@@kaydenl6836 lol really? Comparing taxes under a conservative with a lib? And it’s not just taxes. Look at what liberalism built in ca. Can’t blame the right for the homeless. Right hasn’t been in power for a long time. Can’t blame the right for fuel prices, power outages, fires, the inability to protect yourself, crime, shit in the streets. But in reality it’s the western part of the state. Really a wall needs to be built from Mexico and up the coast of ca all the way to Canada. The eastern part of those states still respect freedom.

I have been doing an informal version of that process adapted to our needs. One factor that we included along with the political climate was availability of churches that fit our profile. I am thinking that an extended "vacation" stay in prospective areas might be a good move too.

I've been doing something similar. I also included the pedo laws and when searching for a property I always check that website to see if there are any that live near there. You can check within a few mile radius which is nice, it helps with peace of mind for me bc I don't want them around. I also check on the availability of the programs I'm trying to take after getting my Associates. And the pay range for what my job will be for each state. (I'll have to work but my husband won't) For medical reasons we have to live close to a major city. I honestly want a place with snow, but if there's an emergency and someone needs to be put in the hospital helicopter again lots of snow is a bad idea. Schools. We can't homeschool, I'd love to but it's not really possible for us. So I've been having to look into private schools and whether they're too political in those areas. (You have to do a thorough dive into their websites and look for certain words like "globalism") We use a lot of ingredients that you can't get in normal grocery stores. Yes we will be trying to grow as much of it that we can but some of it is also sauces and cheeses that we don't currently know how to make. And we wont have a dairy cow and goat for the first couple years. So I have to also look into if theres any large Asian and Mexican grocery stores in the city nearby. Going through all of their Google pics to see if they have what we need. That one is really hard to find. It's a huge list (there's a lot more) and my husband just says he doesn't care where we go as long as the food is good.😂

Well Aust, this is a great topic. We just made our move from Michigan down to Kentucky. We spent years on vacationing in many states. We did the same thing you guys did we set a 8 hour drive time from parents and grandchildren. Then I sent out resume to places and did my job interviews all in fours days. Melissa would just would get a transfer to a major city. Which was way easier to transfer. So let our jobs help us to land our area. Then we decided to rent then figure out land issues.

Lived in Kentucky my whole life from far west to Bourbon country and have so many friends from the Appalachian areas. I will say we have a good mix of benefits with a definite identity and culture. Out East does have some social plagues but the Applachian spirit, self-sufficiency, and wisdom that still exists there is amazing. I'm from far out west with big lakes and flatter land making farming easier and the social plagues, though present, are significantly less. The self-sufficiency culture has been diluted some but is usually only a generation removed.

Currently reside in central GA, and was looking for land to start our homestead, but have come to find that not only is land expensive, but different counties have different regulations. Ex: My current county requires that you cannot have any livestock, even birds like chicken or quail, unless you own at least 5 acres of land.

So I live in the coastal North Carolina area. Specifically around the Wilmington area. I would love to hear your opinion how to homestead in areas with hot humid summers , and what kind of livestock does best . From what I can tell for example: sheep would be terrible due to the climate not being dry enough due to them being susceptible to disease . How do you deal with insects destroying your crops which I have found when trying my garden.

I moved from Connecticut to Massachusetts. I found inexpensive land in the Hilltown area of western Massachusetts in 1997 or 98. The western side is so much better than the central and eastern part of that state - people are independent-minded and I had a lot of friends already living along the Connecticut River valley, especially up north. I recently retired, and moved to a home I built here in MA. I got a great deal back then on a geographically-perfect place to live the homesteading life No children, and actually taxes are better here (not by a lot) than CT, but the cost of living is definitely better here, especially in this region of the state. (Cheaper gas, vet bills, car bills...) Ideally, I'd consider VT or VA or NC or perhaps Maine - but not until now did I know enough folk in VT to make that plunge. My brother's family is moving to Florida - between the price of land for farming, and a full seven months of heat and humidity, I said NO. My parents are deceased so their location is not a concern. Having a farm business here is possible. I understand more paperwork in VT, so this is better here. I can sell my eggs just by hanging out the figurative shingle. Moving was a bit hard but not so bad. I drove everything up to my MA home myself - well, I couldn't do it all at once as the house was being built, and sorting before I left was good. A lot of stuff came up in multiple trips in my car (4 hours round trip), some before I retired. I rented a Budget van for one go, and two separate U-Haul trucks for the last. Staying and farming at my old home was not an option. No space, and although I'd be allowed chickens there, this would have meant I'd have no other land use space left. Besides, roosters were not permitted. I'm loving every moment of my homestead life here, and am going to be expanding what I do here. Yes, when I get sheep and goats, I will need to get a gun, but it is indeed possible in this state. (If for nothing else, if an animal is severely injured from a predator or some other misfortune, one needs to be able to dispatch quickly and efficiently) Right now it is just chickens, with quail in my future this year. Oh. I'm going to maple syrup this lot very soon!

Ive got friends in all 50 states and for property taxes, income taxs retirement benefits I would say are the best in the western states. You have chances to get bigger plots of land and less building codes compared to the east and western cost. Most of the western states are more conservative which means they more or less stay out of your business. The biggest problem is making sure when you buy is make sure you have water rights.

I've lived in PA all my life. Homeschooling here is very restrictive. If you're used to no laws or some, you will not like homeschooling in PA. It's not impossible but the redundant paperwork is ridiculous especially if you have more than one child. Evaluations, portfolios , testing in grades 3,5 and 8. I would say it's okay for homesteading, BUT property taxes are getting high, gas is getting expensive, we have the highest tax in the nation on gas. Land is just getting expensive here. You can buy raw milk in PA. You can't sell eggs (though you can get away with it by saying to the person you'll accept payment for feed, but you can't sell them at a farmer's market. ) The permits to do it is outrageously expensive that no homestead could afford to sell eggs at a farmer's market. In all it's really beginning to be more like the New England states. We do have decent gun laws here as many do hunt but we have forces that want to ban guns so... Also if you're looking to live in a conservative state , though there are many here in PA, it's just not enough to keep it a conservative state. I'm sure I'm missing some other stuff, but if you want to know , PA's climate is cold. We maybe have 3-4 months out of the year where it's warm enough to garden. The rest of the time it's winter. So if lack of sun gets you depressed. Don't move here. We have about 8=9 months of winter. We do have a little bit of spring in between and that's March - May. Winters can be brutally cold especially if you live near Lake Erie. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask in a reply. Work opportunities_ not the place to come to, unless you live around the Harrisburg/Philly area. Everything else is becoming destitute. It's not called the Rust Belt for no reason. These are the things I can think of off the top of my head. As for me, I dream of the day I can move south somewhere.

Good topic. I don't need to worry about family as mine spread out across the country to begin with, but I do need to be concerned about Social Security Disability and Medicare and if the state has programs to help supplement the $144.60 taken out of the tiny checks each month. I can't deal with all the cold and gloom of WA state anymore and when the back $ comes in need a place with some land to homestead some just to make ends meet! I found this video very interesting. This past summer my family moved from NH to CT. Major reason we chose CT was it was closer to family in NY. We didn't want to live in NY because the taxes were so high. I was suprised to find out the property taxes were cheaper in CT and the public school systems were rated an A in the country according to Niche. The price of food and other consumables are quite expensive in CT. However we are hoping to offset that cost with making our own food as much as possible. We weren't able to get a huge amount of property but are looking into leasing land and using it to pasture some of our animals. I was suprised you gave NH such a low score in hunting. It is a very conservative state when it comes to hunting and gun laws or so I thought. It was cool seeing the reasons why you left CT and comparing them to our reasons for wanting to move there. Thanks for the info.

Hello! I’ve been following your family’s journey for the last couple of years and have gleaned a lot of awesome information from your podcast. I’m currently in the market for my first home (buying on my own!) and have plans to start a little one-woman homestead. I’m reaching out because I’m going to PASA next week and was wondering if you guys will be there. If so, I’d loooove to meet up at some point and pick your brain. I’ll be there Thursday and Friday. Let me know if you’ll be around. And if not, maaaaybe you’d be willing to gimme a little tour of your homestead (I live in Western MD). Obviously, I don’t want to be intrusive, so I completely understand if you need to say no. Hope you’re all doing well and I look forward to hearing from you! #askhomesteady

As someone from NJ, the second worse state in the country, I advise almost anywhere other than NJ. NJ has way too high taxes for crummy old homes and too many regulations. Raw milk is illegal, but they are trying to legalize marijuana soon. The government is constantly in your business. Gun laws are ridiculous, everything is expensive. It is way overpopulated. I am looking to get out of this state ASAP. But of course NJ has an exit tax. Looking for places in PA, hoping to move when I finish college in the next year or 2.

@@jimh712 they also come to your home, trespass onto your property and kill all your birds in the worst way possible. Claiming some kind of virulent new castle disease without showing any proof of what strain it is. There is actually a vaccine for some strains as well. It does not effect humans, only other birds but they are trying to protect the factory egg farms instead of the everyday American. I would never live there, in my opinion it is the worse state in the country when it comes to politics and freedom

West central GA - 25+ acres with yr round creek & stream, mineral & water rights, build what you want, keep any livestock. I've had horses, Llamas, pigs, goats, all types birds. Mostly wooded, last cut 2010. Low taxes, hospital within 15 minutes but still secluded. 3 bed historical house that needs work but is livable. $329k. Price goes up with improvements.

You think wrong I’m afraid. I went to USC in Cali and some of the smartest kids in my classes were home schooled. Besides do you really want your kids being taught that their white skin makes them evil? Put them in sports, that’s enough for them to socialize.

Homeschooling is more beneficial for children than public schools. Homeschooled kids are more intelligent, learn REAL life skills that you wouldn't get from public schools, they aren't corrupted by the agendas, indoctrination, and bad influences, no bullies, you can Homeschool as little or as much as one wants to fit the families schedule....I can go on and on. I've been through the public school system and hated it. We had neighbors who were homeschooled growing up and they were the kindest and some of the most social people we've known. Homeschool doesn't mean less diversity or more restrictions, in fact it ensures more freedom that the kids in public schools will never get.
