I recommend trying the Horus Heresy Legions card game, a cheaper way of getting into the setting. It's both in Steam and mobile and one of the few good 40K mobile games, it's also getting a sequel of sorts set in the current 40K setting.

The HH rules are basically 7th edition 40k with slight tweaks. If that was your favourite incarnation of 40k's ruleset, you'll probably love this game.

Looks that way. Right now it's Loyalist vs. Traitor (those appear to be the only factions on the GW site), but I can easily see Eldar Craftworlds, Orks, and Dark Eldar hopping in for some fun in the future. Unfortunately, Tau, Necrons, and Tyranids will have to sit this one out because they weren't around for this era of Grim Dark. If you're an older edition player I could see dusting off an old codex from the same era and plopping them on the field. I personally plan to use my Cadians as stand ins for Imperial Army forces.

Its true los. You have to have the body of what you want to hit visible so no shots glancing off guns/base scenery and it only allows the exact models in view to be hit rather than assuming you can hit the entire squad based on seeing someones gun holster.

Well that’s disappointing. True line of sight is goofy to me also the terrain that GW sells and the terrain that hobby shops typically have isn’t built for true los. The rest of the game looks really fun so should still be a good time.

AP values reflect the ability for an attack to punch through armour completely. Low (AP1) is best, High (Ap6 (well, technically AP-)) is the worst. Imagine a Space Marine with armour save of 3+. If he gets wounded by a weapon with AP 4-6 his save is 3+. If he gets wounded by a weapon with AP 1-3 then he has no save at all. Not sure about AP against vehicles, other than AP1 gets to add +1 on the d6 roll for determining damage.

HH tabletop has been around for years...see Forgeworld.

GW lost a lot of "real" SM players with primaris trash. This is so much better.

What's regular 40k? For many folks HH resembles editions 3-7 out of 9 editions much more than the current 9th ed. Templates are no more complicated to work than a tape measure, reactions add a much needed 'alternating activation' mechanic, armor facings means that vehicles are not just oversized tokens.
