I was hesitant about getting the dapol easi-fit after seeing adverse comment on RMweb. But will give them a try thanks to your video. So many thanks. Like you, I am intending to fit the Dapols to the ends of carriage rakes only (think I'll keep the Hornby tension locks as will have permanent layout). Also read on RMweb that the Tillig version of the tension lock is better than Hornby version & easily uncouples with magnetic screw driver. But not cheap!

Yes I’d seen that about the Tillig type. I’d be interested in seeing how they work.
@alancharlesworth6824

The Hornby couplings are a poor copy of the Tillig originals. The Tillig ones work really well. Their packs of 50 are very good value - especially if you buy them from an EU supplier like Modelbahnshop-Lippe.

For uncoupling Hornby couplings I use a small piece of metal soldered to a short length of rail. The metal is 12x8mm and the handle is 8cm long with the last 1cm bent to around 45 degrees. I made a couple of these for my 00 layout but happily found they work just as well for my TT120 trains. Love Ted, handsome little fellow.

Two little tips- a very tiny dab of superglue on each end of the Easi-shunt coupling magnet keeps it attached. Also the nearer you can get the bottom of the dropper to the track magnet the better it works- and make sure the dropper is very slightly offset to the side, really just like Kadees in HO and Microtrains in N.

Since I intend running semi permanent rakes, I've gone with the WHWW Hunt elite magnetics. There are 3 lengths so if you mix and match you can get quite close couplings. I've found extra close on the BR Mk1s, close on most stock and long on the rear of an Arnold BR85. Also as you showed they are strong enough that the loco will stall before they fail. I have found it best to trim some to get them seated in the pockets correctly. The Hornby ones are just too fiddly and have a mind of their own. They won't couple on a curve or even on straights if they aren't aligned perfectly, you still need to use the HoG on most uncoupling and they are prone to just uncoupling at will. Great informative video.

Absolutely how I intend to use them. Thanks for the info on suitable lengths for the magnetic couplings

The Dapol ones are cool. I agree expensive though. I’ve not had a problem with the Hornby ones coupling and uncoupling but perhaps over time I will

Cheers Damian. Most of my stock has and probably will have the Hornby coupling for some time. You might also find my next video (due Friday) interesting as I’ve hooked a point motor to the hornby uncoupling ramp and controlled it via Bluetooth ☺️

Big fan personally of the WHWW products, used them for ages, semi permanent rakes work well. For auto uncoupling, I currently use an adapted "end" coupling known as brian Kirby. Works well for auto uncoupling. The Kadee couplings, ive never been able to get the automatic uncoupling to work reliably, similar to the ez shunt stuff from dapol..
@PeachyTT120
@PeachyTT120 10 ай бұрын
Yeah if I could think of a smart way of shunting & auto de-coupling with the WHWW units I would use them everywhere as they’re much more cost effective

@@IronHorseRailways I was thinking maybe glue some steel to the under side of the wagons, have an electro magnet activated under the lead wagon to anchor it in place then use DCC concepts power base to assist the loco separate. I’ve got an idea to test it.

The Dapol easy shunt sound like they are a TT version of the Kadee number 17 buckeye coupling; but not made out of metal like Kadee and Kadee's N scale Microtrain's coupling. Does anyone know if microtrain make a nem pocket compatible for the British N scale?
