My 2012 civic at 148k miles started 'half cranking'. It did this for a while, I believed it was a bad battery, or bad connections at battery. Eventually it did not crank anymore. It was the starter going bad. This was a very helpful video.

Just helped a friend with this job this weekend. One of the worst jobs I have had to do in a long time, especially if you are a larger person with bigger hands. There is ZERO room to work in that area. Removing the passenger front wheel and coming from the side with long extensions worked pretty well for us. Even still, it was a very time consuming job. We did get it done though, and the car is fixed. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video. I considered doing this on my civic. I went to Autozone starter cost is 185 with exchange. Watched your video and called my mechanic. 1.5 shop time for a total of 345 complete. I like working on cars but 3-6 hours isn't really motivation to save less than 200.

Thank you! This is the best video I’ve seen for a 2012 Civic. Watched several others and this one is spot on. It’s tight getting the starter out and much of what you are doing from below the vehicle is in the blind. The procedure used there I found to be the best. One tip, be careful reattaching the knock sensor connector as the pins in the male connector side are very small and thin. It’s real easy to bend them when reconnecting and cause a knock sensor fault.

Usually if you are getting power to everything else like the radio and lights but when you start it absolutely nothing happens, then it's probably the starter. If it does the thing where it "wants to start" or clicks and everything flashes it's probably the battery or alternator.

To all those that are considering doing it from under it is possible. However, I recommend you you guys doing it from above the engine bay. It is much easier to remove the intake manifold to gain access. On my model, 2014 civic si, you have to remove the radiator support which is about 8 bolts including accessories. If your curious about how to do it search 2.0 / 2.4 honda starter removal similar process.

I think the top bolt is either 12mm or 14mm bolt! Yes is little tricky the one on the top! You can use a swivel extension on the socket then use 3 inches regular extension by then you’ll be in the middle and it has little room for you to loosen the bolt or if you have a very long extension that go all the way out the wheel you can do the top! Thanks for watching!

PLEASE READ...IMPORTANT....This is way harder than it looks. Yes...it's ONLY two big bolts, two clips, and one small bolt. I'm fairly handy...I have air tools, and the car was jacked up. DON"T ATTEMPT THIS JOB...but if you do...Take the clips off before taking the two big bolts off. If you take the bolts off first, you have no leverage to get the clips off. They are in such an awkward place to reach. I managed to get the starter out, and get the new one installed, so that I could start the car....I'm handy and this took at least six hours total over two days, and it is the most frustrating job I have ever done...not just involving cars. (Also remember, if you bail out half way through, you'll need to pay for a tow.) Anyway...I couldn't get the top big bolt back in, so i took it to a garage. Because my wires weren't perfectly lined up, they had to remove the starter and start from the beginning. I ended up saving 30 mins of labour. This is one of the few jobs I've done myself..and I've done a lot...that I would never attempt again. YOU HAVE BEEN FOREWARNED.

My 2013 civic just stopped starting completely after about two weeks where the car wouldn’t start on the first key turn but second time started perfectly fine but today it wouldn’t start at all after a few attempts but I know my battery is fine as I just replaced it recently and the alternator is obviously working since all my electrical things work fine and my car stays on so I’m assuming it my starter as it is doing the same thing in this video but I’m really upset that my car has so many damn issues. I bought a civic because I thought it would be reliable but it’s been having more problems than any car I’ve ever had. I got my car to start on the fifth or sixth try randomly when it wasn’t even cranking at all but I really hope I’m wrong and it’s just a fuse or something. I would I get the shield if the axle is in the way
@junfam24
@junfam24 4 жыл бұрын
You just need to take the bottom bolt out just loosen the top bolt and pull down the shield, because the top of that the hole it has a slot so you can just slide down with out taking the top bolt out.

Can you explain better, I am having trouble
@junfam24
@junfam24 4 жыл бұрын
It’s only has two bolt it’s a 10mm bolt once you loosen the bottom bolt unthreaded by hand because if you use wrench you don’t have enough room, once the bottom bolt is removed just loosen the top bolt by 5 to 6 turn the. Just pull down the shield it should come out.

Why the heck do they make it so effing hard to change the darn thing?! Also, our 2012 Civic's starter went out at 82k miles and it is $500 from the dealer because we do not want to do this bitch job twice if we go the aftermarket route. Our 2009Toyota Yaris has 200k miles with original everything and 0 issues. Honda Sucks!!
