@Screen Junkies Glass has some problems but it's not a Bad Movie. Personally it was good enough for me. I liked it more than Split (I am not a huge Fan of Split) but it comes not even close to be as amazing as Unbreakable. The Ending of Glass in particular really, really frustrates me.

I liked Glass!!! I watched them all together for first time in 2022, and they really are unique amazing well done movies! I think they were first digested by audience in the wrong context, and with the wrong expectations (eg with height of marvel, everyone expected certain markers of a modern superhero movie, or people loved the thriller indie horror of split and expected to see that amped up-but glass was not trying to be those things and you cannot apply the same framework of expectations). I see and appreciate the consistency of themes throughout all three AND the justice he gives to characters trauma healing arcs AND the complexity with which he questions and approaches life/mental health/self belief. I think Nights movies are both from another older time And ahead of their time

i kinda liked it. It's refreshing. A needed break from all the overly saturated and overpowered superhero movies. This movie made you question if they're normal or actually superpowered. It was a more down to earth superhero movie. No godlike beings. No "i can destroy planets" "well im immortal" "well i have a death stone" "well i have an anti death stone"
@kevinw712
@kevinw712 5 жыл бұрын
As Spencer pretty much directly touched upon, it's not like this fundamental concept of "a REALLY grounded superhero tale" was rejected in of itself. I think that's a perfectly valid and interesting way to approach the lore of comic books and superheros, but concept and execution are 2 very different things. hell part of the reason 2001's "Oceans 11" remake worked so well, the original concept that the Rat Pack had back in the 60s for robbing a casino for a massive score was great, especially with the talent involved. yeah except the finished movie they made is truly unwatchable, it is AWFUL. With "Glass", I understand what M Night was attempting to do (that's another thing some people will harp on about a particular polarizing movie, they'll claim "well those guys who didn't like it obviously didn't really even get it") there were simply too many other kinda basic filmmaking issues at which M kinda failed in my view and so made a rather mediocre movie. However I will add that overall I do respect M Night for how he was attempting this. I hadn't known anything about that he financed this movie himself, and he wasn't trying to go by some checklist of what he THOUGHT the audience MIGHT be wanting. I may not have particularly liked the ending to this particular one (I enjoyed both Unbreakable and Split) myself, but I respect that he was telling his story and being only accountable to his creative vision.

@@kevinw712 I find the "failed execution" argument trotted out fairly often in films that deliberately subvert expectations. Minus specifics, it's hard to say that criticisms of execution are not also personal subjective opinion, masquerading as an objective critique over filmmaking. This video didn't say much that hasn't been refuted already.
@kevinw712
@kevinw712 5 жыл бұрын
@@gngnome Well first, honestly most of any sort of criticisms of film (or pretty much any type of art, for that matter) are ultimately subjective opinion. Though of course there are elements of filmmaking, the 'how to' of it, that indeed are more empirical, the simple definition of what 'that thing' or process even is. But even those who champion this movie, I can't fathom how they don't even acknowledge the pacing in particular is just sub-par. And I'm not sure how you guys that apparently really like the movie, how far you mean to take the "subvert expectations" angle in particular. cause I feel fairly confident in saying that pretty much nobody came into Glass thinking it was going to be anywhere even a little bit close to seeming like it could've, say, fit right in to the likes of the MCU (though ironically I think part of what made that so successful over the first phase or two at least was a certain level of trying to approach those grander stories from a somewhat 'grounded' reality). Or that it would be some adventure story of supposed more "realistic" kind of superheroes. Though also the tone (as much as can be surmised from text on a screen) of your last sentence there seems to feel like it's conveying something more of a scientific-like idea of something being proven. All in all as I've said most of it really comes down to opinion at the end of the day and this simply was a rather flawed mediocre movie to me and I still feel like this Honest Trailer makes a perfectly valid case why.
@gngnome
@gngnome 5 жыл бұрын
@@kevinw712 it's interesting that you jumped to the MCU as the set of expectations that were subverted. Anyone having MCU like expectations from Glass going in wasn't going to like the movie, period. But no, I was referring to the expectations the movie itself subverts as a part of its narrative. That is deliberate. It's a genuine narrative technique that makes the viewer uncomfortable or left hanging. These days I notice that is often mistaken for shoddy editing and as a pacing issue.

It's such a shame that the critics ride the masses dick when a director that s known to make "bad" (actually amazing) movies have a new movie come out that s instantly hated by everyone even though it's one of the most memorable, unique, tearjerking movie and probably best superhero take on Hollywood ever to be presented. The score was amazing and I soon hope people realize the quality of the film and how much it should increase the standards of superhero and thriller genres alike

The movie suffered in the pacing and it was hard to balance the characters in an organic way. I was so excited for Glass and left feeling really disappointed. They kill everyone and the "big reveal" was really predictable. Very little was explored about the whoever the tattooed group was or anything interesting. It was just a shame it was so average! McAvoy deserves a bloody oscar nomination for his work though, really made the film once again

I dont care if you dont like this movie. Can we all agree that James McAvoy killed it? Also can you say: "Please comment below what you would like me to say in my epic voice."

When you’re expexting overwrought Marvel superhero schlock, Glass is underwhelming. I, for one, liked the subtler take on the superhero genre,

I do too. But the twist came a bit out of nowhere- even for Shyamalan. I wish Marvel or DC would make more street level stuff like Joker. Red Hood or Question could work great for DC and so could Blind Spot, Union Jack, or Moon Knight for Marvel. Edit: Scarlet Spider could work too.

I liked Glass. It was not as good or as surprising as Split but it did it's job. Final act could be improved, that's for sure.

I liked the movie and thought it was worth seeing, but I think some of the satire here was still accurate. Their superpowers on display in the video recordings were not much greater than what I think we could see normal people do with discipline and development. Many of their gifts really could possibly be explained away with psychotherapy. Still, I liked the movie for what it was.

"Glass" is a great movie that is 8 to 10 years too late to the superhero cinematic crossover party. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, there could've been a much better reception for it then. I think the point of it now may be that people can appreciate it as they contrast it to the current CGI/super-action packed comic movies

@@diyalectic52 That is a good way to look at it. There are also several super hero TV and streaming programs now that work with modest budgets and effects nowadays.

This is probably the first honest trailer I did not like. Glass was definitely a bit unusual movie for today's super hero money conveyer. However it is self-funded movie with original take. You have to have balls to put your own money on super risky idea. Definitely one of the best movies this year!
