In the modern era of basketball, spacing has now become (by far) the biggest offensive priority in the NBA. Some of the top NCAA programs -- like Virginia, Michigan, Kansas -- are also now experimenting with 5-out spacing this season. This year for my high school team we lacked a lot of size (our tallest guy was our 6”2) point guard. We went from scoring around 60 points per game last year to scoring around 75. We went 23-3 but lost in the district finals in 5A ball. 5 out is the future.

I think that would be rather sad if everything was a three. The best solution would be if a nice balance can be found/kept between inside and outside play. 25yrs back it was too heavy on the importance of inside play and today, in my opinion, we've crossed over into too heavy on the outside.

@@buckstraw925 I agree to an extent but think about this. How many shorter teams do we have to taller teams? The 5 out era has allowed for even guard teams have a chance to compete

@@mattprice302 Sure there are some positives but overall I think it is a negative. I'm thinking maybe you figure out how to play half the game with a generous three and the rest with no three. Make teams cover both inside and outside with their depth on the bench.

@@buckstraw925 scoring wise you’re Going to lose if they have a nice 6’10 who can post up strong and you have a team where 6’1 is your tallest. The 3 is the only thing going to give that team a chance to win. Believe me we played a team in Florida that was short but they all had volleyball line range and we had 7’0 strong Africans. They could SHOOT!

@@mattprice302 Height has always been a strong advantage in the game and I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Half the game with the three and half without. Both inside and outside play needs to be strong for a great overall team. What's wrong with that setup?

Well in response to Rick Carlisle, The warriors use like a modern version of the triangle. Those post split actions between Draymond, Looney and Curry are a perfect example

Thanks for this. I find 5 out works well for my Under 14's team in building a basic structure that works. We went from every man for himself and all wanting to be Steph Curry to having a role to win offensive possessions "as a team". Teaching basic screens has improved their game so much. Also trying 'flow' to build in the low post block player.

The triangle also started at the college level. Tex Winter created it at Kansas State and took it to the Bulls and Lakers as Phil Jackson's assistant.

I like the way you do the labeling of the action on the court. It makes it a lot easier to understand what is happening. A step up from just the usual circles and highlights typically done in these types of videos.

I like a Dribble handoff/ DHO before going into your 5-Out Motion Offense = Trailing Big above the Top of Key for ball reversal to the other side instead of right back to initial side of operation.

Now watch the Lakers defense from the 2020 playoffs vs Houston’s 5-out small ball, Nuggets hot offense that had Jokic a 5 who can stretch out and pass as good as anyone, Blazers with Dame, CJ and Gary Trent as 3 hot shooting guards that can attack well and Heat when Bam was playing and even Olynyk and Meyers Leonard stretching out. Watch the defense side to it and how to counter it.

Fun fact: my uncle played with Trae young's dad Rayford in the early 90s in Texas Class 4A. My uncle was the biggest guy on the team (6'2) but they averaged about 92-97 points a game I those early years. Why? 5 out motion and transition baskets. I remember in the early 00s when the Suns were playing run and gun and thinking "they're finally catching up" lol

That is awesome! I played against Rayford in Jr High School. I was from Borger and Rayford was a heck of a player, State Champ. JJ Mathis was on that team and he was a good friend of mine latter in college. Also played against Devin Lemons, he was a load. Good Bless Elmatador.

Excellent content.Keep up the good work !Interestingly,Virginia in their recent match-up against the notre dame ,did not run almost any mover-blocker offense but instead chose 5-out with huff leading the way...Opposite the 5-out, Virginia Tech is a joy to watch as they put the ball on the post in almost every possession an try to find solutions through that..!

College has more variation simply from the fact that kids have a lot of deficiencies in their game and so by playing different systems you can take advantage of different kinds of players.

Michigan has been running 5-out sets for a while under John Beilein, from what I can tell Howard has put in a lot of pick-and-roll action to go with all the backdoor cutting and outside shooting

Calipari used the zoom a lot this season and they scored at will . Most zooming up to space for three. Rarely did they utilize the cut

Good video... These strategies will keep evolving as the rules keep changing in the NBA. Bring back the hand check rule and bring in the rule that a shooter cannot move into the way of a downward falling defender (e.g. the way Harden jumps into a defender who is on the downward movement). You'll see the 5-out scheme change again.

Yeah this is old school offense actually. Adolf Rupp used it in the 50s with all his undersized teams. Made it to. Natl game and lost to UTEP. Formerly known as as Texas western who was the much bigger team. They gave UK big trouble from the start. Once they began running the 5 out they scored at will and came back to almost win.

Dallas often has the man in the corner run in for a rebound but nba teams often value transition defence over the uncommon offensive rebound

Offensive rebounds are overvalued. Especially with modern 3pt shooting . It's often just luck where the ball drops after a distance shot

@@JayzsMr I wouldn’t say luck because good rebounders can read shots. But I will agree that modern three point shooting has taken its effect on rebounding. Before it was just select and elite shooters shooting threes now everyone is. Now add average and subpar shooters into the mix and this results in more long rebounds, more air balls and more variables as to where the ball will land. Offensive rebounding will never be overvalued. I get the that transition defense is the more likely and a team should prepare for it but offensive rebounds are gold. Analytics can’t measure/define everything.

Any system is only effective as its players. A Miami Heat going to the Finals using five out, is one thing. But if you don't have a Bam Adebayo and Dragic helping a Jimmy Butler, the Heat are a no match for Lebron and AD! You referenced Princeton. I saw Princeton, in the late 90s, run this, with shooting big man, Chris Young.

Maybe you’ll see another power center that also has perimeter skills. Nobody should be limited to just the paint or just the perimeter. Basketball is evolving just like anything else.

@@generalkayoss7347 Offensive players drive into the paint virtually unopposed because they pick their opportunities; they don't drive regardless of what the defense is doing. Obviously you don't drive towards the basket if Shaq is parked in the paint looking right at you; you drive when he's caught out of position. This offense assumes that you have big men that can shoot the three; Shaq will have to leave the key to guard these guys, and when he does that then you can drive.

5 out has been big since 2010. Pre 10 it was swing/flex/motion for dang near 30 years.

I dunno man, I just miss stuff that isn't a three pointer or a layup. In college it's better cause with enough teams you force some variation, but in the NBA the athletes are so good and so fast that you almost don't need to run sets. It's just gotten so damn boring, running your entire offense above the three point line just waiting for an open 3 or a clean dive to the rim, that's what most of this amounts to.

The NBA also has landing space which makes 3 point defense harder and makes 3 pointers more efficient because of trips to the foul line. Conversely illegal defense is why shooting 3s didn't catch on as fast.

Interesting, I played Handball in my youth and the games are becoming more and more simliar tacticwise. Maybe the nba shoul adapt some ideas there. Would be an interesting experience.

these vids are fire! So much better for people who are bigger then your average bball fan like myself! THIS IS WHY UNC'S OFFENSE WILL NEVER BE ELITE. NO SPACING! My heels will win a lot of games because of our physically imposing bigs. But teams that can fully utilize 5 out ( IOWA) we wont be able to beat!

A tough mid range jumper is worth the same as a layup. Doesn’t make sense to shoot a lot of mid range jumpers unless it’s a late shot clock situation and it’s the best look you can get.

@@brodyclere7317 but you don’t understand playoff basketball when players start playing real defense. A mid range shot can do wonders for your team. A player that can shoot from anywhere on the court is always going to be valuable in the playoffs. Creating a system is good but also let your players create outside your system so that if all fails they know how to get a bucket on their own. Most these players look lost when the system is broken down.

@@WarrenJr1996 players do play midrange but for role players it makes sense to shoot more threes and space out for isolation.Else you see Jordan taking tough jumpers when you have a center ,guards and Pippen all waiting for midrange shots 😂

I personally hate the rockets style 5-out, I can’t argue with the stats but I love passing and movement is basketball at its best

5-out does not mean that there is no passing and players cutting. The problem with the Rockets is that they used 5-out in order to let James Harden play iso ball. They wanted to leave space in the paint for Harden to attack if he wanted, but they did not seem to have anything more complex than that. Harden without the ball just turned off his engine, that is why they weren't more successful. 5-out can have a lot of passing and movement - I think the Mavericks with Luka Dončić are an example of that.

I ran five out motion when I played college ball in 90s for a small school. However we had much more motion. Today’s NBA is five out with a high screen roll at the top and very little movement. It’s obviously highly efficient but just being honest, quite boring

Yes NBA teams are often just lazy and serve their stars . No real Coaches who control their team and just let the ball dominant guard have the ball and run high pick and roll . I hope one team comes along like the Warriors and run 5 out motion and kills these high pick and roll teams

The NCAA 3 point line is closer to the basket than the NBA one, so that's another reason you'll always see more threes in college.
