I remember you just bought your dump trailer (I'm commenting on a November video in early January 2021) We built a larger wood box (on a pallet) that we lift with a 3pt hitch (MUCH higher lift capacity) Maybe consider 2 of these. 1. Cut and toss into a large box rather than toss towards the Axis. Drive to the Axis and lift up with loader or 3pt hitch so you don't pick off ground. 2. Let conveyor dump into a larger wood box, use loader or 3pt hitch to lift to knee or waist height so you don't have to pick off the ground. SAVE YOUR BACK BROTHER!!!

I find myself enjoying cutting up and processing firewood. I just burn it in a charcoal grill to cook and hang out by, not for a stove or commercially. Best of all, it's free therapy, lol. I grab it from the dump-off spot where the highway dept and maintenance guys take it when doing brush pick-ups. They're quite happy to have it gone- less work for them, lol. Mostly maple and spruce in my neighborhood, but I lucked into some good Locust that makes great long lasting coals. Not heating a house, so no need to be too picky about species- just as long as it's dry and burns well. I think I've got a lifetime supply of tinder and kindling now from breaking up dead branches, lol. Why spend on lump charcoal, when you can get wood for free? (and make your own by smothering the fire, once you're done with it?)
@russbatzer69702 жыл бұрын
@pyroman6000 i do the same exact thing. Haven't bought charcoal maybe once in 15 years or more. & when i did, it was a complete disappointment after using firewood for so long 🤣

Great job. I always start with jobs that are the most tedious first, then finish with the jobs I like to do the most. That way I have something to look forward to.

Myself I can’t just do the same thing for hours. Like I couldn’t go out and just run saw for 8 hours one day and the split for 8 hours the next. I gotta keep switching it up. That’s why I like cutting a little, splitting a little and then stacking a little. It keeps it from getting too repetitive.

Keep going at it Adam! Love watching your videos even though im a city guy. I wasn't really sold on this new splitter at first, because the box wedge seemed so damn awesome, but now starting to realize this thing is so awesome for creating the small, evenly sized logs for making bundles. I will have to try a basket with a wider opening like you do. I don't cut my opening in the front as wide. I just thought leaving one more support brace up each side of my opening may give the front corner more support and have less space for wood to be lost out the front as I transport it. The wider opening would make it a little more convenient to stack. I do love how quick that easton is.
@stingray45403 жыл бұрын
I thought that too the first time I made some. I cut one both ways and the wider deeper ones work fine. The weight of the wood keeps them from falling out. I mean, don’t be too rough with the forks

Cutting those logs on the ground, there's an odds on chance you'll hit dirt with your saw trying to go right through. I find it better to cut most of the way then kick the log over. It may take a bit more time but it saves the chain some wear and tear. Boy I like your splitter.

New to the channel and have been enjoying it. Have you ever thought of using a timber Jack or something to get the logs off the ground when you are bucking them? From time to time I cut up trees that have fallen on my parents property up in Slippery Rock PA and have found it to be useful.

Two questions: what do you with the plastic containers out of the IBC totes, how do get rid of them? And have you ever stacked IBC totes full of Firewood? Thanks for the videos and analysis!
@corydriver76343 жыл бұрын
I would think you could stack them as long as the wood isn’t sticking out of the top. I’ve seen them stacked two high when they’re full of liquid. Water is much heavier than wood so wood shouldn’t be a problem. I wonder if a recycling center would take the plastic containers after all they’re the same as a plastic bottle aren’t they?

Why not just feed straight to the tote? Just walk over every few splits and tidy up the stack. This, from a guy with a bad back!

Just take the wood straight off the bench and put it in the tote, don't worry about sending it along the conveyor.

How are you liking the Axis vertical splitter compared to your old 12-22 Eastonmade horizontal splitter?
@HometownAcres3 жыл бұрын
I love it. Haven’t regretted the decision one bit
@bake2573 жыл бұрын
How much do those loaded totes weigh? Im not sure my Case IH Farmall 35C can lift one fully loaded. Also you have to work on wrapping your left thump around that chainsaw grip. Try to touch your index finger and thumb together so the web of your hand takes the full force of a kickback instead of slipping off. Keep making awesome videos. This is turning into my Sunday morning routine.

You’re always trying to optimize your time...it’s time for a sawall with metal blades...it beats trying to grind the baskets down. What are you doing with the plastic bladders once you take them out?
@stingray45403 жыл бұрын
So I noticed you put the bundle grade directly in a tote. Do you then bundle from that tote into another tote? Seems you would save a step if you bundle from the splitter into the tot to begin with?
@HometownAcres3 жыл бұрын
I agree except I want to wood to dry out before I bundle it
@stingray45403 жыл бұрын
@@HometownAcres I see. Is the issue that you don’t think they will dry well in bundles or that the bundles will become loose if the wood shrinks?
@HometownAcres3 жыл бұрын

@stingray45403 жыл бұрын
@@HometownAcres thanks. I currently cut and split just for our RV park(we load in milk crates, don’t actually bundle), but I’m thinking that selling bundled wood outside of the park might be a possible little business for my girls when they get older. So I’m trying to get things figured out. The IBC totes have already been a huge help saving 2 very time consuming steps.

Why don't you not stack them into a crate from the splitter ? you handle every thing too many times.
@nickmcdonald99353 жыл бұрын
couldn't you use the plastic tubs the same way you use the metal bins. strap them to a pallet. instead of restacking the wood put the conveyor over empty bins.
@HometownAcres3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think the plastic bins would dry the wood very well no air flow
