Mechanics eye view how to replace the passenger(right side) axle/CV joint on a Honda Accord. Same procedure for pretty much any front wheel drive Honda for a wide range of years from probably 1994 to present.
Torque axle spindle nut to 181 lb-ft.
Buy 1998-2002 Honda Accord right side CV Axle here, probably cheaper than your local auto parts store:
amzn.to/1x1gGY6
If car clicks when turning right at low speed, inspect/replace left CV axle. If car clicks when turning left, replace right axle.
Save money and have fun by fixing your car yourself! Thanks for watching!

This is in the Seattle area, it doesn't snow much here so the cars tend to be pretty rust-free. (PS: Impact tool are really helpful when doing suspension/underbody work!) Cheers,

Really like the way you edited this video, all the right info shown and concise. Mine was clicking and I believe it broke on the highway, had to get towed. Put it in gear and it is just grinding and not moving the car. I'll be doing this job soon.

Really excellent video, I echo all the good things said by other people. A bit of a caveat; these cars are almost 20 years old and if they have aged in the Northeast, some of these bolts will not be removable with a hand wrench. I recommend hitting all of them with some rust perpetrator and letting it sit a few minutes. The cotter pins will be impossible to remove, you'll have to cut them off and hope you can remove them after you unbolt. In my case the long bolt that goes through the knuckle could not be fully removed, even with air tools because the threads will have rusted away. I got it off by unbolting it, putting a lubricant on the threads and working the nut back and forth about 4 or 5 times gently to cut new threads in the bolt. Don't force it, of you'll break the bolt. Also, you'll need a slim rod to tap it out of the hole. A small scissors jack is helpful to push the lower control arm up if you're doing the job by yourself. When you're done, take some brake cleaner and clean off the rotors. Also, the grease gets everywhere. Put down a drop cloth.

Thanks for this video. You did forget to add the part where you disconnect the bottom bolt out. I couldn't figure out why the axle wouldn't pop out as easy as it did for you. :) Also, my passenger side was wayyyy harder to do than the drivers side. I did the drivers side in the dark in 30 min after spending 4 hours doing the drivers side. The axle nut would not come off!! I went and bought an impact wrench, a low grade compressor. It didn't work. I suggest get one that can handle 250lbs. This one only did 120.. Could barley tighten the other bolts. I took it to my local mechanic and gave him $20 under the table to have him loosen the axle nut.. Thank again!! You saved me $900..

Did the swap today. The only thing I would recommend is that you put both sides of the front of the car on jack stands. Otherwise, when you try to button it all back up, you'll be fighting with the sway bar to get the ball joint and strut fork back in. Thanks for this video again!

Sweet video dude. I bought coil overs for my 2013 Accord and went to put them in, but unbeknownst to me I need to remove the axle nut to drop the wheel hub low enough to remove the stock struts completely. I've never removed one before so I didn't want to mess with it without any knowledge. After watching this all I need it an impact gun to take it off and and put it back on. Thanks dude!
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 8 жыл бұрын
+TBBucYou You can get it off with a breaker bar /cheater pipe but use at least 1/2 and maybe 3/4 inch size socket tools to avoid breaking. Get someone to press the brakes really hard while loosening and you should be able to get off without impact tools.

@outbackdiecast6730

@@chaoding2282 it will be a 36 mm nut, I'm assuming you're talking about the large ones, you're going to need a breaker bar or heavy duty impact gun. If using a breaker bar pop them free while the wheels are still on the ground . You may see that the nut is notched/grooved you will have to pop that back out in order to loosen the nut. The rest of the nuts on the suspension or fairly easy. Just make sure you get your drive axle seated back in properly. Good luck you can do it.

When you put the strut fork back on, do you torque to a specific spec? Or did you just say "good enough" with the impact? Also, is there a reason why you didn't load the suspension geometry before tightening the strut fork? I believe it's recommended you do so to avoid stressing the control arm bushings. The information was useful, but the camera action made it hard for me to see what was going on is some cases - like removing the inner end of the axle (what were you prying against?) - not to mention the movement making me dizzy just watching. In my opinion stationary cameras work better.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
***** Sorry the video isn't to your liking. I hope you find a stationary camera video that better meets your needs. The 'mechanics eye view' camera has benefits and drawbacks. It is extremely time consuming to make stationary camera videos, especially for suspension work where placing a camera tripod would interfere with the work and slow things down substantially. I try to make these succinct videos as I work on cars to help out people who might be doing similar work, and if I had to set up and move around a stationary camera, I wouldn't have the time to make them, so it's either this or no video at all.
@ModMINI

***** PS - I am just prying on the carrier bearing. You can see it a few seconds before I actually pry on the bearing. Sorry that the camera didn't capture the action. There is no viewfinder so I can't review the video footage until after the job is complete. Again, the job time would probably be at least triple if I reviewed every single shot.

Hey there. I've just bought an Accord and I'm experiencing a lot of shaking while accelerating. When I lifted the car there's no play in the wheels in any direction, and the boots of the ball joints look healthy. I raised up the whole front and spun the wheels by hand, revealing that the whole axle has some wobble - but not just on one side - both axles wobble (passenger side more than the drivers). I assume from doing some searching around that it's the inner CV axle joint that has gone bad, but is there a possible underlying issue if both inner joints on both sides have gone bad? The flex pipe before the cat also has a rip. Motor mount? Bad transmission? Or just bad luck? Thanks!

Could be combination of things. Axles should have very very little play when twisting the two halves in the direction and opposite the direction of rotation. A broken flex joint is frequently the result of bad motor mounts.

You should of said it was for a 5 lug accord. I watched for a few minutes the realized it wasn't the same as my 99 accord. I have a 4 lug

It's exactly the same for both. And you can see that it's a 5 lug accord in the opening few seconds.

@@huntersexton2130 The procedure is exactly the same. Different part numbers, but I'm sure you knew that.

hello I am replacing the axel PLUS the part that connects into the transmission is there a link that you have or can lead me to show that part as well?

+Adeum Rivera I haven't done that on this car but you probably just need to loosen a couple bolts for the carrier bearing bracket and it will slide right out or maybe need to be popped out with a pry bar.

I'm currently removing axle nut and was curious if there's a cotter pin of some sort because I do not see one but not sure if that's the reason I can't break the nut lose
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 7 жыл бұрын
I don't recall but I don't think there was one. The nut is on tight, something like 300lb-ft breaking torque...?
@mrz80
@mrz80 5 жыл бұрын
There's a notch in the end of the axle, and a flange on the nut that is supposed to be hammered down into the notch to keep it from turning loose. YOu might have to use a screwdriver or cold chisel and hammer to straighten out the deformation to get it loose. Oh, and always use a new nut; never reuse the old nut.

Please help me, my accord 2006 A/T the left front tire fell apart from the upper ball joint, now it’s really hard to move the knuckle in order to align it with the ball joint, I can feel the axle is shot inside, when i go through parking, reverse and drive it feels like the transmission is kicking and the axle moved itself forward, that’s why is really hard to align the knuckle with the upper ball joint. could be this the transmission or axle? Thank you

Sounds like you have a broken axle. Remove axle from car and check for excessive play
