My brothers 2005 Honda Element was having a strange issue with the clutch. Even with the pedal depressed, it seemed like the clutch was still engaged making it difficult to shift gears.
In this video I diagnose the problem and replace the clutch. For additional information on this job, see the engine replacement videos linked below.

I changed 4 clutches on my 1980 Honda Accord I had. I put a Japanese used engine in it and it didn't have a place for the pilot bearing in the back of the crank. The springs would fall out and would stay in gear. Cost me a red light ticket once. In 81 they incorporated the pilot bearing into the transmission. I wasn't smart enough back then to go get an 81 standard transmission and fix it right.

Again, same visual differences as this. It seems like the Luk is not correct from the factory. The Luk brand is normally a good aftermarket clutch brand but doesn't seem to be right for this application.

I go on a lot of camping and climbing trips and in doing so I haul a few hundred pounds of gear over rutted out forest roads and snow. Needless to say I encounter moments where I have to stress the clutch more than most would. I have seen where folks have upgraded the clutch to the Acura RSX Type S clutch and flywheel. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade or would it be best to stick with Element OEM?

This is why you always use the same manufactorer's clutch as the factory one was. It was designed to work with that, and even small differences can make it not work. Especially tru with the dual mass flywheels. If you install a different manufactorer's one, you can even break the transmission.

This is linked in the description. The only difference is the PTO on the back of the trans on the Element AWD applications. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7iCjbiY1Lnelmg.html

Hi Eric, came to find a clutch video to help me diagnose the problem with my 2003 MT Element. I was driving the vehicle and when I put it in first or second gear, can’t remember, I thought I felt like a snap and s ping in the clutch pedal. I drove home and didn’t really notice any issues. The next day I started the vehicle but can not put it into gear. Before I take it to a mechanic K was hoping to get an idea of what it could be. Also not sure if I would need to take it to Honda or any mechanic would be sufficient to repair. Of course I’m hoping to have a better idea of the problem so I can have more sense when they talk with me, also perhaps be able to ask some questions. Thanks in advance for your help.

When inserting the input shaft through the clutch hub, how do you get the splines to line up? The clutch cant move because it's attached to the engine and you can't turn the input shaft by hand because it's concealed by the bellhousing. Is there a trick to this? Thanks.

I bet the guy that put that old clutch in never compared the parts he was installing ! And so the parts house sold him the wrong clutch . It worked for a while till it stopped releasing .. Great Job Eric !! ENJOYED, Happy Brother to ..

Interesting. I wouldn't have guessed something about the thickness or whatever could be that close to cause this issue. I still think the clutch on my Accord V6 has to come out since replacing the hydraulics didn't fix this similar issue for me.

The timelapse music was a joy to listen too :-) Good move to save the 'old' clutch from your element, i also always save parts that are good enough to reuse at some point. And i'm glad my new LUK clutch works as it should.

I actually think this clutch was the wrong part for this application. I don't think it was an issue with the clutch itself.
