.

My husband just made one out of a large storage tote and a 24" box fan. Sucker takes about 4 gallons of frozen milk jugs, but it cools the entire living room and kitchen combined!! Thanks for the great idea! P.S. Because the tote is not insulated like the cooler is, we lined it with cardboard. That takes care of the insulation problem and still have plenty of room for the ice jugs.

Crock pot with the handles cut off and spray foam in between the bucket andthe pot, possibly use smaller diameter pipes with a 90 degree bend and a siphon to reach the bottom of the container, a small rack for the jug of ice to sit on above the pipe inlets...this would force the air down and around the jug and up the pipes thus giving you even colder air, you could compensate more outlets due to the smaller diameter. This would also increase it's overall area of coverage as well... Just a thought.

Combine that with the interesting thumbnail, and many people are going to click it. Clicks for vets? That seems rather condescending. Other people can get clicks for things. Veterans will just have to sit out the whole “air conditioner bucket” section I guess.

I actually built 2 of these and my landlord was blown away when she came to do the annual apartment inspection and found it COLD in my living room. She glanced at the windows and asked me where the air conditioner was and I pointed to my bucket. She said no way and stood in front of it. I showed her what I did and told her about your channel. She shook her head in amazement. I took out my in-window ac to clean it and was SO grossed out from all the bugs and detritus I found inside the casement that I refused to ever use one like that again and gave it away. Unfortunately, the new apartment I moved into is constructed vastly differently and my apartment is situated where I get extreme heat from two walls and my lil bucket ac could not break it so I had no choice but to get another ac unit, this time a portable that uses a vent hose and has a dehumidifier and fan option. For my tiny bathroom, however, my bucket ac works perfectly.

Just created mine, but I wanted to add a comment that might help someone when they go to Home Depot. I asked for a 1.5" internal diameter PVC pipe and the employee gave me a $5 pipe that was about 3 feet long. It had 1.5" printed on it. When I cut the holes in the bucket and liner, then cut the PVC pipe to the length I wanted, I tried fitting each pipe into the holes but the pipes were too small--had small gaps around it and loosely went up and down. I went back to HD and carried my remaining PVC pipe with me plus the circular part of the bucket I had cut out. I verified that there was no size between 1.5" and 2", and 2" appeared to be way too big. This time I went to the area where they have all the PVC pipe elbows, T connectors, etc in individual cardboard boxes and found the straight 1.5" PVC pipe. I noticed that my incorrect PVC pipe fit snugly inside this one, thus possibly filling in those aforementioned gaps. So I picked up three and brought them home. It took some shoving but I got each inside all holes and now they fit snugly. So when you go to HD to get these pipes, make sure you go to the section with the 1.5" pieces inside cardboard containers and not the longer pieces. If someone had a better experience with the longer pieces and cut them to size, feel free to share your expertise.

Knucklehead, not possible adding salt will make it colder unless the salt is colder than the ice. In fact, since the salt will be warmer than the ice when added, it will make it hotter until the salt is brought down to the temperature of the ice. @@tinaleanne556 well if you use salt water to make your own ice it will make it colder
@roshanguthey6346
@roshanguthey6346 5 жыл бұрын
Tina Leanne not true. Adding salt will actually increase the breakdown of the ice thus ice will melt faster. This is the same reason salt is sprayed on the roads while snowing. When a big clunk of ice is breaking down, two things happen. First, ice will melt faster which actually just means it has to come to an equilibrium to its surrounding temperature. The coldness (the absence of heat) will decrease by bringing the outside heat. During this process, cold air (via forced convection of the fan) will be exposed through the holes of the bucket. In turn, cold air for the individual. Second, while breaking down of the ice by the salt, pockets of holes will be created in the block of ice. These pockets will expose more surface area for the air to travel through which also helps releasing cold air from the holes of the bucket. The faster that ice melts, the cooler that air from bucket holes will be. Another way you can have cool air is just by breaking that ice down. Having smaller pieces of ice will also give you cooler air as well. Similarly, slower that ice melts, the air temperature from the bucket holes will be similar to outside air temp. The principal is that ice will melt inevitably; how do you want to do it? Faster melting means cooler air. Slower melting means less cooled air for longer period of time. And that is the actual thermodynamics principle. Stop belittling others!

When you consider that an average portable A/C unit costs $200 to over $600, a little ingenuity can really ease the pain on your wallet in this consumer-crazy economy. Anyone who can use tools can build one of these. Yours is a plastic bucket, mine is a metal box, but the concept is the same; turn hot & humid air into cool & dry air. The one thing my design is missing is more insulation. You have the right idea using Styrofoam, as it will definitely extend the "life" of the ice. Your design is great because it's simple and inexpensive to build, mine is a bit more involved (mainly because I originally designed it as a dehumidifier). However, because of its ability to retain its temperature, I prefer metal construction. Also for mine, I plan to solder a potentiometer into the fan's circuitry for variable speeds, with its knob on the outside for convenient operation and for a more professional look. 'Proof that great minds think alike! I suppose it's time to make a video of my own. Thanks for sharing and keep engineering and inventing; it's a lost art these days!

This way I could cool an entire room in all directions and not just one direction. It worked very well! I used it camping a few times and kept the tent very cool at night. I also used it for my Grandmas 90th birthday which was during the summer at the farm. She was able to enjoy the outside and stay comfortable up to 6 feet away. I later improved it by putting a copper coil hooked to a water pump that pump pre cooled water through it and then onto the ice in the cooler. Talking about cooling power! In anycase. Here's another idea if you have the ability: Dig a trench outside your home down to about 8-10ft (one end next to home, the other away from the home). Lay some pipe or wide hose (at least 3-4in diameter) in the trench. On the end of the trench farthest away from the house, have the pipe come up out of the ground and have a cap on it so water doesn't get in and maybe a screen to keep bugs out. Where the trench meets the house, run the pipe/hose to the ground surface and into the home (or find some way to get it into the home). Might want to insulate any part of the pipe coming near the surface of the dirt or out of the dirt. Fill in the trench. Put a fan facing inward on the house side of the pipe and it should bring in cooler air. The deeper and longer the trench (to a degree) the cooler the air should end up being. No ice needed, just a fan.

That is called an "earth tube" - a passive cooling device used in sustainable Architecture. If you have a hillside behind your home, you can build the intake uphill (they look like an upside down J coming out of the ground when finished) and let the earth tube run down slope into the house, terminating at a water feature with a decorative spray fountain. The inlet is screened to prevent insects and such from entering, but allows for free air flow. The air in the tube cools, becomes more dense, and falls down slope which makes suction and draws in air from outside, cooling as it goes, eventually to reach to house and water feature, where it picks up a little moisture (aids in sensible cooling) and cools the interior. The process works best if there is a hot air "chimney" in the house where the heat collects and exits the house. Irrigating the soil over and around the earth tube increases the cooling. FYI, I'm an Architect.

Technically this is not an air conditioner. Evaporation can really do wonders for the temperature but it's actually going to increase the humidity in the room. If you're in the dry south or southwest that's great, but up here in the northeast we get humid summers. But if it works for you, great -- ! About the energy requirements though -- super that you can run the fan at less than 15 watts, but you have to account for the energy used by the freezer that made the ice. Not exactly "green" once that's included.

Not a swamp cooler. Swamp coolers EVAPORATE water. This uses the OTHER phase change of melting ice. In fact in some ways this is a reverse swamp cooler. As hot muggy air is blown across the ice, a lot of the moisture condenses out (at the expense of some cooling). In fact this condenses a lot more than it evaporates. You may be misunderstanding what you are seeing. Those aren't fountains of water. Those streamers are tinsel used to show the airflow. I agree about the energy requirements though, overall it adds heat to the house, but this is a spot cooler. It cools the place where you are sitting allowing you to keep the rest of the house a little warmer. If you check desetsun's other videos, he actually uses an outdoor solar icemaker, so in his case, it is very green.

JeffTheHokie 2 questions: ① Will this _only_ cool the particular spot that the air is flowing out from? I mean if the air blowing out _is_ cooler than that going in, surely that means the air in the surrounding areas will cool down also? Or have I got it backwards? Instead the "cool air" will become warmer as it levels out with the ambient temperature? ② You wrote → ❝ overall it adds heat to the house ••• It cools the place where you are sitting allowing you to keep the rest of the house a little warmer.❞ How can it _warm_ the rest of the house? As in "adding heat"? Do you mean because of the energy used to power the fan & cool the ice?

The fridge did the work to make the ice. Its still a good project. There's no-net gain in cool air, since the fridge displaced the warmth from inside of it to the house, in order to make the ice (re-cooling the air that was made warmer by the refrigerator). It can still serve a purpose to cool a small area, or to be portable. A chemical reaction to make cold or a heat exchanger to outside is an authentic air conditioner.

When it's 30C/90F inside, 42C/105F outside (like here in Melbourne AU today) and a fan just blows stupid hot air at you, I don't think it would really matter that much if there's no overall net gain of cool air in the house as long as your precious micro-climate around your bed is cool, especially if the fridge is on the other side of the house :)

If the ice maker was outside this would be more practical. But you still have the high electricity cost of making the ice. Michael Vander Uhh, yeah it will. Putting 1 gallon of room temperature water into a fridge freezer will take a lot of energy to cool and then freeze. 1 gallon water = 3.78 kg, cooling 3.78 kg from 68 F to 32 F requires 316 joules, which isn't much. HOWEVER, phase changes require energy than just cooling. To freeze 3.78 kg of water will require removing 126,000 J of energy at 100% efficiency and fridges are NOT 100% efficient. Also, fridges do not run 24/7. Fridges are like water heaters, they turn on when they need to. Meaning that warming the freezer will keep your fridge running A LOT more than it should. This "set-up" would most likely not save you any money, especially with a solar panel. Those are extremely expensive and their return-on-investment takes years. Source: Engineer

Randy Parsons Correct about the ac unit, with the coil outside to be efficient. An ice-maker has to work extra hard when its hotter outside, than it is inside, but it does give a net gain in cooling. Also, the ice-maker cooling costs are to the store's bulk cooling, then there is transfer cost to the customer. Buying ice from a store is inefficient but probably cheaper, depending on how long you would leave ice in your own fridge (I have no idea how quickly this cost would catch up to store bought ice).

As you know this is awesome. I am just curious. Where did you find such a perfect styrofoam liner? Thanks in advance!

Already had seen similar ideas but never thought of adapting a solar panel to it too.

People complaining that freezing ice takes energy. Yes it does, but did you know the more full your fridge/freezer is the less work it has to do to cool.

This is a joke comment, right? Because obviously putting twice as much stuff into my freezer takes half as much energy to freeze it. The air in a freezer is basically nothing.

Great idea. I'd probably go through a lot of ice jugs here in the Phoenix area, but I pretty much always have the sun to power the thing.

I was thinking instead of using a block of ice, you use just normal ice cubes. That way you can put your beer in there, so that while your enjoying your little air conditioner (say, on your porch with some friends) you can reach in and a have a refreshing beer in front of your cool AC. Aaaaah, I can picture it now....

My Freezer is in the Garage and you can freeze the Jugs at Night when the Power demand is less. So the Heat is outside my living Area. Actually in the Desert the Nights are still cold and the Heat from the Freezer would be welcome late night. Nice way where I am to transfer energy around.
