Honda CB750 Engine Top End Strip Down | Cafe Racer Project Bike Motor | 07
In this episode I remove the cylinder head from my CB750 Cafe Racer project bike
When I first started this bike I found that it leaked oil from the front of the engine, it also seemed to be blowing from around the front of the engine. I compression tested the engine and found that the readings were quite low, and while test running the bike I could see further oil leaking from around the front of the head gasket.
British bikes from the 70’s were often criticised for how much oil they leaked, but a bit of research shows that the big Honda’s from the same period seemed to have the same level of incontinence! There are a lot of forum posts about different issues that can cause oil leaks with many different remedies, which can cause confusion.
The two other CB750’s I have owned both had oil leaks, one from the cylinder base gasket and the other from the rocker cover. Neither were bad enough to require urgent surgery, and the fact that the engine would have to be removed to address either issue meant that I never got around to solving them. However this engine leaks enough so that it can not be ignored, and the low compression is worthy of having a look.
In a previous video I showed how I removed the engine. Now I am starting to strip it, although I am hoping that I will find a very obvious issue causing the leak, but experience tells me there is a high likelihood that there will be nothing obvious. It is going to be interesting, but I hope it doesn’t turn out to be annoying.
