Its a tribute to the craftsmanship of Hornby all those years ago that it really captures, in a metal casting, the subtlety of the A4 shape. An object of great beauty. Thanks for showing.

Great to see some more Dublo, especially an LNER loco and coaches. From what I can understand about magnets, the metal is 'primed' as a magnet when the metal is red-hot. When the metal has cooled it is then given its final magnetism in much the same way you do. I would think that as the magnet is primed with its polarity one way, it might not be possible to reverse the polarity without going back to a red-hot state. A Dublo articulated coach set has been in my fantasy railway shed for some time... Thank you for another great video. All the best. Gordon

Such a joy to watch Sir Nigel in action this morning. To think that 60 years ago I watched the real loco gainfully employed by BR while your model was giving pleasure to a model railway enthusiast and I saw the real loco in action again last Nov. while the model still gives pleasure to us enthusiasts today. Something magical in that. I wonder if you could reface the skates with a small amount of solder? They would wear down quite quickly I suppose but I don't expect that you would be running the loco all that often. Great video on this cool wet Sunday morning. Thank you Oscar. Regards, David.

Good morning David, great to hear got to see the real locomotive last year. These are quite wonderful model/toy items with a wonderful feel about them both in handling and use. I've re-finished a number of skates now and experimented with a change in the spring type within the pick up assembly, both of these operations make marked improvements. I've also acquired some reproduction parts as at some point there is going to be nothing left to refinish on a number of the pick up skates I have. Thanks again take care. Oscar

Yes that is a window on the back of the A4's tender, Some had a corridor running through them, to allow a crew change without the need to stop the train. So the little window was to give some light in the corridor!

Good morning Oscar, what a great model Sir Nigle is, it looks stunning you said what a great play life this model has had, well I'd say what a great life its having, because in its twilight years its being cared for by a very good friend. I do believe that and any model that has the good fortune to end up in your care will be very well cared for. It's wonderful to see the care you use when handling them no more damage will happen when in your charge, Thank you for all you do to help preserve the history and models of our wonderful hobby. Another great video, Oscar! The Dublo, Sir Nigel Gresley, is a fantastic old locomotive especially when coupled up to the teak coaches, it would be good to see SNG with a full rake of these vintage beauties! It’s amazing to think that this old loco with its horseshoe magnet is well over 75 years old, a wonderful testament to Hornby Dublo! The teak coaches are a great example of the Hornby Dublo lithograph process, this is vey apparent in your video when the rake of coaches passes through the Dublo station and the reflections created on the slivered windows, its very effective. The combined sound of SNG and the two teaks is wonderful, your going to have to get those extra teaks out to create the full effect. May I suggest a future video focused on the lithographed Dublo coaches and wagons? David

Good morning Oscar . More sunday morning entertainment and most importantly, the footage shows the model railway as it was originally designed. Comments regarding the horseshoe mechanism are of interest especially the wiring. Over the years Meccano would have upgraded the arrangements: previous modifications would have included use of the green wiring, addition of a capacitor and very early versions had the pickup wire soldered direct to the brush tube. Pleased to see that the lighting kit with replacement bulb is operational. I'll see if I can dig you out any more accesories for inclusion.

That's very kind of you I'm glad you enjoyed the footage. When the model came to me it ran but the wrong direction on the controller. With Tri-ang models/motors when this has been the case, I have simply popped in magnetiser the other way around and model just runs correctly. I was quite worried when I put this in the magnetiser to do the same thing, and the end result was just a home from the motor and it wouldn't run, popped it back in the magnetiser and reversed what I had done and it ran faultlessly But in the wrong direction on controller. I have to admit, I put it away, quite frustrated with it, there was no problem with the armature catching on the magnet, There was plenty of clearance on both sides. I decided to turn the magnet over and magnetise it once installed. At that point, it would run in either direction, although the magnet appeared to be in the correct position nice clearance around the amateur sitting in the right place in the clasp, and no undue play in the bearings. I loosened the screws on the clasp holding the magnet and very gently tapped the magnet with a light hammer to alter its position very slightly with this tiny adjustment, it ran perfectly with the controller. I put it in the magnetiser and magnetised it the wrong way around and back on the track it wouldn't run, but with a slight adjustment on the position of the magnet, it would run perfectly obviously in the wrong direction at this point. So I put the magnet back in the way round it was originally, and positioned it visually in the correct place, magnetised it, and then made very tiny adjustment with the hammer again, and now runs perfectly with the controller. The adjustment in position with a magnet is minuscule. In magnetising the horseshoe magnet, I have followed Ronald Dodd's advice and done it at multiple points and down at length.. I recently bought a Duchess of Atholl from the local market, Also with a horseshoe magnet ran in the wrong direction on the controller exactly as above wouldn't run, when magnetised the correct way around tiny adjustment on the position of the magnet brought it back to life. This just has to be a slight change in the position of the magnetic field around the amateur and makes such a big difference. Thanks again, hope the above is of some interest. Oscar

Hi Graham, thanks for the great info and taking the time to watch, I've switched the spoons with another locomotive with less wear and also changed from the older style pick up spring in this locomotive to the slightly later version, the copper/ bronze flat type, These seem to apply much lighter pressure and more evenly across both the pick up spoons. It seems to give gentle pressure and evenly applied to the spoons, makes quite a large difference to the performance. I'm just about to switch the spring in a tank locomotive for the same reasons. Having also been experimenting with solder and refinishing the pick up spoons along with some reproduction spares. Take care. Oscar

They don't make them like this anymore? There is a certain charm about the Hornby dublo system! Meccano called them toys ,long before any snobbery was encountered? I always loved the A4 in particular and can remember playing with the Goldern fleece I think it was called on a friends huge loft layout way back in the day! Although that was a 2 rail set up! Do you have those pullman coaches that Dublo made??

Lovely to see this Oscar. I got out my old Silver King last week. I only have 2 3-rail locos. Silver King and an ancient LMS 0-6-2 with a horseshoe motor that I found on eBay a couple of years ago. I had a Montrose and a class 20 when I was small, but had them both converted to 2-rail in the ‘70’s. I still have them today. I’m seriously thinking about building a semi permanent 3-rail layout for the A4 and « N2 », though I need a few more pairs of points. HD 3-rail is still outrageously cheap in the UK, but unfortunately since Brexit I get stung with import charges and ludicrous postage costs which add at least 50% to everything I buy from the UK. It’s an absolute scandal. Coupled to that lots of sellers will no longer send to Europe. When I see HD Duchesses and A4’s in playworn but good mechanical condition at under £40, but can’t get my hands on them it’s really frustrating. I’m going to be buying some stuff this summer I can tell you, I’ll just get them delivered to my cousins house in Kent,but it’s still very annoying !! I really need tank locos, but this Sir Nigel Gresley is really appealing, so if I can find a reasonable one easily it may well be the next one. Either that or a 4MT.

Good morning Robin, and thank you again for watching. It's great to hear about your plans for a three rail railway, having had a fair bit of 3 rail sitting in boxes for some years, I had really been looking forward to getting to play with it again, it has an amazingly satisfying feel/experience when in use and has been very rewarding developing the railway so far. Sorry to hear about your problems in buying items from the UK, it was not one of our countries greatest moments its un thought out decision in detaching itself from the European Union, sadly, I fear this is going to affect many of us, not just here in the UK for some decades to come and not just in the acquisition of model railway items. Hope you're able to acquire some interesting items on your upcoming visit. Take care. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley I didn’t convert the Duchess of Atholl to two rail, to be honest I’m not sure exactly how to convert a 3 rail model to 2 rail plus I have read up about how to do it and I’m sure I read somewhere that the wheels on both sides of hornby dublo locomotives are not insulated from each other so when converting a model to 2 rail you have to make insulators for one set of driving wheels.

Great video Oscar, super choice of loco. I tried shoehorning a spare prewar body onto a silver king chassis as an experiment once. Came within a whisker but the valances were just too tight. Fyi the teaks come with either the black corridor connections or just plain body colour. I've not yet figured out when the colours changed. Prewar artics and teaks had the black, so I guess it was later. Hard to know. Thanks for the viewing

Excellent video as always Oscar, your layout is really taking shape! That is one of the earliest post war versions of the Sir Nigel Gresley locomotive, looking at the nameplates as well as the horseshoe magnet motor chassis, is the rear pony truck held on by a split pin or a screw, couldn't tell from the footage? It seems to run exceptionally well for an engine of around 75 years old, driving wheel wear doesn't look excessive.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley Жыл бұрын
Good morning David, thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed this little bit of fun with this version of Sir Nigel Gresley. It does indeed have a split pin holding a rear truck in place. I've swapped the pick up spoons and the spring holding them in place for now it's made a huge improvement with it performance over the track work, especially the uncoupling rails. The original spring that provides pressure/tension to the spoons seems to provide very uneven and strong pressure to the spoons, it appears to be very hard and inflexible, possibly would have been more flexible when originally installed, I do have one in another locomotive that appears to be more flexible. So far, I've not been able to find a replacement for this, It would be nice to do so. I can find reproductions of the later coppery/ bronze flat type spring used although I can't find the item referred to as the Distance Piece 11299 for spacing it within the assembly, I'm sure I could improvise something here. Maybe Hornby Dublo switched over to the coppery/ bronze flat type spring as it provides a more even gentle pressure overall. Either way, great fun items to run around the railway. Take care, Oscar
