This is definitely GREAT advice for first-time horse buyers! 👍👍👍 Maybe the title should include what's mentioned in the description: "first horse purchase". There is a COMPLETELY different spectrum of 'horse buying' that can also be very rewarding, but may bring additional problems with it (like the ones mentioned) especially for a first-time-horse-buyer. For instance, our last 4 horses were all rescues/reject/abandoned horses; and this can be extremely satisfying and rewarding (for the human and horse!) also, but is definitely not for the fainthearted. The horses certainly can't all be ridden immediately, if at all. Expect health issues. Expect much time spent for rehabilitation or track racing de-learning (for TBs). But please don't dismiss these "reject" horses. They can still be a great partner for their remaining years, and a very, very rewarding experience. Sadly, there's some GREAT horses being sold at "kill-pen" auctions for next-to-nothing, just because the previous owner doesn't want to, or can't care for them anymore. These horses also deserve a good home, and if you know someone with equine experience to come along, rescuing a horse from a kill-pen is also a valid option (as long as you know what you're getting yourself into).

As you shop for a horse, be particular. Prepare a list of criteria the horse must meet: good ground manners, sweet temperament, age, serviceable soundness, etc. Stick to your list! Buy the horse you NEED, THEN fall in love with him/her! I have seen so many people fall for "the beautiful buckskin mare" only to purchase rashly, based on looks! The horse may or may not have physical issues, poor training, etc. Consider those things first, WAY before you factor in the mere appearance. You can't ride looks. Safety first, always!

Back in 2014 I dated a girl who purchased a drugged horse. Luckily the guy who sold it to her sold it as 100% sound so she was able to get her money back after proving he knowingly sold her a lamed horse who had been given some pretty potent pain killers so it wouldn't limp. She bought him before she knew me but I helped her through the legal process of getting her money back after we started dating. When I sell a horse that I have purchased for training and resale I have typically had it for at least a year sometimes more than two years depending on the horse. I generally only do one or two horses per year as that is all I have time for. I have two going out this year, a mare that is already purchased and headed to California next month and a Lusitano gelding that I haven't listed yet because I am waiting for some DNA testing to come back on him from the breed registry. I had the mare for five years and the gelding for one year. We have a law here in Montana that you can't resell a horse within 90 days of purchase unless you have a horse dealer's license from the state. That way people know who is a horse trader/flipper and who are actual trainers that put serious time into a horse. The trainer I know that puts the most time into the horses he sells is probably Tom from Flint Creek Quarter horses. He sometimes puts as much as 6 - 8 years of training on a horse before he sells them. They sell for quite a bit but they are worth it as they have a huge amount of training and experience by the time he sells them.

Can anyone please recommend any other channels like Stephanie's? I really love this channel but it hasn't got very many videos just yet, so soon I will have seen them all. I love this type of horsey content. And I'm not asking for recommendations with any of these specifics I'm about to go on about. Just any good horsey channel recommendations please! But I especially love watching stuff like this of down to earth horsey people, especially strong women out there living the dream, trucking and riding and caring for their own horse and sharing it all with us. I love watching ALL of it, every aspect of horse ownership. My dream is to do what Stephanie does basically. Be a horse owner again one day. But would have to use stable facilities like her and truck to riding destinations and would have to do alot of the work all on my own. Being the only horse person in my family. So seeing just every day people not necessarily people with multi million dollar stables and horses and high level competing and all that, (which is alot of what I get when just searching horsey content on here) honestly standards unattainable for the average horse loving girl who sees what Stephanie is doing as her more realistic dream for the future, so love seeing every day people who own like one horse and are actually out there living and doing my dream, showing how it is doable, strong women showing all aspects to non billionaire horse ownership and good kind riding in the modern world of right now, my true dream of horse ownership. Please any recommendations of inspirational chanels like this for me to watch while I work towards this dream life goal.

Please do take someone whom you trust with you while you are horse shopping. Even if they're not a horse person, they can watch from the ground while you ride (or take a phone video!), and give you their impressions of the seller and the horse's attitudes. At the very least, take someone who's there to help YOU. I'll never forget the horrible feeling of being on a young off-the-track racehorse who ran away with me (not his fault), while two people just plain watched. The horse and I were very lucky to come away without injury. Most sellers are nice folks. Some will have pretty odd ideas about their horse's abilities; some will be unaware of problems that you'll point out; and some will represent their horses poorly in the advertisement. I'm a tall rider on a budget and meet a fair number of "16hh" horses who, ahem, aren't. The horses are their own best representatives.

Yesss x-rays are so important! (I hope you don’t mind if I throw my two cents in- long story ahead) I almost ended up falling for a drugged horse for my first horse years ago- it’s more common than folks might think, at least in my area. This was when I was 15, excited to finally have worked and saved enough for an older “been there done that” horse to ease into caring for one full time. But, being a very naive teenager (not very teen has their head in the clouds, but I definitely did lol) and in the market for my first horse, I was looking at every horse through rose-tinted lenses. Every horse was perfect to me. I was present when meeting the sellers and the horse so don’t think just because you tell them you’re buying your kid’s first horse they’re going to have a change of heart. Thankfully, I wanted to ride him and see how we connected and he was just kinda... meh. He seemed very lethargic and it was challenging to get him to move forward. I was looking for a horse with some whoa to them, but this horse was straight up sleeping at the wheel. Not a good option for me. Biggest takeaway from that experience: don’t rush the process no matter how giddy you are, but rather be cautiously optimistic. Go in with an open mind and positive attitude, but don’t let that cloud your judgement or push any legitimate concerns or questions aside. And of course, sometimes you gotta go with your gut. I ended up contacting another young rider who’s parents were looking at the same horse. They had a vet perform an exam on that horse a week prior because I still was on the fence (like I said, inexperienced with buying and very naïve) but as it turns out the owners lied. He wasn’t sound, wasn’t 14 (try closer to 24-26), and was not suitable to be ridden. Turns out their vet advised the sellers to invest in an updated x-Ray panel because he had a lot of sensitivity in one of his legs and back. Turns out he had some moderate-severe arthritis from an injury he sustained during an unmentioned earlier career in barrel-racing. Poor buddy should’ve been advertised as a pasture pet.

It breaks my heart how common it is for sellers to drug their horses to encourage a sale :( It's a problem I've seen mentioned so many times and I'm terrified of accidently falling for a drugged horse. You definitely have to be on high alert when horse shopping! Thanks for all the wonderful tips! Also, it'd be fun to see you do a video on how to start an equestrian channel! It's awesome seeing how quickly your channel has grown and it makes me feel so inspired to start a horse channel of my own someday, and maybe it'll inspire others to start their own channels too :) Their needs to be more equestrians on youtube!

I have to learn all the care and upkeep, health and habits, tac and equipment!! But I am doing it!! Your videos help greatly!! I decided on a draft since I’m a taller and heavier rider, plus their temperament is what I’m wanting!! Do you have any recommendation for best way to get hands on experience BEFORE buying? Also I plan to buy 2 from a seller with great references. I want them to have a good relationship already together / bonded if you will! Is that a thing??? Thanks for your time.

Hey Nicole! So glad you're enjoying the videos! Sounds like you already have a leg up on the basics, that's great. Have you thought about leasing for a short while? I did a video on ideas for getting experience you may want to watch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5uFrdSIrMzDYJ8.html As far as buying two, I have a friend who did just that and it has worked out great for her. She has been intentional about teaching them not to be buddy sour so she can take one riding or camping and leave the other at home which I think is key when you have a pair. Personally I would be researching this and getting support for preventing it since it can be a real pain/problem for folks I know who've had to deal with it. Keep me posted, would love to hear how things go!

@@HappieronaHorse thank you for the quick reply. I have never heard of buddy sour. I will research. @HappieronaHorse
@HappieronaHorse 2 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. 👍🏼 Yes they definitely need some kind of “herd”. If you are boarding you won’t have to worry about this but if it’s a solo horse on your property then some kind of companionship is essential. Two horses is a lot to start with for a first time owner, that’s another thing to consider in terms of how you want to split your riding and bonding time. I will say I have learned a lot and gotten lots of help by being around other horse owners at the places I’ve boarded at so figuring out how to counteract that isolation of doing it solo at home (if that’s the plan?) would be worth considering too. Would hate for you to miss out on support. 🤠💗

I think for a beginning rider buying their first horse, they should shop for a dead broke older horse. One that is in its mid to late teens. A horse of that age is far more likely to be very tolerant of a beginner's mistakes. So, for a first horse, an older safe horse is the way I'd go. If you stick with horses, your second or third one can be your dream horse.

Was thinking about buying a horse but I don't want anything to do with these people. Does owning a horse cause you to be a terrible dishonest person or are terrible dishonest people drawn to owning horses. Or maybe utube people just over do all of this just to make a video. Cmon man.

The horse world is BRUTAL, to say the least. But it's not all bad; there's tons of honest, loving and caring horsey people/sellers around. If you REALLY want to help a horse you should look at rescuing one from an auction or a [reputable] rescue place; there's plenty of those around. You can get an ex-racehorse for next to nothing; they're called OTTB (Off The Track ThoroughBreds). Some really, really great horses to be had for next to no money....just do your research. 👍👍👍
