Happy New Year folks! This Hornby Class 58 was kindly donated to me by Steve along with the Hornby Jinty and a couple of other locos I've still to look at.
Thanks very much to Steve for the donation.

You can tell the difference after you added the extra weight. Sounds a lot more solid, smooth runner too. All the best Bill for 2024. Brian @ The Angels

This is one of the earliest 58s with the original bogie block. Hornby later made a bigger, heavier bogie block to correct the lack of traction - you can tell because the worm gear is encased in the block rather than being visible like this one. My brother had a 90s produced 58 in Mainline blue livery and it was much heavier than our Ringfield motored diesels, was a very smooth slow runner and would pull just about anything we put behind it.

Great repair Bill, something really good and straightforward about the Class 58 as a powerful freight train, designed to work for over 30 years but were sadly withdrawn way before they were far from worn out. I hope your family and you have a happy new year.

A happy new year to you bill . I have two of the class 58 nice models for the time I put a new motor in one and to stop it overheating I took out the vents above the motor bogie and replaced them with a metal mesh it looks a bit different but the heat it disperses is amazing. Keep up the good work bill 👍 all the best 👍

I have read that the Type 7 motor is considered to be too small for this model but your one seems to be fine. Excellent work (yet again)!

Hi, happy new year to you and the family, I finally got my hands on this same loco last year, I gave it a much needed service and now it runs very well indeed, it’s a shame that there hasn’t been a super detailed class 58 produced and to be honest I don’t think there ever will be so I will cherish my very old Hornby model for the foreseeable future, thanks for sharing.

Great video, having watched these over the past year or so you have given me the confidence to service locos of all ages from different years and manufacturers. Thanks for giving me the skills and confidence to do this. I think you need to a sponsorship deal with WD40 😂

Will be putting some weight in my class 58, that’s why I like the Lima models, nice lump of metal in them, and strong motors

Probably the best it's run since it left the factory. Another very interesting video Bill. One thing to bear in mind though those Type 7 Motors can have a tendency to overheat so worth keeping an eye on. It may be a suitable candidate for a CD Motor conversion should the Type 7 fail. Happy Hew Year!

Remember wanting that loco in the Midnight Freight set but heard lots at the time it could only pull about half the wagons it came with

Nice job. It's an amazing performer especially considering it's the same motor as the terrier! I have 4 of the 58s and the only issue I have is that 2 of them stutter over Peco long crossings and curved points - seems to be the outermost driven axle catching in the frog - no amount of adjusting b2b or wheel swapping helps. Only solution is running it faster!

Apparently, wheel slippage is prototypical, and was one of the reasons EWS decided to retire the entire class after less than 20 years service.

Two motors, one each, end and some extra weight...and no traction tyres! Better still, fit two 18mm 5-pole motors in place of the type 7, and even more weight from one end to the other, no traction tyres, and watch it out perform the Bachmann 66! Happy New Year... 🙂

Just been thinking that as it uses the same bogie parts at each end, could you (not you in person) put a second motor in one of these, say using spares etc? Just a thought.
@user-pf3ye6yi9n
@user-pf3ye6yi9n 6 ай бұрын
I also noticed that the unpowered bogie appears to be identical with just the mechanical parts missing. It seems odd in that case that it only has pickups on one side. If the parts are available it would presumably be very easy to add another pickup or go the whole hog and motorise it, particularly as others are saying the motors are a bit small for the size of loco.

The narrower width of the 58 body precluded the use of the Ringfield. Best Hornby engineers could come up with
