Horus Heresy: 3000pt Army for Under $500USD

Today we’re going to look at the new Horus Heresy Battle Group. This box is pretty good value, especially when you consider the relatively high points cost of the units in the box. I thought I’d have a look at the new Battle Group boxset and talk about how I’d go about turning it into a 3000pt army for an absolute bargain. I’ve also included a segment on how I go about choosing STLs for doing some 3D Printing to enhance an army as I plan to put it together.

Unfortunately there is only 5 of the support squad weapons in the box. But this is vid is excellent, well done!

Great post, thanks. If cheapest 3,000 point list from this box is the goal, here's what I'd do: - Take five of the marines in this box and build them as a Praetor with Plasma Pistol & Power Fist and a four man Command Squad. Attach the Land Raider Proteus as a Dedicated Transport - Make the Praetor your Warlord and take Pride of the Legion - Build 3x 5 man Veteran Squads (one for the Compulsory Troop slot, the other just Troops) - Build 2x 5 man Support Squads, one with Plasma Gun, one with Rotor Cannon - Build the Deredeo Dreadnought With options etc, that comes out to a massive 1,682 points just from this box alone. So buy another one. That's a second Praetor (not a Warlord) with Command Squad and Praetor, bulk the Veteran & Support Squads up to ten men, and another Deredeo into the Deredeo Dreadnought Squad. $336 (assuming 20% discount). Done. Far from optima, but an amazing starting point for adding and customization.

Really nice video! Would totally watch more like this focused on the other legions. Particularly the 3d printing portions.

Thank you! Yeah I was thinking that. Doing a 3D printing 'best of' for each of the Legions. Would definitely be a lot of fun.

Slightly off topic but with the box containing MkIII Marines and 5 plasma weapons you can make plastic Interemptors from the Dark Angels’ Dreadwing to fill one of those support squads instead of buying the resin kits. Ordered the box as soon as I was able, still torn between adding it to the AoD starter box for DAs or painting this as Iron Warriors, but the fact using this box for a fledgling Chaos marine army for 40K would fill my troops slots is leaning me towards IW.

Great video and 3d printing stuff is a great way to spice up /outfit your legion for much cheaper. I am debating whether to pick up this to go along with my AOD box but that would be a ton of tact marines

I get that 3d printing large amounts of stuff for a force gets an eye roll from some folks but man, a year with my resin printer, can’t imagine engaging in this hobby without it

Thank you! I legit believe every Heresy play should either own or have easy access to a 3D printer. Only reason not to is living in an apartment where you don't have anywhere to run the thing, noting the fumes and such.

About to get into Heresy with Night Lords but haven't been able to find the battle group box set anywhere unfortunately, so I guess it'll be Age of Darkness for me 😅

For the special weapon sprew (3:40). Iirc they clarified in the reveal stream that it is one sprew (5 of each). *Edit: On the GW product page it is listed as having one sprew.

Assuming 3d printed goodness a Company of Bitter Iron List is a good fit if you're using the BattleGroup as a starter. You can get a big block of Immortals, I am no Ebay scalper but i managed to get a NOS spartan for a very good price to put them in. Grab a frame of Cataphractii for some Morlocks, i did a surprisingly effective conversion using the Shrek Ears harvested from a Levi grav Bombard (add them to one of the Volkite guns or whatever, everybody has about 5 billion Heavy Flamers which you can snip the cone barrels from) to make grav shredders or just 3D them i guess. Then you should have enough to outfit the Morlocks and the Immortals. The Morlocks and a Praetor/Character model of some description can go in the Land Raider. That's already some real punch and serious pointage and you can do whatever you wish for the rest and you'll have a bunch of bits to outfit other infantry with.

Kimble's fanny pack would be for 2 and 5, since traditionally mk3 doesn't get assault marines because it's considered too heavy or some shit. They'd look sick with them though.

I've got about 6k points of heresy night lords, gonna use this to start a loyalist dark angels army because i want to run a "corswain and 10 deathwing companions in the battlebus" list, and this will be the perfect start considering i already have corswain and the companions, I just need the battlebus and the rest of the army. Though it's already way more expensive because these are genuine deathwing companions

Perfect for Dark Angels! I'd be looking to run some other Armour 14 packed with close combat monsters in that list to make sure you're dispersing your threats. Or some decent pinning to keep your opponent's anti-tank unit's heads down.

No 3d printed arms for the cataphractii? The kit only has 2 sword arms that could hold the axes.

Sorry to save, unless you chop up those Deathsworn Terminating helmets, they wont work because of the size of the head socket in the plastic kit. You would have to cut off the back and cut it in half vertically

You could also supplement the 10 GW Cata termi bodies with some truescale bodies from Tortuga Bay. They're pretty much designed to accept different head swaps. Grab or 3d print your weapon loadouts and pauldrons and bam, you got your 10.

@@notnubilous3804 Yes you could technically do that, however to get the truescale bodies from tortuga you also have to buy the heads, shoulder pads, and legs from them. Meaning you would just have ten more terminators. A better thing to have purchased would have been two texture plates from Green Stuff world- the small chainmail and wolf fur, along with some epoxy. Then he could have converted the whole army with like $30 worth of stuff, making it all uniquely his own.

@@notnubilous3804you could also do none of that, since the Cataphractii kit is among the 3 largest terminators made in plastic alongside Deathshroud and the new Leviathan models. They’re the second largest termies
