Professional sheep shearer Molly Wilbur of Amiable Acres visits and shears a few of our sheep. Most of our sheep are hair sheep and shed their wool (no shearing required) but I do have a few that are crossed with East Friesian sheep and have wool that won't shed.

Now that's how you take a sheep to the baabaa shop. Jokes aside, it's impressive how you aren't so rough on the sheep, and the coats after shearing look so nice and fine like a freshly cleaned carpet.

About a decade ago, I was at a certain central Ohio university, in a class, talking about wool, with sheep all around. Invited, I walked into the pen in front of me and in a moment already had one of the biggest laying back against my legs. 7 minutes later, the fleece in one piece, the director of the farm who had brought the sheep asked how the hell I had done it on that particular sheep...... as I continued to sing and had another sheep ready to go..... Yes, sing..... I always sang to my goats and they never failed to let down their milk...... This is what is lost in today’s world....

Glad Molly addressed how not to pull the skin or wool up so the sheep aren’t cut by the shear. Once I watched a sheep shearing contest in which one of the shearers cut a sheep on the neck. Not surprisingly the sheep started to get a little panicky after that. Fortunately the cut wasn’t deep. Anyhow, nice work by Molly and interesting to see the ewes’ look post-shearing.

That['s gotta feel SO much better. And it would be fun to collect the fleeces for a few years from each of them, and then have them skirted and spun! The colors are lovely and would make such nice natural colored yarns for weaving, knitting or crocheting!

The steel she’s talking about is called a gut and short gut, and they cut the wool a hell of a lot better then an electric hand piece. It’s gotta be going at least 3300 to cut the wool or it tears it and ruins the comb and cutter real quick as hell as not feeling good for the sheep.

Dan, do your Khatadin ewes provide you with any milk at all? If so, can you tell the difference in taste or quality from the Friesian mixes? I have always figured (planned) on just having hair sheep (American Blackbellies) and getting what milk I could from them as I am the only milk drinker in my house. However, if hair sheep milk is not so good....I need to develop plan B.

Would LOVE to know what brand of shears Molly recommends! We decided to do our one sheep (Friesian/Dorset cross) ourselves this year, bought a decent looking pair off Amazon and they were a total nightmare! They wouldn't even make it through the top layer, let alone getting a nice, close shear like she's getting here. No amount of oiling or adjusting the tension made a difference. And my arm is still shaking trying to type this from the vibration after 15 min of use. Halp!! (Pretty please!)
