Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer:
amzn.to/2kyUwz7
I was hoping this Blue Devil would be a permanent repair for the blown head gasket on this Civic. I'm not totally convinced it did this. Although the block test did not show hydrocarbons in the cooling system after installation of the Blue Devil, I'm still smelling some coolant in the exhaust. It does seem to have calmed down the over heating problem, but even since shooting this video, it has began building up more pressure in the cooling system.
In this application, the blue devil will not be a permanent repair, unfortunately.

I know this vid is old but for anyone looking, First always remove thermostat. You can also check your thermostat by putting it in boiling water, if it opens it's good if it doesn't well then it's bad. Only leave thermostat out long enough to fix the leak with the sealer. Once fixed put thermostat back in. Personally I would put a new one in since you already have the old one out. Coolant smell from exhaust after fixing leak is caused from coolant still in converter/muffler which will burn out after while.

Thank you for posting this for everyone to see. BlueDevil does not always work! I have a similar model honda with a blown head gasket. I didn't have the money for the head job. I was sick and tired of pouring in antifreeze and the overheats. I got desperate and used this stuff. I tell ya, deju when watching this. Same exact thing happened to me. I followed the directions exactly. And before the 50-minute mark was up it started to overheat. I turned the car off--waited for it to cool and I popped the radiator cap to find all this white deposit junk. That same look you had on your face after you found out it failed was just like me. I was hoping to God this would finally fix it, nope it wasn't gonna be that easy. I took it for a spin around the corner and it overheated in 10 minutes whereas before it would overheat in maybe an hour. The next day I took out the thermo to find exactly what you found. The car is basically trashed. The white gulk is probably clogging all sorts of different facets of the cooling system. Please anyone reading this! Do not take the risk! it will make your problems ten times worse. Just save up and have a professional do the job.

When you car keeps overheating when doing the bluedevil you pop the radiator cap and let it run , keep putting water in and monitor the temp. Some people pull the plug to the dead cylinder to relive pressure while running the 50 mins.Mines did the same thing, keep radiator cool and then let her sit for 2 hours.

The instructions say that there’s no need to remove the thermostat but now that the misfire is gone (which tells me the leak has been addressed) everything the motor is doing now is telling me the thermostat is stuck or my cooling system is gunked up. Cylinder leak test showed a leak between cylinder 4 & the water jacket. No mixed oil and coolant so it wasn’t a bad leak and the car wasn’t overheating, just pushing coolant in the the reservoir and out of the radiator over time. Now it’s overheating within 5 minutes and the upper hose is limp and staying cool. I think this stuff while fixing the leak has put trash in my cooling system. 2008 Acura TSX (No oil/coolant mixing)

+John Flemming sounds more like head gasket. Combustion pressures will build up in the cooling system and blow radiator hoses and coolant tees, things like that. If you haven't already, you should get a block test (combustion leak test) done.

I would like to point out that after I removed the thermo it did not overheat and I drove it once and did not want to tempt it more. So it is also possible that it worked however, I have a few questions. Has it not overheated since you posted this video? I was weary to drive my car again because it overheated with the thermo in. But maybe that was because the coolant couldn't flow because the BlueDevil was gunking the thermo up. Also, have you installed a thermo in it since? because I know the car can run w/o but the fuel efficiency goes way down. I was thinking about driving my honda around for an hour and seeing if it overheats, If it doesn't then I think I might install a new thermo and see how that works. And one last question, when I went to check the thermo after putting in the BlueDevil the stuff was white gunk not grey and it was softish like rock salt do you think that means it didn't work? Thank you for your videos!
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+James Whyte Hi. Thanks for the response. The car actually gradually started to overheat more and more after the video. I had to baby it everywhere I went. The pressure would build up more slowly than before the BluDevil but quickly enough that extended highway speeds would trigger the overheat. What I ended up doing to offset the overheats was a couple things. 1) Put a toggle switch in the glove box for the cooling fans so I could decide when to turn them on. 2)Left the thermostat out. (Not worried about gas mileage only saving my engine) 3) I bought a radiator cap with a pressure release valve, so if I had to drive it very far, I could pull over and release the pressure in the cooling system, so as not to blow any hoses or anything. These things are all band aids until you can get it fixed. So do I think it worked for you? Maybe somewhat. I believe the stuff works to a certain degree, but it really depends on how bad your head gasket leak is. After using it myself, and seeing what it does inside the motor ( Ihave since replaced the head gasket) I don't believe that there is anyway it can work 100%. It will only lessen the leak. To what degree it lessens it, depends on ????? In any case. You will have to drive it to see what you think, just be prepared to turn it off and wait. Get one of those radiator caps with a pressure release, so when you pull over you can safely relieve all the excess pressure in the cooling system.

did you drain ALL the coolant and run only blue devil? says on bottle to drain down antifreeze "to allow enough capacity for blue devil". It mixes with the coolant that's escaping and slowly more and more fills the leaks. This may explain your big chunks of sealer at restricted points like your thermostat.
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Tony VanDine I did not drain all of the coolant. I did drain the radiator because the coolant reeked of gasoline, but I refilled it minus a quart, to make room for the blue devil. I honestly think it would have worked better if I had followed the instructions for the large bottle of blue devil. I'm not sure why the procedure is different for the small bottle if the chemical is the same.

maybe a coincidence your thermo failed at the same time with the blue devil. I would run the engine to 1K for 1-2 mins while using a cooling burping kit making sure to purge the air pocket in the system, and open a bleeder valve to let air out if the system has one before installing the rad cap.

@AppalachianDIY

Yes, assuming the blu devil works, you should put the thermostat back in. The purpose of keeping it out during the blue devil process is to allow free flow of the mixture, and to not clog up the thermostat. I also think it would allow an already overheating engine to stay cooler long enough for the blu devil to work properly.

You should of jumped your cooling fan on your civic with a paper clip or wire. And run your heat. If your coolant system is running hot during the blue devil process the coolant pressure goes up and makes it harder for blue devil to seal the headgasket leak, if you don't jump your fan your vehicle's bad headgasket can cause your coolant to steam away thru the combustion chamber out the exhaust and then the fan switch won't cut on cause your coolant is to low. And then there's the headgaskets that mix oil and coolant Drain mixed oil put fresh oil in. Then jump fans and follow all of the blue devil instructions.

@Clintaso
@Clintaso 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of old misinformed comments on here, so I’ll just give the run down as per Blue Devil’s website and staff members. There’s 2 Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealers, a white label and a yellow label. These are not just different sizes, they are completely different products. The yellow one is more concentrated and *requires* removal of the thermostat during the sealing process. The white label does not. Whether the white label works better without the thermostat in is up for debate but it does not *need* to come out like some people in the comments say. The different use case depends on the size and severity of the leak, not the size of the engine. (For example you can use this white label on a V8, you just need 2 bottles). Personally, for the white label, it’s a give and take, you can remove the thermostat and that may help it work more effectively, but it also may be more effective to leave the thermostat in, that way you don’t have to drain the coolant and the blue devil can continue to stay in the system and work as long as it needs to.
