You just saved my day! I haven't had my GCV160 serviced in at least 5 years. Just kind of forgot. Today I pulled the cord and it only went halfway. Uh oh! I followed your instructions and bought a liter of 10W30 SAE from Canadian Tire. Emptied the old (dark and dirty!) oil from the mower, filled it back up with the new stuff. I had to (somewhat gently) pull the starter cord a bunch of times to get things moving again, but once I got it moving it was able to start the engine normally again. Tip for any other novices like me: If you get a lot of smoke after you've done the oil change and started it up, it may mean you've overfilled the oil reserve. That's what I did. I just poured some back out and tried again. No more smoke. The dipstick on these mowers is hard to read when you're checking for too much oil.

@@LarryBloom Well he's not bragging, but just saying that the motor is very durable even without maintenance for 10 years. I've had mine for 5 years and I haven't done any maintenance whatsoever, I also live in Canada where winters get super cold and this thing runs great. Again, this is no brag but just a testament to a great engine. I'm about to do my first oil change right now, change the air filter, clean it up as recommended, hoping to do this more regularly from now on.

Nicely done, thank you. An old farmers tip for the burnt oil, save a worn paint brush to brush burnt oil onto the undercarriage. This will aid mulching by helping to prevent cut grass build up, especially when wet.
@nearlynormal
@nearlynormal 4 жыл бұрын
To prevent oil spilling on mower deck and floor as you tilt the mower, leave the dipstick screwed in until you have the mower completely tipped up on its side. Then loosen the dipstick until the big notches in the threads of the dipstick are exposed allowing the oil to drain out. Do not completely remove dipstick.Just enough to allow the oil to drain. When drained, re tighten dipstick before righting mower. Again, this prevents oil dripping on floor and mower deck. Remove dipstick, wipe clean and re fill engine with oil.

Hey Know How - remember, NearlyNormal, from above, means not quite normal. If you do it his way, you will likely get oil all over your hand when you pull the dipstick out while the mower is tilted all the way over. I agree with Nemo - just wipe the little bit off the deck top when you're done - your way is probably better!

I was wondering about this too. After I read in the manual that the engine oil tank was 0.58 quarts, I was trying to confirm the amount to refill. Your numbers match what I found in the manual, 12.0 ~ 13.5 oz (0.35 ~ 0.41 l). I went by the dipstick when I refilled mine, but it appeared I was only putting in about 1/4 of a quart, so I was trying to confirm. This video helped, thanks.

@Know-How-Now
@Know-How-Now 4 жыл бұрын
I did a lot of research before I made the video about the rags being combustible. I later found out the it's only certain kinds of oils that are combustible. Motor oil does not oxidize. My brother is a machinist, every shop except the present one he works at treated oily rags as if they could spontaneously combust. I know that linseed oil does oxidize, it used to be used in paints. Unless you are sure of what kind of oil you are using, I would bag it in plastic as a precaution.

Apparently, motor oil cannot spontaneously combust, but some other oils can. I could not find a good source that listed which oils oxidize. Oil based paints and stains are often cited. My brother is a machinist, he scoffed at me when I suggested that petroleum based oils will not spontaneously combust. He said machine shops put their oily rags in a metal container with a lid. I am going to continue to put any kind of oily rag in a bag. I would spend more time trying to figure out if it is or isn't a potential hazard. If you want to read about spontaneous combustion here is a link to an MIT document on the topic: web.mit.edu/parmstr/Public/NRCan/CanBldgDigests/cbd189_e.html

Honda makes great engines but I'm curious how/why they didn't have an oil filter on these engines. Crazy to me.
@JulianA-tr6pt
@JulianA-tr6pt 4 жыл бұрын
It's not just these, most push mowers sized engines don't use oil filters. They don't really have an oil flow system, like a car does, so there isn't a pump to push it through a filter. It essentially is just splashed on the moving components in the engine using an oil slinger. These are pretty simple engines, and the small amount of oil they use is ideally changed frequently enough to make a filter unnecessary.

How did you drain it??? If it doesn't have a drain plug underneath then how would you drain it the video was great and affirmative, until... you didn't show how to give it an oil change.

I am sorry that the video no longer shows tipping the mower and letting the oil drain out of the fill tube. Somehow, there is a glitch with the KZfaq playback and that segment of the video is no longer being shown. Hopefully KZfaq fixes the problem, that segment of the video used to play, you will notice that until just recently (video has been posted for years), people are commenting about how to drain the oil. Agh. Sorry.

Many recommend doing that, but I don't see the point and chose not to put it in the instructions. You have to hold the safety bar and pull the cord to start the mower. Maybe I'm missing something, but how could the mower spontaneously start while changing the oil?

Well, that's weird. I just watched my original mp4 video and it shows the mower being tipped and the oil dumping into the container. I'll have to see if I can do something about that.... not sure why it is missing from the youtube playback.

I don't see anything I can do about the oil dump shot disappearing from the video. Maybe KZfaq will correct it and the full video will reappear again. Thanks for telling me. A comment 9 days ago also asked about dumping the oil too, which I thought was odd. The video has been published 4 years - you and Kelly York are the only ones asking about how to actually drain the oil. It must be a relatively new "glitch".

Very articulate lady with clear speech and overall great video taking(clarity of what is shown)! But the content is not good. She skipped important info or missed to elaborate. For example.... around the 3:00 min mark of the video, her dipstick measurement reading is confusing because the filler neck is at angle so when one takes measurements the top side of the dipstick registers (almost 30+% more along the scale) oil reaching at a level that is considerably different than at the UNDERSIDE of the dipstick. The question then becomes, which reading to you take into account? The easy answer is offcourse the higher one but one may just check the underside of the dipstick and call it good. Then, as all engine manuals suggest, never overfill (which can break seals and damage the engine).

Hi George, constructive criticism is always welcome. I tell you the capacity of the oil and the range of oil needed to refill and show you the oil on the cross hatches. I assume that the viewers are intelligent enough/have common sense to figure out the final level of oil to add. If I went on and on about getting the level perfect people as you suggest, people would be complaining... I stick to the topic of the title and assume a reasonable level of common sense. Perhaps the style/level of information on this channel does not meet your needs and maybe I am missing a potential audience. You can capitalize on my weakness and post your own video on how to change the oil on a Honda Mower with more detail.

Initially, I thought it was kind of dumb not to have drain plug. Though, in some ways maybe not so bad. You don't have to have to fight to get a drain plug loose. It's easier to dump it.

If it had a drain plug, it would be on the underside of the mower, you would have to tip it to remove it. If you clean the deck you would have to tip it on it's side to do that too. I just changed the oil in mine. After tipping it, it started on the first pull. I mowed the lawn. No problems.

Use 600 cc (same as 600 mL), quit using "ounces" - it's from 422 BC - from King Edward of BRITAIN. Get with THE TIMES, Americans!! Hint: you all (Americans) ALREADY use metric in nutritional content, prescriptions, ENGINE SIZES (you state "160" - this is cc!!), an SO much more.

@@Know-How-Now Oh - I should probably add - (just a fun "fyi"): Albert Einstein, Ben Franklin, George Eastman (from Eastman/Kodak), Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell (and MANY others) - all of whom *refused* to use imperial - at that time in an "all imperial" America. Ben Franklin was such a "Grinch" that he stood on a soap box - trying to tell people and convince them to get RID of this British system (that the USA *still* uses!!) and ue the new SCIENCE system. He failed (as did Einstein, Edison, Bell, etc. Americans don't realize that the USA signed a treaty that they would be COMPLETELY metric - by 1976 (!!!!) In a world where you're not supposed to "hate", Americans *hate* metric, ... ... although they use metric in their daily lives: - Prescriptions and nutritional content are all in mg (milligrams). Can you imagine someone saying "I need 22/1,000 of an ounce tablets of Thiamine." Or "This label states that it has 1/300 of an ounce of protein." - All vehicle engines are all in liters (intentionally mis-spelled from the correct "litres"). People don't say "I have a 302 in my car!!" any more - they say "I've got a 5.0!" - The tires on your car are [example]: 205/75 R15 (205 is Millimetres!) the 75 is profile % and the 15 is inches). - Bolt patterns (for USA cars!) for rims: Ford: 5x114.3 mm, 4x108 mm, GM: 5x115 mm, 5x120.7 mm, Dodge: 5x100 mm, 5x114.3 mm. (all MILLIMETRES!) - When a pregnant woman is dilated, the cervix is measured in cm (centimetres) - Wine is sold in litres. - Booze is sold in mL (millilitres = 1,000 of a liter) - Sodas are sold in 2 litre bottles. - All spectacles (glasses and sunglasses) are in mm (MILLIMETRES). They are measured by the Tech and manufactured in mm. - Motorcycles (and all small engines: lawn mowers, go-cart, snow blowers...) are all in CC. - Carburetors are all measured in mm. - Skis are all in cm (centimetres). One doesn't go to buy a "Rossignol 5'10" ski - one buys a "Rossignol 175" ski. And yes, a proper ski size is typically one's height: 175cm, etc. - Orthopedic balls ("Swiss ball") are all in cm. - All runs and walks in the USA (like the "walk for cancer") are all in k (kilometres) - That 9mm Pistol? That's 9 Millimetres. - A hectare is 10,000 square METERS. I have 272 other examples, but I'll let it rest there. Also, my kung Fu Sifu taught me: "Man who think he too insignificant to make a change - never been in bed with a mosquito."

It’s so simple. It’s actually a great design. My dads Honda mower is 35 years old. Mine is 15. I let mine drain for hours because I want all the old oil out. How hard is it to tilt the mower to its side? It’s not. I use synthetic here in Minnesota because fall can get cold fast here.
