Mounting bolts are 14mm, manifold bracket has 2 10mm and 1 12mm. You dont need to take off the exhaust

I have changed many on the 1.8L and have never removed the exhaust or axle. The best approach is to take the passenger wheel off and use a long extension to reach the starter bolts. I am not touching rusty exhaust bolts here in NY that most certainly will break.

This was very clear, well photographed and narrated. The instructions were 100% accurate. Even the clear view of the swivel socket and extension through the right wheel well was spot on, the only way you will get to that top starter bolt for sure, since there is no room to move a ratchet between the starter and the bulkhead. Thank you for taking the time to do this!

Getting the exhaust pipe off was a non starter for me, so I had to work around it. The biggest hassle in my case, was removing all of the electrical connectors, in a very limited space, without breaking them. It was very difficult to see how each connector, dis-connected.

Wd 40 on the exhaust bolts and very carefully use an impact wrench to get them off. I did it and it was easy.

Liquid wrench or seafoam deep creep is a penetrant. WD40 is not. If you don't believe me watch the tests on the project farm KZfaq channel. Would work much better in this application

I just did this job 2 extremely helpful hints Remove the two exhaust bolts with the springs Make the pipe movable Remove the drive axle then this job is a breeze should take less than 2 hrs

I'm doing this job right now and the axle makes it so hard to maneuver tools and hands. Removing the upper bolt on the starter is where I'm stuck at the moment .

My 2012 cng is doing this to me too. In fact, I'm stranded at the moment and hoping it starts once it cools down. There's a different video where the guy unbolt the intake manifold and bungies it out of the way and easily accesses from the top. Likely have to go below for the bottom bolt, no matter what.

Seems that Honda installed the starter and oil pan then 3D printed the rest of the car around it. Pathetic and greedy engineering if you ask me.

Just paid $1200 to replaced starter Motor at Honda Dealer. Should have watched this video.

Ok I feel better now. I paid the same at a dealer. If I was still single without a family I’d try and do this myself but I don’t have the time.

There is a lot missing in the guide. I'm in the process of doing it now and trust me the $1200 the dealership charges is worth it. Without a lift it's takes at least an entire day to do this repair.

Sounds like you may have unplugged those wires, or plugged them in, but not securely. Has to be wire related unless you did a axle removal on yours.

"install the upper starter bolt" she made that sound so smooth and easy didn't she? For some reason they skipped that whole part didnt they? and those dont look like female hands thats for sure. BEWARE! Just guiding the starter into position with the wires connected is a task by itself, notice they skipped that part too. If your not mechanically inclined, dont waste your time. From underneath you literally cant see the top bolt because the way it designed. Makes it almost impossible for one person to use a mirror to see the bolt holes location while trying to insert the top bolt with your other hand. These videos are deceptional, the engineers actually design these cars on purpose to attack the DIYers. The way I did it was inserting the top bolt into the starter BEFORE putting the starter into position, letting the bolt hang gently on the starters top hole, bolting the lower bolt, then going back to the upper bolt to tighten it. Listen to Jason and remove the intake. Good luck and BLM(the statement).

Was taking the exhaust off beneficial? I've seen others do without it but made it look way harder

I ended up only taking the spring bolts out of the front of the exhaust and was able to move it over enough to reach. I actually ended up stripping one of the bolts so that became my next repair. I didn’t think about removing the manifold to go from top down, but it’s probably worth that extra trouble. It’s a huge pain doing this work from underneath. I was able to gain more access by removing the passenger tire as well.

This video provided almost no useful information for this job, literally no more helpful than a quick audio narration. No bolt sizes, tips for removing any of the connectors.

So show that you have to jack the Car up to work on it, then proceed to complete the repair on a lift....

hahaha... remove a section of exhaust pipe to change the starter! No problem... in California or Arizona maybe! Rust ffs RUST! Everyone outside of Cali and AZ, do yourselves a favor and go top down.. yes remove the intake manifold! Once the intake is clear the starter is completely accessible! Don't even need to lay down under the car or frig around with jacks and stands!
