We had the opportunity to make a very short visit to Homer early in the spring, and wanted to share what travelers in the summer might expect of this eclectic city. We show a couple well known campgrounds and list a lot of other options, talk about The Spit, and highlight the many great eating options Homer has to offer, both in season and off-season. We also explain very simply how The Spit was formed.

As a person who lived in homer all their life, gotta hand it to you guys this is really accurate. A lot of your bets try to glorify homer to something it’s not. Also Save U More is another major store in homer along with Carrs. Best ice cream in town and some good reasonably priced pizza as well!👌🏻

Just got back from Homer. Two Sisters Bakery is a must, as is Fat Olive's Restaurant. However, I am convinced Homer must not have any zoning, building codes or trash pick up.

Just curious what you mean about the trash pick up. ??

Oh, and Fat Olives IS a must, they are just pretty well known, so I tried to highlight some other places that might not be as well known. Fat Olives is also RIGHT there to be found as soon as you come into town.

There are a lot of yards and businesses where it looks like they don't throw away or have picked up trash (wood, plumbing fixtures, refrigerators, old lawn furniture, you name it.)@@semiseriouschefs4629

We are planning to do this trip from Seattle to Homer in May of 2021 renting a truck/camper from UpNorth rentals. They look reasonably priced. Unless we find another outfit to use.

I will be vacationing there with a rented RV. Is doing an Uber or a cab an option to get to the Homer spit from Ocean Shores RV park?

I loved this video and your family is sooo sweet!!! Very professional too! I have a question/observation. I hope you don't interpret it the wrong way though!!! I live in Pennsylvania. The home of Amish people! Haha. Even people who don't view themselves as "ethnic" here still have German, Polish, Italian, Jewish, and Slovak last names and our food reflects that. Everything we eat is judged against how our grandmothers made it. So food is history and tradition. As much as I love Alaska and I soooo want to move there- am I wrong in observing that this familial idea of food is not there? I really want to go to all those places to eat that you showed- but in a way they remind me of Las Vegas. There was nothing there and they imported things and "Wala! A city!". They seemed dropped from the sky- and make food from "other places". Where I am, I will drive past bars and lodges and restaurants that have been there for 100 years that old people eat at and will think about my grandfather eating pierogis and sausages there 100 years ago and it makes me smile. I'm still going to move to Alaska some day (!!!!) but I would feel better if they had something called "Traditional Alaskan food" that people's grandmothers have made there for 100 years. (I don't want to say anything bad about Alaska so if you think this comment is offensive you can delete it!!!).

Oh! I wish I could call you on the phone to yell you all about the intricacies. Alaska as we know it is very very young. All of these little places are usually survivers of old mining camps, or if they are lucky, Russian Settlements (but not the Old Believers mentioned here, they are from the late 20th century). As for true historic Alaskan Cultured they are alive and well, but you have to seek them out in the populated places, OR pay a lot to reach the more traditional Native Villages by plane. As for Alaskan, there is a lot of modern Fish and Game culture, but it's not so prevalent in public places, and Most people in Alaska don't eat any different than in Washington state or Minnesota, etc. HOWEVER there are MANY proud pockets of ALL KINDS of heritage in Anchorage and Alaska, if you work to seek them out. Anchorage is HUGELY diverse, and each little town has it's own groups of immigrants with their own cultural influence and contribution to the community. ....but only the truly culture savy and intruiged will ever see or understand any of these. ...unfortunately.

I would think so. Most Alaskans are very friendly, just be aware that drinking and partying are really prevalent in general, but very specifically to beach camping in Alaska. Can be a bit rowdy/noisy, but that shouldn't make it unsafe.
