Agreed! Since I posted my rant over six years ago I’ve purchased and rode an Africa Twin - a lot. Aside from it being a farkle magnet, it’s a fantastic bike for a wide range of use. Still, how does it now compare with new(er) releases? Come on Fortnine, let Ryan loose on the AT again!

I've been watching motorcycle videos for the last two years and it's become a crazy obsession that borders on embarrassing. I've seen 'em all--reviews, adventure rider series, and on and on and on. The FortNine videos are nothing short of amazing. Ryan and team have more than done their homework on every video they produce. And, I say produce because their videos are full-scale productions...amazing works of art coupled with humor, special effects, music and amazing cinematography. Thanks for your commitment to excellence and keep 'em comin'.

I agree as well. Though not the pickup I’ve enjoyed most recently, I don’t really care because the superb off-road suspension soaks up the not so great NC backroads’ potholes and tar-snake-less bumps. Would I rather ride a GSA on road? Yes. But that goes away as soon as the pavement ends.

On the Africa Twin, the 43 deg handlebar turn is a unique feature. Thanks for demonstrating the U-turn from a stop. I've seen many smaller dual sport riders do it, but seeing how easily it can be done on the AT is awesome. DCT owners have it easy, not having to worry about clutch control in these maneuvers. It would also come in handy during Motogymkhana competitions. Without skidding the rear, the minimum turning radius for the AT is 8.5 ft. Try that on a Euro ADV bike.

absolutely amazing review! I gotta hand it to you, Ryan, you're kind of like the top gear of the motorcycle world (that's high praise coming from me). if I might make one suggestion, though; I really enjoy the nature shots, but I sometimes feel like the excessive pauses somewhat kill the momentum of the video. maybe a little more background narrative happening during those scenes, and making the scenic shots a little shorter in length would add some depth to the videos. otherwise, the delivery is flawless. keep up the good work!

People give the DCT such a hard time. I have a Honda NC750x DCT and I love it. I can ride a manual but since I have arthritis and damage to my left ankle I decided to get a DCT so I could get more quality time riding without hurting after a long ride. Some people think DCT riders are lazy but some of us have physical issues that make the DCT a more logical choice. I don't care what people ride, I just want them to go out, be safe and have fun!

Excellent video, Ryan. One thing I will say is, it's not that bad on the pavement. All your criticism of the on-road and on-highway handling is true but for someone who is not an aggressive rider, the Africa Twin does fine on the pavement and highway. Not all of us want to ride at 160kph and get our bikes impounded by the police. For reasonable speeds on the highway, it does just fine. It falls short on the twisties with the front end being a little vague, but even there, one has to push it to feel those limitations. The weak front brakes, however, you can feel right away. Great review and video!
@danikanes

Ryan, your youtube presence is somewhat unique. On one hand, it's no secret that it's all sponsored and that you are directly affiliated with FortNine but on the other hand, your demeanor and production quality are always absolutely awesome. It became clear during this video that your industry support affords you the resources that few other youtubers have and it kind of puts you in a class of your own. I like seeing these bike reviews and general riding info videos especially because I know FortNine is exclusively a gear distributor so you have no reason to push any actual motorcycles and the info is always great on your more conversational "vlogs". This was a "TopGear" quality review video in my opinion and I will happily watch any more videos like this in the future. We need a TopGear kind of series for bikes and you/your crew seem to have a talent for it! Keep up the great work! I've never wanted an ADV bike so badly.

Without a doubt, Ryan, one of the absolute best, most visually stunning reviews I've ever seen. Not buying an Africa Twin, but only because I don't want an ADV bike. Other than that, if I was looking for one, I'd probably buy the F800GS Adventure, because you can't ride off the road all the time. Still, I think Honda hit at least a triple with this one. Not quite a home run, but close. If they had something like BMW's ESAII, and better brakes (add a stainless steel hose?) it might have been that great bike.

I own the 2017 manual one. I ride it mainly on road in the apennines. So, TWISTIES! I find no difficulty in keeping up with other bikes, even sports bikes. It glides over road imperfections, and that's a big advantage over more 'road' oriented bikes, considering the roads in the mountains are shit anyway. It dives? Yes. But i'm 75kgs with gear, and the suspension setting is good enough.

Great review. I find the brakes on my DCT bike to be awesome, especially coming from a KLR650. I wonder if braided lines would help the initial feel? Also on the DCT starting procedure. It becomes one fluid movement when you have ridden one for a bit. You dont even need to think about it and your fingers do the work without thought quickly.

Very well presented video. Great to see this coming out of Canada. I also enjoyed the honesty in the review. There are so many "it's the best bike ever" reviews, and we need to hear about it's shortcomings because the love affair won't last forever. I have to ask, where was that filmed. I assume somewhere in QC, but it looks like a riders dreamscape?

I kinda wonder if your experience would change much with the 2019 and 2020 models (I realize both revamped vs 16). Have you had the chance to ride these yet?

Exactly! I have ridden the previous Adventure Sports and I have the 1100 Africa now. Looks like Honda listened :) All of the issues mentioned here are fixed.

@@Explorerda I have a 21 ATAS now and they listened and hit basically all the points on his list. Handling is excellent on a twisty road now, and I rode the 2016 and felt much as he did.

WTF Ryan, bloody fantastic brilliant movie trailer! BTW, I am from Montreal, and I don't remember any salt flats near by, where did you shot that????...and let me add my own twist. I bought and own the same model V-Strom you have and been trashing it for its lack of off-road abilities. Ironically, my wife and I have been on a few group rides, only a few pocket rockets can keep up w us on the back roads of Muskoka. Before you buy a bike, know it is hard to find the perfect all rounder, and be honest about the type of riding and surface you will ride on. Again, amazing job on this video Ryan. Standing in line at Cineplex for the full release eh@!

Cool review :) Well filmed and produced! Not sure I agree that the Africa Twin is better than the KTM 1190R though, I've ridden both for quite some time, and the KTM feels way more lively on the street, and similarly dirt-bike-esque off road. For off road use I also found the KTM hydraulic clutch to be considerably lighter and easier to modulate than the Africa Twin's clutch, which I honestly disliked enough to recommend anyone thinking of an Africa Twin to go for the DCT version. Best of all worlds - the new 1290R, with quick shifter for clutchless up and down shifts, and a Rekluse for those long gnarly rides. Could well be the perfect monster enduro!

Viking84 The 1190r would have been the perfect weekday commute weekend off road explorer if it wasn't for the excessive and very annoying heat issue during warmer climate lane splitting commutes. Mine becomes pretty much useless during mid-summer. Considered trading it in on an Africa twin or f800gsa for only this reason but the f800 is in dire need of a real update (speed control, LED headlights please) and the Africa twin dct costs almost the same as the new 1290r will be where I stay. However, been burned by a KTM and learned my lesson.

I have read a lot about that heat issue - does not sound very nice! Here in Norway we are generally thankful for any heat we can get, so it was not noticeable when I tested one :) Lets hope KTM have sorted out the heat and airbox issues from the 1190R for the new 1290's - I think I will be putting down some cash for one for 2017!

Greeting from Thailand!!! I would like to know that did you adjust the pre-load to more harder setting or just use it factory setup? I would like to know that the wobbling suspension can be manage by suspension pre-load adjustment? waiting to hear from you Ryan.
@FortNine
@FortNine 7 жыл бұрын
The Karan! Yes I did fiddle with the pre-load and compression a bit... it helps on the street, but not enough to make the Africa Twin competitive with some of the more street-worthy ADV bikes. ~RyanF9

I was planning on getting it soon, but now I'm kind of not sure that it would be suitable for me because 90% percent of my riding is going to be on tarmac. Still, I'm talking about bumpy and uneven country back roads. So I still need a bike with long travel suspension to soak up all the road abnormalities. Do you think the African Twin could still work for me? If not, what other options do you recommend? Amazing review by the way.

izat alawi the AT is off-road biased so the cap will not fit, if u want Honda then go 4 NC750X..the Yamaha super tenere..VStrom 1000 or 650,Kawasaki Versus,..im Japanese bias..but also BMW GS are okay..its about personal taste,the look and the feel,check The net..follow your dream Alawi..

Hello! Sorry for the late response - been away from my computer for a while. I think you could definitely do better than the AT for your purposes. Take a look at the V-Strom 1000 for a 90/10 split. There's also the Kawasaki Versys (even more road-oriented) and the Ducati Multistrada if you're looking to burn some cash. ~RyanF9

Izat - Go with what your heart tells you. The Africa Twin is an incredibly capable bike and the margins of what make a good bike or great bike on road are very small these days. It's not like the difference between a XL650L and a CB500X for instance. I can keep up with many sports bikes on most twisties on my Africa Twin (the one in the video). You won't be disappointed in the Africa Twin, it has won bike of the year in quite a few renowned publications.
