In the 80s, here in Australia, there was a big stink about horse meat being used in our meat pies. I was going to night school and dropped into the local milk bar for a pie for dinner. The guy behind the counter asked me if I wanted anything on it (meaning tomato sauce), and I said, "Yeah, mate, I'll have a dollar each way. He swore at me, the shop was pretty busy at the time, and refused to serve me. Some people are pretty touchy aren't they 😂

@@harrisonsdl3180 It began in January 2013, when Irish authorities revealed they had discovered horsemeat in burgers that were supposed to contain 100% beef. The discovery sparked a frenzy of testing and soon horsemeat was being discovered in dozens of different products in countries all over Europe and beyond.

@@harrisonsdl3180 Some years ago, Tesco (and some others) were found to be selling cheap ready meals that were using horse meat in place of beef. To be honest, I really liked their lasagne and spag bol, and when the news came out and the ingredients were corrected, I really noticed the difference!

Is it that unusual in the UK? We can get it in certain restaurants. And there's butchers who specify in horse meat.

It's less about the fact that it's unusual, but more about the fact that the horse meat burgers were packaged and advertised as regular beef burgers, that shit ain't gonna fly with people😂

@@connorlynch428 Well yes, that obviously shouldn't happen. We had that "horse meat in lasagna and beef mince scandal" here, too. But I'm talking about actual horse meat which is labelled and advertised as such. Like mutton and other types of meat are as well. It's rather common in rural areas over here. Still, it's kinda frowned upon to eat "those cute horsies" in more urban areas and amongst certain people, I guess. But imo they're just as cute as any animal people slaughter and eat on the daily.

I've tried certain stuff that would be considered "exotic" meats here in the UK, but for other countries its completely normal, people would enjoy so many different things if they weren't so scared of looking "weird"

I was offered horse steak at lunchtime today. I don't think it's very special, so had a fish gratin instead. In Luxembourg it's often on the menu and in supermarkets.

In Italy horse is super common to eat. When the horse meat scandal happened my Italian family didn’t understand. They thought people were mad because they’d lied and it was supposed to be cow but instead was horse. They said “oh well, still good!” Hahahaha

When I was a young boy, in the late 1940s, there were still shops on some high streets that sold horse meat. I don't know for sure, but I've probably eaten it. And possibly glad of it at the time.

I’ve eaten horse in a little restaurant in Calais. It was very nice. Would eating beef be a problem if we were able to ride and/or race and bet on cattle? The way this planet is going our descendants will be eating far ‘worse’ things than horse to survive❗️

Around the time the story of the horse meat scandal broke I was working in a Sainsburys local, they mysteriously reduced the price of their frozen Lasagne and cottage pies down to 10p each. Im talking cases. I snapped them up and enjoyed them for about a year, Sainsburys was never one of the supermarkets to get caught selling horse meat, funny that eh.

Hate to break it to Brits that missed the memo, but a few years ago they found out that something like 80 percent of the "beef" they were importing was ground horse meat.

Be careful when you to horse racing vourses to catch one. There is always the danger that you catch a jockey in thr net and end up eating Frankie Detori and his saddle.
