Thank God you made this video. I got my metro for my 16th birthday. And my parents said that if it breaks that I should learn to do it myself. I've had it for 2 years and it wouldn't start. I didn't really know where to start but you helped me. Thank you. P.S. it works now.

Jon, Thanks for the great video. Replacing the fuel pump on my wife's 2002 Metropolitan solved the hard start and stalling problems. We've had problems since 2300 miles and it now has 3200 miles. I took it to a Honda dealer and they charged me $125 to rebuild the carb. It just didn't run right even after that. The dealer said that was the best they could do. Now I know it was the fuel pump going out. When I finally trouble shot, I took the carb apart and it looked fine. I then turned on the ignition and got no gas out of the gas line. I found your video and discovered the sound my pump was making (clock-clock-clock-clock-clock) was the same as yours. The new pump is quiet, gas gets pumped through the fuel line, and the Metro runs like new again. Thanks again. For others, while you're in there I would recommend replacing all of the fuel lines as well as the filter. The fuel lines were very brittle (13-14 years on this 2002).

I've had a hard time starting my 09 Metropolitan. The poor little thing has sat for most of it's life. I'm pretty sure that old gas sitting in it did do it any favors.

By the way my Metropolitan has over eight thousand miles on it! I have done the oil changes air filter maintenance etcetera by myself for a long time and I've dress it up with a considerable amount of Chrome. But your information on the fuel pump replacement was invaluable thanks again you truly do rock

My sentiments exactly. Its just seems everything has to be ordered from the dealer. tick, tock comes to mind. Your very imformative , speak clearly & no crappy tunes in the background. Did i mentioned a speedy reply ? i did now. Thank You . 👌
@toddstoughton80187 жыл бұрын
You should hear the ticking when you turn the key but it will stop when it reaches pressure. If it ticks all the time it is not reaching pressure and is bad. Sometimes if it is bad it won't tick at all. Pull the hose off the carb and see if fuel pumps out the hose. Mine did but not enough to keep it running FYI.

Thanks for posting this video! It means from now on...if I hear that steady 'tick-tick-tick' I'll know exactly what's wrong...and how to fix it! (I think I'll just order the parts now...my '08 has 5400 on it and runs 'better than new' because of Pollini -variator and Kevlar belt and 4.5 gram weights...top-end is 47!!! on level ground w/high-octane fuel & standard NGK plug, and I weigh 220lbs.!)

@ericwipperfurth6077 жыл бұрын
Jon, my question has nothing to do with the fuel pump/filter replacement. Did you repaint your "flares" in the back and around the headlight in the front? I own one that has a hideous purple pattern and I was thinking of painting the front and sides flat black like you have on yours. That would greatly cut down on the heckling I receive at work! Your bike shows me the flat black all around will look pretty good. If you did repaint it, do you have any suggestions before I get started?
@Jonehughes7 жыл бұрын
yes 3 rattle cans and I was good to go I only use Krylon paint though Krylon is awesome
@ericwipperfurth6077 жыл бұрын
Did you sand the original surface at all or just go directly over the top? How well as it held up? Did you clearcoat it?
@Jonehughes7 жыл бұрын
yes I sanded with 220 just to knock off the sheen and then sprayed it and it worked out perfect Krylon sticks great is going on four years now

Thanks for the information. I've used the Krylon stuff before and it has worked well for me too. I think I have a winter project!

Hi Jon, I have a 2008 that sat in the garage for years without starting. I put a new battery in, new fuel filter and spark plug, the carburetor is squeaky clean. Sucker cranks but no gas is getting to the carb so it doesn't turn over. I've got my fuel pump ordered and in the mail so I'm hoping that works. I'll let you know how it goes!

My metro has 24000 miles and the fuel pump is original. I did preventive fuel filter change. If the filer is clogged, it will damage the pump. Seems this scooter has never had the filter replaced. Btw, never heard of anyone else having pump failures.

Is the key to the gas cap and the key to start the scooter the same? I lost my key and I’m trying to make a new one! Thanks for the help!
@Jonehughes3 жыл бұрын
That's a weird question brother If you have one that opens the gas cap I'm not sure why you wouldn't just insert it into the starter And turn it on Or if you have one that turns on the starter Why you wouldn't take that one and just plug it into the gas cap and unscrew it I can't figure it out anyway I believe through all the years they're all the same 🤣😂 You are killing me man 😎
@IroflpwndU3 жыл бұрын
@@Jonehughes lol! Maybe I should have explained myself. My wife lost the keys 5 years ago and I’m surprising her for Valentine’s Day by making a key for it and getting it working again. So the easiest thing is to take in the gas cap to a locksmith (the gas cap is easy to pick. The ignition is hard to take out and bring to the shop 😅) Anyway, hope that’s solved the mystery and THANK YOU for your answer! Big help :)
@Jonehughes3 жыл бұрын
You probably already know this But the key code is in the gas cap So the key maker doesn't have to pick it To make you a key He justs has to look at the code That is on the cap kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrRliqeJrLXVmaM.html
@IroflpwndU3 жыл бұрын
@@Jonehughes i do know that! And I actually just got back from the locksmith making a key based on the key code (I had taken a picture and brought the picture in). It didn’t work :(surprisingly). So he said to just bring in the gas cap.. then i wondered if it is really the same key for both the gas cap and ignition haha

Won't the fuel leak out once you disconnect the fuel line? If not, how do you recommend I empty the fuel tank? Mine won't turn on and I'd like to put fresh gas in.
@Jonehughes8 жыл бұрын
You answered your own question Ralph, yes, it will leak out, and when it's all done leaking, you can then put in fresh gas ;-)
