Hi Laura & Dan! As I do every week, when I see your video is available my heart is filled with joy. "Dancing Dan The Mortar Man" was the best. I really like how the cement slab and walls turned out. You both do such a great job and work so hard. I love it and it strengthens me. If I should ever attempt an adventure like yours I will turn to you as my teachers. When you were both swimming it looked so refreshing. I have always loved the water. I love, love it when you end your videos with the special talk you have with us. You speak powerful truths. I am so happy to finally be a Patreon to help ya both! Woot! A prayer: "Father, please bless the work of their hands and the love in their hearts. Please give them the land so they may make a great harvest in your name. In every action and in every word, that is pleasing to You, bless the ones you love: Laura and Dan. Love in Christ, God bless you! ~John 1 John 4:16 NKJV "And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him." I stumbled across this song that reminded me of you two. A song of hope and perseverance. Search on KZfaq: a-ha You Have What It Takes.

The surfaces that come in contact with the mortar need to be wet, else the mortar doesn't stick. The bricks suck the water from the mortar to quickly. You learn only if you try. Great job guys!

I remember being your age, many, many moons ago. Striking out on my own, facing new and exciting adventures, some were bad but I survived. Finding ways to support myself which wasn't always easy. My mother, raised me to be independent and self sufficient. (My dad was gone alot working out of town.) The most important gift, besides life itself, was to believe in myself, to trust my gut instinct, be aware, be cautious, listen well and learn from others. I'm very independent, self taught even at my ripe old age! I've always been proud to be my mothers daughter. She raised me well. As a team you will survive, prosperity will smile upon you. You have the vision and drive to succeed. Life is hard sometimes but your building a life on your property. Someday you will look back and marvel at what you've accomplished! One day at a time! 🎉Cheers and crack on!

The both of you are a great credit to yourselves and each other, there are many people who look at you both with great pride as humans and “Gordies” as a Scot I have no problems with the dialect! Your summing up at the end should be noted by all and the both of you as it was so true and honest about the situation you are in and the place you want to be, well said! Areet, mate! If yer fancy cuttin' down on that mowin' after yee've been away, especially in Portugal, here's a canny trick for yee: Spot that patch of land that's chocka with weeds, the one yee want to sort out without diggin'. Grab yerself a big ol' sheet of builders plastic and chuck it owa the lot. Now, yee don't want that plastic flyin' off, so use some tent pegs to pin it down proper tight. Leave it be for a good three months or so. That sun won't get through, and it'll knack the weeds underneath. Once them weeds have given up the ghost, pull off the plastic. Slap on a hefty layer of compost where the weeds used to be. Now, get yee plants in there, straight into that compost. Keep an eye out for cheeky weeds tryin' to come back. If yee spot any, just cover 'em with a bit of plastic. Patience is the name of the game here. Make sure them weeds get nowt of that sunshine for a good while, and yee'll be golden! There yee have it, pet. Give it a whirl, and yee'll have less mowin' to worry about when yee get back from yer jollies! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5yDh9dj0c2ydp8.html

Cement mixing guy here again from the last video. Just wanted to let you know you are doing great. I've been exactly where you are on a new homestead doing everything for the first time. I just want to offer tips, not meaning to be negative or anything, but sometimes it's good to know better ways to do things to make some of the jobs easier since there's a lot on your plate. I wouldn't look at any criticism as a "Mistake", but consider it a friend giving advice. If I were there in person I'd offer tips the same way and would save you time and money and grief. Also it may be good before you do a project video, on the previous video give us a hint on what you are attempting to do and people can give pro tips in the comments. That being said. For this video and as someone who's had lots of experience by now. Your brick laying wasn't too bad. The Mortar Mix consistency looked spot on. Only tip I could provide is to use poles on the corners next time and make string lines. Makes lining and leveling much easier and consistent. It's a little more prep work involved at first, but makes the rest of the job much easier and faster. Overall, turned out well! BTW on the cement tips regarding the Pea rock, I wanted to clarify, use the smaller stone, like small marble size or smaller, and spread it out within the forms to where the dirt below it is barely visible, just a thin layer of rock with no high spots, spread it evenly within the form. Don't get the larger Pea stone, (I've learned there are different sizes pea gravel in different places of the world)
@theoriginhomestead
@theoriginhomestead 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing the good tips will have to look up the pole idea as this would of defo helped for sure :) Thanks for clarification on the pea stone and yes that is a common problem out hear in central portugal its not easy to get certain building supplies like everywhere else in the world and they have a lot diff stuff :)

I think that you need to do one video a year in full Geordie, just to celebrate the culture and as a relief from having to tone it down for us all the rest of the time. Deadpan it - no explanation. It's a great accent. As a southern Englishman, who isn't good with accents, I have no difficulty understanding your slowed down version, thank you!. I completely agree with just giving things a go. I'm a perfectionist and the number of times I haven't even started something, because I know I can't do it properly 😢 There's a ancient quotation - Perfect is the enemy of good. Congratulations on getting sponsored!

We love watching your videos. I grab my snacks when I see a notification and settle in. Just wanted to say that there's many people who dream of doing what you guys are doing right now. Be proud of all the hard work you have done and will continue to do❤and I understand 99%of what you guys say. The other 1% is just saying you do in your language. No problem. Now let me ask some questions. Are there any carnivores where you are like 😊bears, wolves, or cougars? Seeing as how the house that you're renovating is older, do you have any,.... Weird things or sounds happening? Do you get freaked at night sometimes?

Thank You for the Video...I have had to learn things or pay to have them done after my husband died. It is not easy. Some things I have to watch a you tube to see it done. It is non-stop. You two make a great team.& work very hard but you have no choice. My jobs are easy....You are making a lovely place to enjoy when all is done, if there is ever a 'all is done'. I just have 4 acres to tend to & mow...I would like it to be mostly flowers & maybe some vegetables (with the deer, raccoons, squirrels & wood chucks, I have to out smart them). Enjoy you time off from working.

I think you're doing a great job & mistakes have been minor. All diy projects i do end up taking 3 times as long, taking many trips to the shops, & costing more than planned 😂. It's hard not to get grumpy. Ignore any trolls that may be overly critical. They are likely unhappy & it can spread to others. By yhe way, I have no problems understanding you & enjoy hearing different accents. I live in the "silicon valley" of the US & meet people from many places. I enjoy watching you both & live vicariously since i am not so young. I look forward to your videos.

Its a lot easier mixing mortar or concrete with a garden hoe than a shovel when doing it by hand. Some tradesman drill a 60 to 70mm hole in the blade of the hoe to help it pull through the mix better. Hope that helps
