Join the GVC crew as we explore all that remains of one of King John's castles in Derbyshire. Held by a Saxon thane until the Norman conquest, King John built a stone keep, barbican, chapel and great hall, together with hunting grounds. Vastly damaged by quarrying, all that remains is the ghostly shadow of a once magnificent keep rising out of the stone...

Its good that you did a video of a little known castle,it shows you passion for castles ,not just the great big ones but for the little unknown ones.I has heard of this castle but have never visited it or seen pictures of it,so well done. I have my self been to castles which are in the same state ,in farmers field, hidden by trees and undergrowth .I have never lost sight of the fact that while very little remains of these castles, there was a time when that place of extreme importance .Thank you.

A castle was first known here during the reign of king Stephen. It does not have any military reason for being here so it has been surmised that it was possibly a hunting lodge.Thank you that one is now on my list to visit.

Yes, there's evidence of a deer park in this area. King James is documented as hunting in Horsely park, and the name Horsely park crops up in 1317 and 1417. A lot of the place names locally reflect that too - I think there's a Horsely Park campsite pretty much next to the castle site!

after seeing all the robin hood movies, I realize King John wasn't a cool dude, but to see what's left of all that hard work is rather sad. That being said, your video was excellent. You guys really do great work. Thank you for this.

Thanks James - there were some scurrilous characters around indeed, and the slighting of castles is pretty damning - there must have been a lot of resentment around at the time, points to prove etc.

So cool to be able to explore old castle grounds close to where you live, wish there were more of it left, but its still so fun to explore around the ruins. Great video, looking forward to more!!

Thanks Lori! I grew up in the area but had no idea it was there until a few weeks ago, so naturally we had to stick our wellies on and find it! Such a shame it’s been left to fall into disrepair, but an amazing find in the local woods!

What a shame this castle hasn't got more of its structure just like many other castles. Really enjoy these videos. You both are straight to the point, tell the history and stories (even the ghost stories) and it's great to see that you really are enjoying the experience. I'm proud to say I'm from a city of great history. To see how old some structures are and that they are still here today is amazing. Thanks for these videos and can't wait for more 🙂

@@joanneouchterlonie8166 I could recommend so many. Alnwick Castle Tutbury Castle Arundel Castle Warwick Castle Bodiam Castle Bamburgh Castle Rochester Castle Are some of my favourite castles. Not just how they might look on the outside but also the inside, the history they've had. The battles, the famous people staying there, the ghost stories. Also i know its not a castle but I think Hampton Court Palace is amazing.
