Hi Jenny, I use a similar technique but with different branded paints but in addition I often use powders made from scraping pastel crayons. After scraping an amount of powder I use a cotton pad to pick up both the pigment and baby powder/talcum powder and rub it onto the model or building as I have demonstrated on my channel . You can deepen the colour by spraying it with a fixative then repeating the application until you are satisfied.

I use to practice weathering on old or inexpensive rolling stock i either had or bought cheap at a show. It’s a good way to practice technique and build confidence.

Great tips from Jenny there - I actually think this achieves a much more convincing result than using an airbrush, especially the flaking paint effects. Lovely stuff!

Really helpful - thank you for sharing; and perhaps consider a similar guide about weathering a turntable (without jamming the entire mechanisms?!).

Congratulations well presented and informative video. Not requiring an airbrush is excellent news. 🚂🚃

My next engine that could really do with a complete re paint is a Hornby O gauge 4-4-O L M S compound clock work engine. I know repainting is seen by some as very bad idea but this has lost most of its paint and is in a very sorry state. It still works after all these years.

I am getting tired of working over lockdown. I only have time to do modelling on the weekend. At least I have made a start on a second station platform and a new tunnel construction has been started.

What is weird is I recommend this sort of think to Hornby. I asked them if they can put tutorials and better sets out there and even bring in things such as a proper well made pacer and not the un finished northern one. Could you imagine a Hornby set with a class 20 hauling 6 mgr wagons while a pacer or class 87 with 3 virgin coaches storm around and double loop of track with both trains containing tts sound and they are not railroad quality but good super detailed quality for a cheap price like $500

It's always hoppers, open trucks and tankers that get done, have you noticed? I've only ever seen one video anywhere on the internet that talks about weathering covered vans; how come no one ever talks about how to properly work-stain a wooden-bodied van?

what Jenny Kirk does here is fantastic for those of us who are Railway modeling on a budget. Speaking of budgets Hornby`s 2020 range is far to expensive and the net result is now is preowned price`s have now gone right up as well ! I for one will NOT buy anything Hornby again
