Real story: After finishing my military service, I took a job as a cattle rancher. The owner had no problem with me being inexperienced and taught me the basics of horse-riding. During one of the learning sessions i had trouble making the horse listen to me, instead of doing whatever he pleased. Seeing my frustration, my teacher taught me something I'll never forget: " He is not listening to you, because he can tell you are insecure. The commands you are giving him are too ambiguous and lack conviction, thus you dont give him the sense of assurance to trust you enough as his rider". At the moment I heard that, I realized I had lived for so long under an organization (Army) that scolds the horse instead of the rider. Since then, I aspire to give people under me a sense of assurance, rather than seeking it from others

My first girlfriend was a rider . I took care of two of her horses after a while . (Rainy days ) (cold days) and most afternoons I’d clean the stalls and feed . But there was this old horse . Joe He was old and I was young . Green but I showed compassion. That horse never cantered . But after a while he let me learn how to canter and ride. He tossed me a couple times but I couldn’t get angry I felt stupid . But I think Joe respected the way in handled it . Walked him back to the stable . The next day was just me and him. I saddled up and we rode for almost an hour . He actually let me learn to canter. Best feeling in the world. Joes dead but this brought me back .

As much as i think the internet ruined the world , individuals such as yourself are presented to me out of the clear blue, with all the noise thats out there we forget who we are and forget our beliefs and convictions , i was born in '65 so i remember a life of honesty loyalty ,and respect between indviduals. i wasn't a horse person but i knew i was a dog person. i bought a property out west. it had a large backyard, i figured a horse couldn't be too much different to a dog. i was right. within a year i was riding that horse.i could sear it and stop and go. a harness, no saddle. it was basically one of my dogs but ride able. during parties He would steal tobacco and drinks. He would let the dogs sun bake on top of him. Loved that horse.

I will pretend my father is the horse. We almost always argue 5 minutes after a talk. Which is why I don't talk to him much. But I've always said it has got to be a communication issue. He doesn't understand English grammar as I do I guess but I make fun of it and I tell him, "Why don't you understand English? You've been living in the United States for over 60 years! Far longer than I've been alive!" But, I know it's wrong to say. This is exactly what I needed to hear sir. Thank you for this talk. This helps me to remember it's also up to me to speak in a manner he can understand.

When you breed your own, ride your "keepers" forever and develop that relationship, you can tell what they are thinking, what they would be saying. I am in Australia. Tapestry was almost human. Out droving I'd got off for a few minutes. When I mounted she went about 5 paces and baulked. Huh? Camp's ahead, horses in camp, I'm dawdling on the tail. I dropped the reins, gave her a nudge, she turned back and stood over the stockwhip, which I'd not even noticed I'd forgotten to pick up. Another time she jumped off a trail, looking uphill, stopped. I let out a loud cooee, two mountain push bike riders came down braking hard. She baulked one day when I ducked my head to go through an underpass tunnel, clearly saying to me "This is not safe if I have to manoeuvre!" I agreed with her, she was ears up and going through before I ducked. We went topside and negotiated heavy traffic, Your horse is not credited with such thinking, but such becomes the relationship when you read them. And never forget, there is far more money about than horse sense. Money can buy horses and trainers, but horse sense? That comes from reading your horse.

7:00 - I've had workers (sometimes directly under me, sometimes as contractors I've hired) that have done the same. Me not recognizing they were taking my actions as submission(s) to what they perceived as them communicating, they start acting alpha over time - which gets them fired eventually. Sometimes you just can't guess what is going through the head of a person from a different sub-culture. It may be there to learn, but we have work to do, and someone who wants to play power games instead of working will be instructed to leave.

There are some in my profession who could benefit from listening to this video. We deal with crisis and worst days, and knowing how someone is communicating with you in those moments is critical to understand. We must remember compassion just as much as we have clear or direct communication.

good video. Monty Roberts is one of the best horse communicators i have ever seen. i worked in the racing industry for a long time and he taught me so much. He has done amazing work with horses and helped with equine communication. I became very good at re habilitation due to his communication methods.

As a mother of a special needs child and an animal lover, I wish some of the teachers would realize they have a responsibility to try different things to communicate. Some have told me well that's the way I learned in college. Doesn't mean it works with all children. And some animals have an abusive past that you have to work through

Dwayne, this was my favorite video. When I was a novice rider my instructor put me on a horse named Gypsy. A beautiful 1/2 Morgan mare. I communicated with this horse so well She knew what I was thinking and I knew what she was thinking. I LOVED this mare. She knew exactly what I wanted to do and sometimes she wanted to do something different. I was trail riding with my instructor. She decided to go into a full cantor with no warning. Gypsy thought ‘wow, this looks like fun’ so she took off. Instead of pulling back I just let her go and went with her rhythm. I knew what she wanted and I let her have her way. She loved being groomed and treated like a beautiful lady. She wanted me to have a couple carrots for her too, or she would step on my foot if I forgot them. It was so special having that experience. I’m older now and my riding days are gone. I was wondering if you had a similar experience and I can see that you certainly have. THANK YOU! God bless your work

The insight of a man who knows… TY, Dewayne. My friend and trainer just steered me to the book “If I Were To Train A Horse” by Jack Brainard. Early in the book Jack advises (the trainer) to be aware of four behaviors in his/her horse and to deal with it in a timely and appropriate manner: Fear, Boredom, Confusion, and Temper”. Dad would be 100 yrs old if he were still alive. He told me this!when he was a boy. Some times they set a post in the middle of the feed bunk , a horse will eat on both sides of the post. Dad was talking about his dad's work horses.

Communication is key to understanding. Understanding is good, but requires patience. In the beginning was the word of communication and light was made as electromagnetism. Reality itself is a network of communication between material and energy-force wavelengths.
