We had a terrible fall this year with covid and numerous vacations. So, we started over in February and from now on will be taking off in the fall and starting our new year in January. That way we get to enjoy the holidays.

I can’t believe she will be in 3rd grade next year! Also, really like First Language Lessons. I like the simplicity and how it allows us to use it in a variety of ways.

I’m doing the free trial of teaching textbooks now and I absolutely love it. It’s very simple easy to download and easy to use. I downloaded it on my phone, my kids tablet and our laptop. It even lets you try any grade for free if you need to see where your child needs to be or want to challenge them more. I didn’t find out about teaching textbooks until after I purchased learn math fast so I’m going to use them in combination with each other because I really like learn math fast textbooks too! Anyway thanks for sharing! ❤️

Great picks! I also have an upcoming third grader and we are also doing FLL3. We love HWOT cursive - it worked so well for my son who has developmental delays. I would love to be your science co-op class! We are finishing up Apologia swimming creatures this year and will do Flying Creatures next year - such a great curriculum! I will look into the Spanish Academy - that sounds interesting! We have done Latin the last two years, but I’d like to transition to Spanish at some point.

Big cursive advocate here too! It also helps them be able to read things in cursive. We receive letters from grandparents written in cursive and I want her to be able to read them. 🥰 I’ve been thinking about Simply Piano too. Something we can do from home and not have to have another thing to go to every week. We already do dance. 😊 I have a worksheet lover to! 📝✏️

I use Logic of English Foundations and Explode the Code. I really like the fact that Explode the Code is so independent because I want to train the habit of independent work as early as possible for my kids. I also have a couple late birthdays (November and December) and an early one (February) so I just start grade one right after they turn six. Then the expectations are more likely to be developmentally appropriate. That means my late birthdays are technically young and "behind" for the registered grade. But if I had sent them to public school, I would have waited the extra year to put them in to make sure they had the cognitive/developmental advantage (In Alberta, if you turn 6 between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you can start in either year).

Hello :) my son will be in 3rd grade as well . Love your curriculum choices - we have made the jump to IEW for both boys this year - they struggle with writing and I’m hoping this will be the magical solution to avoid tears . We are starting our 3rd year of homeschooling :) how do you structure your day to get through all the subjects every day ? We switched from public school and the first year was hard on them - adjusting to my expectations and doing the work - we still struggle with efficient work . Any suggestions :P? My youngest son loves Simply Piano :D he has done great with it :) Do you know if there’s an online program like Spanish Academy but for French ? Thanks :) Been following you for a while now ;) I’m a core curriculum mama as well with a splatter of electives . Love challenging the kids !

Thank you so much for sharing. IEW is so great, it will really take some pressure off of you. If you do Structure & Style, Andrew is amazing, and he is so funny. I would say take your time and not worry about everything being perfect. Sometimes just encouraging and congratulating them, even if it's not their best, keeps them going and avoids discourage. The hardest part about homeschooling when you've been around public school, is getting unbrainwashed. So getting away from their expectation and focusing more connecting, building their faith, relationships, caring... those are the most important. Then the academics fall into place because they are doing those things in caring manner. Hope that helps and thank you so much for sharing!

I like it as an extra bonus curriculum. We’ve done government and it inspired my kids to dig deeper. We also did inventions. We did have to expand and add experiments to it to make it really fun. So it’s good as a base. I did not like their Easter curriculum, mainly because the Passover portion was not at all how we do Passover as messianic Jews.

When you refer to “spines”… what do you mean?

So maybe "spines" was not the best word choice. So basically, what I meant, some people like to have a book that carries them through the entire year. Kind of like a curriculum or textbook would. So with Truthquest, they will give you option of books that you can use all year. These books are not specialized, but more general.

I have a question about teaching textbooks. My daughter will be entering 3rd grade. I have been checking out teaching textbooks. I thought it seemed to easy for my daughter..... Is teaching textbooks behind the other criculumms??

I don't know if "behind" would be the right word to use. It's much gentler and works really well at laying foundation. However, if you have a child that loves math, that love challenges, and puzzles they will breeze through it and may need something else. Teaching Textbooks does not offer the extra challenging puzzles that other curriculums offer. However, with that being said, I have seen scores on Nationally Normed Test above grade levels from kids using Teaching Textbooks. Because it's so good at teaching foundations, it can help all levels of students succeed at math at their grade level.

I have also heard that Teaching textbooks is a grade level below what students "should" be doing at any certain levels.

My daughter is in 2nd grade now she will also be a very young 3rd grader. She will be 8 in November. I feel she doesn't have the strongest foundation in spelling. Is All about spelling extremely teacher intensive? Would starting in level two be appropriate? I was told they review in the beginning

Start on level 1, it gives a strong foundation. Yes, it is very teacher / parent intensive.
