Hate to say it, but the TBI engines are gutless... Super reliable, but weak when it comes to passing power. My 93 c2500 has a 350 TBI, good torque off the line, but nothing after second gear. My 97 has the 350 vortec and runs like a champ with good power. Those vortec heads, roller camshaft and mpfi make a huge difference.

I have a 95 z71 tbi that even before I swapped the auto out for a 5 speed, you hit the throttle it would run. Plenty of passing power. Even better with the NV4500.

up here in Canada the front fenders and box are always rusted out and the cab corners but other than that they are pretty good daily drivers. I own a 98 Chev 2wd as my daily and has done a lot to keep her on the road.The interior's up here I have never seen a cracked dash on any of these trucks but that's probably do to climate differences.

My 88 Chevy Silverado standard cab short bed has been great so far for the years I've owned it. It currently has around 268,000 miles on the odometer and still runs like a champ. Basic maintenance on it will keep it running reliably forever and keep the interior looking good. As far as performance there are some mods you can to it like headers and exhaust plus an air intake and some sort of ignition cd box like msd makes a big difference, also you can mod the tbi for more air and if you swap to 3.73-4.10 gears in the differential they are fun to drive and a big improvement coming off the line. These are starting to go up in price in certain areas of the country as they are quickly becoming the next classic truck to own, so if you're considering getting one get it now before the prices get ridiculous like the c/k10 20 trucks are now.

I have a '95 K2500 w/ 6.5l TD and 4L80E trans - my first car and it's been mine now for ~10 years. Wouldn't trade that pickup for anything, I can't wait to finish it's restoration to original condition this coming fall. Oh, another reason to own one of these - you really have to work to get them stuck in the snow - if you aren't being a dumbass you'll always have traction. Excellent presentation.

I've got a two GM's on the road daily. First is a 93' Chevy K2500 Cheyenne with a 5.7L and NV4500 manual trans., the sun of a bitch when in 4low with its granny low gear could rip a stump out idling. Second is a 97' GMC Sierra k3500 airbagged duelly with a 7.4L and 4L80E auto trans., and it's hauled everything I've asked of it and more. Both have 230,000+ miles and can go at least another 230,000 miles. I'd be absolutely shocked if they didn't.

This is a good and honest review. I had a 1990 GMC C1500 and a 1992 Chevy K1500 both with the 5.7 TBI and can attest to everything you point out... good and bad. Both were white and the paint sucked. Back in the day GM would cover the cost of a full repaint at the dealer. I had it done to both of them. Even with the flaws, I think they are some of the best trucks ever made. On your high idle issue... I had the same thing happen on my 1990 GMC when I cut the cat off. Also caused it to run lean and knock unless the timing was retarded from normal spec. Ended up buying a Super Chip designed for no cats. After I put it in I swear that truck was a serious sleeper. Anyway you may check into that. They don't like not having the back pressure of the cat. It screws with the computer/sensor parameters.

The TBI trucks were far less troublesome than the CSFI Vortec of the 96-98 years. Bet you never get a PO300 code with this truck. I've had two Vortec trucks with nothing but random misfire problems.

@hudsonhawk0016
@hudsonhawk0016 4 жыл бұрын
@@Poorboyzgarage447 the random misfire as you know could be the injectors or the distributor. It was assumed that the corrosion between the cap and rotor or bad wires or plugs was causing the PO300 code. It's the piece of shit plastic distributor housing causing the problem. The shaft wobbles enough to cause this even though it doesn't seem loose when moved by hand. The solution is the MSD aluminum housing distributor. 9 times out of 10 it's the remedy. A MPFI injector spider isn't a bad idea either.

I like the vortecs, the biggest problem with them that I found is the spider injectors and intake manifold gaskets. I still very much prefer the TBi engines but I can't deny how quickly the vortec engines fire up and they make a little more power, My 1997 fires up with just a tap of the key, my 92 blazer with tbi take a few seconds to fire up, not really important, just an observation.

From what I've seen the paint on these trucks is actually better than most vehicles today. I definitely prefer the older dash style than the mid 90s redesigne and I'd say the dashes aren't necessarily bad quality, they are definitely not top tier but as far as I've seen ford and dodge didn't do any better, to last 20 years or more without a crack is pretty impressive when you compare it to newer gm trucks that usually can't last 8 to 10 without a crack. I've noticed the older 4l60s that aren't electronically controlled seem to shift so much smoother and do a lot less goofy stuff. My biggest problem with these truck is the gas mileage and the doors that always sag and are alway missing the roller that keeps the door from shutting on you. But other than that these are definitely my favorite trucks.
