Hong Kong street food in Tai O, on Lantau Island, is the subject of this episode. In this centuries-old fishing village we eat seafood and more until we can't eat any more, get up close to local culture, and stay at one of the most unique hotels in Hong Kong.

Hi Sam. Only living in HK for 4 years? I would have guessed at least 10 years. It’s a wonder these homes on stilts are still standing. God bless all the families who lives in them. Hong Kong is a pretty special place. It makes me happy and sad when I think about HK.

We went to Tai O last May and it was the highlight of my first Hong Kong trip ever. It’s a perfect escape from the HK’s cities hustle bustle. You can get the nature’s best: beautiful scenery of sea and hills, and most importantly human’s hospitality and curiosity towards others. We had lunch at a nice cafe called Solo and they initiated a conversation despite the language barrier. In overall Tai O is worth a visit.

I recall visiting Tai O as a child for the first time and feeling strangely out of place, my senses and curiosity overwhelmed, by the sights and smells of shrimp paste, sun-dried squid, oyster & salted fish - you captured all of those unforgettable memories here, Sam & Vienne! Thank you! The sugar puffed donuts were one of my mother's all-time favorite treats. Really enjoying the longer, more leisurely paced vlogs.

My wife who's from HK took me there in 2022 and it was one of the highlights of my first trip. The boat trip is a must and genuinely feels like stepping back in time as you get further out and pass the big, old-fashioned Chinese fishing boats. The village itself is especially beautiful at nighttime with the narrow streets illuminated.

Interesting video on Tai O. Perfect for a break from the city. Like the earbuds translator. Must read the AMZN description. The hotel is perfect for a break from TST hotels. Thanks enjoyed the vlog.

Absolutely loved your Tai O vlog. So good to wander around with you and see the sights. I was there in June 2023 and really loved it then, and we went on one of the boats that you went on which took us out into the open water and up to the Macau bridge. It was amazing. So good to see it all again through your eyes.

This one is special indeed as it is totally different from the videos we are used to see about Hong Kong. I missed seeing this side of Hong Kong that looks to be the historical place of what this city used to be. I will be sure to visit this place upon my next visit and I am grateful to Sam and Vienne for this wonderful tour of Tai O village. I enjoyed every bit right from the food to the heritage hotel. Also thankful for endorsing very useful stuff which would be life saving for tourists traveling to places where English may not help much. To wind up, I did see what you wrote about the drone and hope you can buy another one soon.

I love Tai O. It was one of my favorite getaway places when I lived in HK, still traditional. Glad to see the fishing village has not changed much from 30 yrs ago, still culturally intact and quiet. Thanks for filming. The other islands I enjoyed visiting were Cheung Chau and Lamma Island.

I remember those huge fish balls during my childhood, but didn't had it with the curry. Thank you for introducing those translation device, but I need it that can help me to speak the foreign language itself. When I'm in an Asian country that is not own, I found it shy to speak English because I'm not westerner. Ha Chu Beng would be a common treat for Mexican since their foods consisted of Pita Wrap, but don't know how they came up with the name called husband roll. I always like combination of Pork and Shrimp. Sai Yung is also one of sweet baked dishes in Dim Sum. I was hoping he would at least buy some fruits in that one street aisle of market. Living spaces in HK is not spacious including hotel. Lantau Island is not crowded and too occupied so even my relatives living there have decent space in their household. Since I saw the Zhu Hai and Macau bridges, then I guess the Ferry may probably go thru Tai O Villages?? It's a luxurious steak dinner and decent breakfast for Sam back in the hotel. My favorite as a child and now using the shrimp paste is mostly on steam pork bellies. I also like it with squids in one of dim sum dishes. As for vegetable, I preferred more on Yam Leaves than Kan Kung aka Morning Glory. XO Sauce is common on Radish Cake like she said and Rice Noodles Rolls. Glad he bought some dried shrimp and squid or cuttle fish. I would get at least a piece of dried salt fish as well. And what a better way to end with another sweet treat and milk tea.

The Husband Roll sounds amazing! I choose to believe it’ll help me find a husband. Sadly, Sam’s already taken so I’ll have to settle for someone less! Your videos are great Sam and I love that you focus on the people and history. Great job as always!! 👍👍😘😘

Oh, I'm so jealous right now :D Whenever my mother travels to HK I ask her to get me some shrimp paste and xo sauce. Which haven't been successful so far. But one day... I usually use it in a leafy green stir fry. Just put a little bit of it in some hot oil (temperature hot, not spicy hot) with some smashed garlic cloves and maybe ginger, fry it until fragrant, add some choi of your choice, stir fry it for two or three minutes and that's it. Or add it to any dish you think that needs a little bit of umami. But be careful, it's really salty.

Thanks for your great videos. So appreciate your highlighting of what hk is rather than “influencers” showing trendy coffee shops and expensive bric a brac showrooms! The strange thing is that all the foods you say are disappearing in your previous videos are making a comeback as brand new foods for the younger generation. I grew up eating the Chinese doughnuts and it’s instagrammable now as a new dessert snack!
