One of the best videos on Aluminium case polishing. Everyone has their own way but yours is the most methodical and gives the most correct look. Excellent!

I had a 1980 and 1981 CBX in storage for 20 years. 4 days ago I brought everything home and gave up my $250 a month storage unit. Its weird, after all of these years not riding any more all of a sudden CBX things are popping up on KZfaq. I clicked on this video and a flood of memories came back. I will be watching all of your videos. In 1992 my first motorcycle engine overhaul was taking my junk engine with rod sticking through the cases and another derelict engine and making a good running engine out of the pieces. The CBX engine is definitely not a beginner project.

Thank you Kimmer6, I am happy my videos are bringing back your memories. Thank you so much for your support :) I will be restoring a couple of 80s after these 79s are done.

That’s exactly how I’ve done my cases for years. It really is the only way if you want a factory like finish. I have in the past had cases polished by a polishing company (to save time and my knuckles) and then use a fine scotch pad with polish to go a step back to satin. I restored my 82 CBX, about 10 years ago, but still work on her regularly to keep a fresh new look. My next job is to refurb the clocks. You are right, polishing the cam cover is probably the worst job on the whole restoration. Keep up the great video’s,

Yes, if you want it to look like chrome, but I do concours Restorations and that is why I mentioned in the video that I choose to do it by hand to get the exact factory look.

Hi Peter, love your videos. I am a long term owner of several 79 CBX's and other classic Japanese bikes, I share your passion but unfortunately not your talent. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Knifemakers use a simple hack for matte look for their knife - apply high polish progressing up to 2-3000 grit, then 1 or 2 pulls with 600 grit through the polished blade gives you a nice matte. Not sure tho whether it looks like Hondas factory finish, just a quick tip. Maybe worth a try for those using commercial finishing on renovated parts, getting it back like a mirror. Thx for your great videos, man, rare to find stuff on the net with such educational value!

Thank you Julio Good tip. I had a CB750 valve cover polished by a commercial polisher that came out way to chrome like that I will try that method or similar to try to get it right. I hope it works, it would make easier to the valve covers at least which are the most difficult. Thanks again Julio.

Hi Brow, dreams can be realized if you want it bad enough. Save a little money here and there then buy a project bike and build it over time. I have made many of my own dreams a reality by doing that. Good luck and thank you for supporting the channel. :)

Polishing aluminum, sounds like a job for a guy in HD truck detailing shop as they polish tanks, trim and rims all day. They usually use machines with polishing pastes and wheels. The few bucks may very well be worth your time.

Do you people not understand the term dissimilar metals? You cannot use steel brushes on aluminum. You fill it with metals that will corrode it. You may have made it look pretty for now, but you destroyed it in the process.
@digitalpizza1

That’s interesting, I have bikes that I restored 10+ years ago and the engine cases still look beautiful.

@@digitalpizza1As an aircraft mechanic for the last 27 years, what you did is forbidden on aluminum airplanes. I am restoring a 1980 Suzuki GS1000, and have used scotch brite and wet sanding to polish the case covers better than new. no dissimilar metal used.
@digitalpizza1
@digitalpizza1 Жыл бұрын
@@craigg4246 I am sure you are experienced in what you are pointing out, and don’t mean to show any disrespect, but what I didn’t make clear in the video is that the only areas that I use the steel brush are the tiny nooks and crannies that are otherwise very difficult to reach with anything else. I would never use the brush on the main surface of the cover. So the brush is barely used on the item. I, like you mainly use the scotch brute pads and wet sand paper.
