This thing could very well predate Aku (before he was spawned from the black mass.) It was immensly powerful, considering a direct blow from Jack’s sword wasn’t enough to put it down. He had to literally redirect the evil spirit’s own attack back in order to vanquish it.

This episode seems incredible but absolutely terrifying. I never watched samouraï jack, so I can't even imagine watching this episode as a kid.

It was worse if you'd watched samurai jack before. This horrifying twist episode came out of nowhere, featuring supernatural phenomena that hadn't been seen before with an unidentified and nameless, unknown entity. The strange almost drawing like feature it takes on, it's malignant and inherently evil nature, it's intentions. It genuinely felt like it didn't even belong in any kind of TV show in general. Completely out of place, and actually disturbing and I love it for that.

I remember watching this episode for the first time when it aired and I'm just sitting there wondering why Jack never drew his sword in the house. You know, the Divinely forged, shadow slaying, evil banishing, magic sword specifically designed to kill creatures like AKU, SHAPESHIFTING MASTER OF DARKNESS and his ilk.

just as he agreed to drink tea and then forgot about the room being an ilussion, maybe he was compelled to not do so, and he did not freed himself, the sword did it for him, right?

Jack’s not fighting a corporeal form. The Demon isn’t able to be touched, it’s a poltergeist when facing Jack. The most physical thing manifested by it are the vines, which is shown by the fact that they have a solid color as opposed to the monster’s sketchiness. And the reason Jack drank the tea was because he WANTED to believe this family was real. Kuni, the girl from before, was doing her best to look happy and normal, which I’m sure did a decent amount towards throwing Jack off. Jack didn’t KNOW there was a demon in the house, he just knew something strange was happening. By the time he’s attacked, all he can do is dodge as he figures out what to do next. Jack’s sword is meant to destroy evil, but it can’t battle something it can’t touch- evidenced in the graveyard episode where the witch is able to possess the sword without being harmed.

I always interpreted it as the girl and her family being spirits at the end of the episode and not just literally coming back to life, but that's just me

Personally, I believed the creature was a soul collecting Oni and destroying it freed them. It doesn't just take their souls but their bodies as well

My two cents is this. I think Kuni died, and I think this house, has been around since Jack's time, if not before. The three members of the family were taken for some reason, and I don't think Kuni was taken, possibly because either: A. She was already dead at a young age, (Hence the shrine and little offering urn) B: She died before the demon could take her. Now what's interesting to note about this, is that the demon captured souls. It accumulated more than just the family's, so it wouldn't make sense WHY it didn't consume the girl if she had been alive or around. In fact, I think it CAN'T harm souls that have already passed. I don't think the girl was there to lure, I think she is just a lost soul, destined to walk the earth. At the end when Jack defeats the demon, the souls are released. In the end we have a bunch of ghosts that are free to live in their house. Another subtle thing I noticed was, the clothing. You'd think that if they were just okay, they're clothes would be dusty, or in tatters or discolored etc. but this is not the case. In the scene where Jack picks the girl up, there is a bunch of dust and some gets on his GI, but we don't see any dust on her. Maybe just an animation choice, or maybe not 0.o Anyway those re my thoughts, let me know what you think =) Stay Awes9me

Personally, I think the Oni spared Kuni to use her as bait to lure unsuspecting victims and took her father, mother and older brother to use them as leverage. The deal being Kuni would lure travellers to her house for the Oni to steal their souls and in return Kuni would able to talk to her parents. If she's not cooperative, the Oni will either keep her family and leave the poor girl all alone, forever. Or she'll join her family in its collection. You can see the sadness and regret in her eyes as she has to do this horrible thing just to see her family again. Even her family are pawns in this operation.

I have never fully watched the entirety of the original Samurai Jack series, videos like this really makes me want to revisit it.

great video dude this thing just blew up over the corse of me watching it haha, yeah me and the homie watched this a while ago just on a random binge late at night what a terrifying episode totally blew me away. so dark and the screams of the monster give me chills what a great halloween episode
