You can do a lot of great things with rum. Make rum balls, soak a chocolate cake, pour it into a glass of cola, and of course, entertain pirates, but maybe my favorite thing to do with rum, especially around the holidays, would be to butter it. Enjoy!

My parents used to make this for their Christmas parties, back when everyone put on their party clothes and went from house to house. They used a combination of butter, sugar, spices and whipped cream. They kept the topping in the fridge or on ice. My sister and i used to sneak spoonfuls of it when we were little, of course that was before we used to sneak the rum in later years ;). Thanks for the memories!

Not that I would ever want to be that guy who makes multiple positive comments on the same recipe, on different dates, but here I go. You might also like, as a serving/presentation option, to froth some half and half, wth an espresso type steamer wand, and then pour the mixed, and almost complete creating, into or on top of the frothed half and half for a light and beautiful warm cozy and oh so excellent option for a night cap. You might also froth the creamish thing with a sprinkle of cinnamon in the half and half, and maybe a touch of honey. Just sayin. Thank you so much for all your work We love being so entertained while watching, then making, and finally enjoying so many of your recipes.

Excited to see this! I never had a real recipe for this, just added a pat of butter to some rum and milk, maybe with a cinnamon stick or dash of nutmeg. It wasn't great, so haven't made it in years and years. Now I see why it became a classic (my version was not up to that standard). This recipe is definitely coming back into my repertoire! You can use an over proof rum such as 151 or Wray and Nephews overproof and in place of the vanilla you can use Captain Morgan’s spice Rum. As far as dark rum goes I like Myer’s or Appleton’s. Be careful on the Wray and Nephews a little goes a long way. Wray and Nephews tastes different from other rums too. It has a buttery cashew taste that I think would go great in this recipe.

Since we first got together, up until she passed away, every winter my wife would make what she called a "cocoa toddy." Fun fact, Paul Revere drank rum on his famous ride. It was pretty common in colonial America. After the Revolution, it fell out of favor because the Caribian Islands were still under British control so importing the raw materials from a former enemy was seen as unpatriotic. Plantation rum is a good brand. Not too cheap or expensive but has a great flavor.

Optional but mandatory. Will definitely use this phrase at the next meeting I prepare. Will make sure to send the invitation super early in the morning, before anyone has had their coffee - lol

Made this last night, my wife and I loved it! Making 12 right now for a socially distanced gathering tonight. This is the 4th Chef John recipe we have used, all of them great. Thank you Chef John!
