As an added procedure, once the line has cleared, FILL TANK FIRST, have the assistant hold the brake, open the bleeder valve and compress the caliper, close bleeder, repump brakes, check fluid. It would be best to remove pads to completely drain caliper.

Not only is this for the specific vehicle I need to work on, but this is more of the most thorough and detailed explanations of this process I've seen. I always watch several videos to learn what to do because some people don't explain everything, or make mistakes, and sometimes there is conflicting information, but this video is the best resource I've ever seen on this. I don't think I've seen anything nearly this good for any procedure.

So, I just changed all my calipers, rotors and pads and bled my fluid on my 09 Accord and all Ive ever done is change my own oil. Ive never even seen someone do brakes before besides on KZfaq. It went great and your video was extremely helpful to the whole process. Thank you so much!

Great and detailed instructions. The dealer charges $145 for brake fluid change. I would pay for it if they perform the change this way. I feel like they were just going to take the old fluid out and top it off and take $145 for it lol

Different vehicles have different bleed sequences on which caliper to start with. All do not start with the right rear caliper as commonly assumed. The sequence is defined in the factory service manual and the reason has to do with the design of the particular brake system components. ASE Master Tech.

This hands down THEEE best video on how to correctly flush your brake fluid. I have watched others and they suck. As someone who did manage to put the cylinder to the floor, this is how I fixed it. Fill up the brake fluid reservoir and apply a suction pump to the brake caliper and start sucking. It will take a few minutes for all of the air to come out but keep refilling the reservoir until the extracted brake fluid is bubble free.

I think that you should have started from the right front side. The logic is that you start by the shortest brake line. In this honda you need to find the ABS Module (which is in the front right side, you can spot it in the minute 15:37 ). ❤ Maybe i am wrong but this is what I learned. Very detailed explanation though👌. Thanks!

I showed how Honda says to do it in their service information. Some models and manufacturers have you start in other positions but that is the info for this particular make and model.

Excellent video as always. Wish that hose had been new/clear, would have been nice to see the color change as it flowed out. I'd switch the catch bottle to a 2 liter so you can get through an entire vehicle without having to stop and dump.

Nice video! Question.. have you heard of bleeding the system from the furthest wheel from master cylinder? So if master cylinder is on driver side.. you would start on passenger side rear, driver side rear, passenger side and then finally driver side. That was a rule of thumb I’ve used

Starting at the wheel further from master cylinder is the basic rule if there is no service info indicating to do it in another order. On this Honda Civic (and many Hondas), the bleeding order I showed is the exact service info from Honda. Thanks for the comment!

I followed exactly what whats done here to the t. And i can say it works. I have brakes now. I followed the exact bleeding sequence here for hondas not the old school way (far side to near side) and this worked out great!! Saved me a trip to the mechanic! Thank you for this video

Excellent lesson. I start to buy some stuffs and will do some tasks for my wife's 2006 Civic in near future. 99 usd oil change now in Cal dealership? The guy even said where have I been? Kind of disrespectful talking to your costumer like that. One last oil change done at dealership than I will do it myself. 4 tasks to do for 2006 Civic costing over 2.5 grand for a 4k usd car value? No way. Car got very low mileage to this point, 65K miles only... Still have to do with my 2014 Accord from now on at home.....too... And near future with my son's car too.

Dot 3 and Dot 4 are interchangeable so you can use either.

Why does Honda recommend starting at the closest caliper/circuit than the furthest like most models? I was always told start at the rear right, furthest from the cylinder.

The Civic in this video has ABS and the bleed sequence I showed will also bleed the ABS modulator (there is no separate procedure). This is true of many Honda ABS systems but not all.

Sometimes breaking it can't be avoided, but I would let it soak with penetrating oil first. Sometimes I will tap on the end of the ratchet with a hammer to get an impacting action to help. Tightening (barely) with a ratchet can sometimes break the rust bond too, just have to be careful doing that.

I did this on my 3 hondas and the brake pedal would lock up and really hard to press when the car was turned off. I turned on the car and then brake pedal would function again (possibly because of good vacuum from intake). Did you encounter this problem?

That is normal, after the first few presses of the brake pedal all the brake booster vacuum is used up and will not return to normal until the engine is turned back on.

Dave, is this bleeding procedure just for Honda's, I've always heard-and did-you bleed the rear brakes ( R-rear-L-rear) and then the front (R-front-L-front) ones?

The sequence I showed is for the Civic in this video. Many other Hondas use the same sequence as this one but not all Hondas do. The old rule of thumb was to start at the wheel furthest from master cylinder, however nowadays it is best to consult vehicle manufacturer service info to find correct sequence as many times the manufacturer will deviate from the rule (as Honda does).

Each vehicle model has a specific bleed sequence of exactly what caliper to bleed first, second, third, and fourth. Never assume that there is some "standard" bleed sequence for all vehicles, there is none. This is specified in the vehicle factory manual. If you do not have the genuine factory manual set then an alternative is to go to your Honda dealer and ask a technician there to give you the sequence. Most will be happy to assist you if you're cool with them! ASE Master Tech.

Just go to Home Depot and buy 3/16-inches by 5/16-inches. Vinyl clear tubing. It comes pretty long so just cut it to 30 inches

I'd stick to OEM fluids (brake, type2 coolant and transmission fluids... specially for Hondas.

Yes, Honda is very particular about their fluids being made by Honda, especially with the engine coolant, the automatic transmission fluid, and the power steering fluid. These must be made by Honda because they are special. However, in the case of brake fluid Type 3 is the standard brake fluid and is glycol-based. Type 4 is also glycol-based and thus either type can be used in the brake system and are miscible with each other. I use Prestone Type 3 in my vehicles flush the system and throw away the unused partially filled bottle. There are differences between these two types. and for every good thing, there is a bad thing... the DRY BULB (i.e brand new brake fluid from an unopened bottle) boiling point Type 3 is 401 deg F and Type 4 is 446 deg. F. Type 4 is more popular in ABS and Traction-control brake systems because of its lower viscosity compared to Type 3. Both of these types are hygroscopic and readily absorb water but Type 3 absorbs it less than Type 4. Water and dirt are the enemies of brake systems and all hydraulic systems for that matter. Water boils at a much lower temperature than brake fluid. The intense heat of friction when the brakes are applied, causes this water to boil and create steam that reduces braking efficiency. Further, this moisture RUSTS components in the brake system. For this reason, brake fluid should be flushed out once a year to avoid very high major repair bills downstream. All brake fluid degrades over time and becomes less efficient in braking the vehicle. If you look at your master cylinder fluid reservoir and the brake fluid is black then it is filled with dirt that ingresses into the system through the caliper seals every time you press the brake pedal. No seals made are a 100% seal! You know it's time to flush your system out. ASE Master Tech. .

I don't know the color but I do believe some of it was repainted at one point due to paint damage from the desert sun.

@@BigDog50001 I live in south east asia and just one degree north of the equator..(i am in Singapore) We do not have desert condition but lots of sunshine and rain (it has been raining two or three consecutive days lately).. Our immediate northern neighbour,Malaysia, experiencing 2nd flood episode.. So car paintwork here can get oxidized and rusted like daily..

Hi great video 👍🏼. I have a 2008 Honda Civic 1.8l and I’m having issues with the calibers sticking. I installed new calibers, slider pins, rotors, brake pads and both front brake line hoses. I’m still getting sticky calibers in the front causing the rotors to get hot while driving. I did a complete brake flush to make sure there’s no air in the lines and filled the brake fluid reservoir to the correct full level but can not seem to find the problem. There’s no leaks around the master cylinder, no ABS or break lights on and the brake lines look good. Brake fluid runs through the front and back brake lines properly. Break calipers are moving properly. I’m stuck on this one. If you or anyone have any ideas on what my issue is can you please let me know. There are No codes showing and no warning lights. Thank you.

Hi yes, customers vehicle had rusty brake dust shields. A peace of it was Stuck on the inner side of the rotor and caliber causing it to heat up. Replaced both brake dust shields, problem solved. Thank you, great video 👍🏼

Question: Honda’s BSing by saying you must Honda Dot 3 fluids? As long as you meet the specifications, it shouldn’t matter.

DOT 3 is a national specification not a proprietary one like Honda coolant for example. I have no problem using DOT 3 brake fluid from reputable aftermarket manufactures.

Isn't the whole purpose of the strainer to strain the fluid while you put it in? Seems kind of useless if you just take it out first. I get that you need to see the level, but still.

It's not a bad idea to reinstall it before adding fluid.
