Or worst, we might have a race on which country will save the Earth, which would be kinda dumb.

I do wish they'd mentioned his dual specialties from the book, both engineering and botany (the crew all had to double up, Lewis was both commander and the geologist, etc). Instead of "I have to grow food on a planet where nothing grows. Luckily, I'm a botanist" they could have easily said "Luckily, I'm not only the mission engineer...I'm also a botanist." Ah well, as adaptations go it's still pretty good.

A little over half the budget is spent on the military. The original purpose of our Federal government was not to give free medical coverage, education, food and housing for everyone that happens to drop by; but instead to provide for defense and even enable Bolshevik college students to openly complain about said defense, without getting their heads cut off by the enemies they wish us to capitulate to.

As an astronomer, I found this movie amazing. In the book, Mark has dual major in botany and mechanical engineering, plus astronauts have to be trained for basic first aid and lots of other things to be able to handle different kind of situations in space. In real life they are more like this movie than astronauts in stupid movies like gravity. One more thing: Neil de grasse Tyson is an astrophysicist not an astronaut; all astronauts definitely have more technical skills than astrophysicists.

Yep. Astronauts get very diverse training, so that everyone could do every job with an acceptable degree of competance. Given how dangerous space is, it's a neccessary precaution. If you only taught one astronaut how to fly the ship and then he died during the mission, they'd all be screwed. Everyone also has two specialties. Mark Watney's was botany and mechanical engineer, so it's kinda guaranteed that he'd be able to fix complex machinery.

Math is really cool. It needs to be glorified more, so that people can realize how good it is and how not boring it can be. You shouldn't give the math in the movie the bad light you did. Also, astronauts must be experts in all Fields. They are geniuses. And I really enjoyed the movie

This is the first one of these that really didn't do the movie justice. After watching this and the commentary on SJ+, I find this to be a classic case of people (as good as they are at entertainment and movies), who just have a fundamental lack of knowledge in the movie's subject matter. Other than the dust storm, this is by far the most scientifically plausible fiction movie made in a long time. NASA, just like any science based organization, requires documentation In this case a VLOG would probably be the most organic and detailed way. If we look at history as an example, the Apollo missions ran for 5 trips to the moon. So using that as a basis for a series of Mars missions would be pretty logical. Each mission would require multiple supply drops (since we haven't invented a method to get 100,000lbs of stuff up to space then to another planet in one go), including the vehicle that would be used to return low Mars orbit. So no it is not a convenient movie plot, it is plausible reality a future Mars astronaut might face.... The one gripe I had with the movie (other than the dust storm) is that they don't use the private vehicles that we have now. SpaceX is banging out heavy lift rockets left and right to send satellites to Geosynchronous orbit, would be perfect for a second or third try at Iris. PS. SJ+ GoPro's can be plugged in to a USB port, then the GoPro battery isn't used. Pretty straight forward, works the same way as your phone does. :D

+Mike Jackman - You remember that scene where they take you to the other Ares lander site? Remember how it was chosen to be placed in a crater? Wasn't that intentional, putting the mission site in a crater to shield the mission site from the kind of surface winds that caused the hole story to take place in the first place?

1:50 To be fair it's not so hard to imagine that astronauts would be given some training on first aid. Also it wasn't like he was performing heart surgery or something, he just took out a piece of metal from his abdomen and stapled the cut. For the experiment to get water a big part of plant biology is understanding chemical reactions in regards to plant life and it isn't so hard to imagine that a botanist would be able to figure out how to make water. I'm not even gonna comment on your assumation that a scientist who's probably got a phd wouldn't know about hexadecimal.

It is still human interaction regardless. Try going no TV, no Internet, and no Human Interaction. That's a much bigger step of isolation than no physical prescence. lookingat what other people are saying and talking to other people means that you are not alone.

+Th3Sh1n1gam1 There was an experiment that people who are isolated from other people eventually lose their minds, they begin talking to themselves, start hearing things, seeing things. We aren't a species that can be left alone truly. vlogging sessions are actually used in military for stress relief.

The Borg Depending on the content of the movie you can get away with a bit more. They actually dropped it twice that I remember in the movie, right after he finishes sewing himself back up and again when he's bringing the dirt in. The book was a LOT more colorful, especially Annie! That gal didn't know what a filter was! LOL
