To clarify, when David said 'Fullerton' has the best Korean food I think he really meant Buena Park and a little bit of Fullerton since they are neighboring cities. Buena Park is the 2nd Koreatown in the OC after Garden Grove. Beach blvd + Malvern has H-mart, Zion Market, and Hannam with like 5 KBBQ spots in a 1 mile radius. You go down to Beach + Orangethorpe and you have the Source OC with Korean stores, cafes, food court, karoake, billiard, golf, kbbq, sooljib, etc, etc, etc.

My mom isn't a very good cook but she tries. She grew up in an orphanage and cooking wasn't really taught to her, she was given the assignment of caregiver to the babies in the orphanage.

My mom also isn’t a good cook but she still cooked at home featuring a lot of vegetables, meat and fish. and somehow convinced me to clean my plate and not be picky about taste. Now I’m the tallest person on either side of my family at 6’5. My brother is only 6 foot and is an incredibly picky eater that won’t eat vegetables or seafood. She also let me drink only soda as a kid, which is a questionable decision that was probably the cause of my acne as a teenager, but I guess you can’t win them all.

Thoroughly enjoying this whole episode. ‘Imperfect meals made with perfect intention (cooking for loved ones) merited a vocal outburst when he said it. Cheers to change and basking in the raw craft of doing that wild thing that you originally entered into the room to do. Viva wild and crazy creations supported by the deep pocket impact of people here for a good time.

David is so right about people being afraid to embrace weird. There are so many times when I mention ideas to friends or family and their first reaction is always “no, thats weird.” It doesn’t matter if I have a stack of empirical evidence that the market is craving this product. They will always be opposed to it, which is wild because I am hyper critical of my own ideas. Basically, the only way to prove people wrong is to buckle down and execute the idea. Only when it slaps them in the face will they finally realize that you were right.

SHHS 93 Korean here... it wasn't always the case. Fullerton/Buena Park started trending more Koreans when Garden Groove was losing ground to the Westminister neighbors. Now, seems like 'kids' like me are returning to be closer to their parents.

Just curious, is there such a thing as an authentic American food? cause I feel all food in America was imported from immigrants...
@WARnTEA

Hamburger, Lobster Roll, Cheese Steak, Corn Dogs, Chocolate Chip cookies, Smores, Biscuits and gravy, Buffalo wings, Banana Split, Pecan Pie, Ranch dressing, Tater tots, Chili, Cereal. Basically anything that uses Cream Cheese, since cream cheese was invented in the US. The list gets much longer if you are willing to include food that was invented in America by immigrants or inspired by foreign foods. Fajitas, and Chimichangas come from Tex-Mex. California Roll, orange chicken, and general tso’s chicken were all designed specifically to suit the american palette, and are responsible for a large part of Japanese/Chinese food’s popularity in the US. Deep dish pizza Then you’ve got a shitload of stuff invented in New Orleans which was a combination of many different cultures. Technically fried chicken was invented in africa, but it was perfected and popularized mainly by american slaves. Hot chicken is another specialty form of fried chicken that is distinctly american. American barbeque is another thing that technically existed in others places but was perfected in america, and no other places do it like americans do. I’m sure you could probably even group some more basic food combos as distinctly american, like the american breakfast of eggs, bacon and hasbrowns/grits. Also, Steak and Baked potatoes is a pretty american meal. Finally the traditional Thanksgiving meal is very authetic American food. Cranberry sauce was invented in america and turkey was domesticated in North America over 2000 years ago. Before being domesticated, turkeys that were found all over the world were much smaller birds that could fly. There are a lot more american foods than this, but its typically pretty hard to track down everything as we take a lot of stuff for granted, and america has popularized a lot of foods that originated elsewhere. Do you include food invented in Hawaii? Even though their food is often a fusion with some asian foods. Does hawaii even count even though it isn’t apart of mainland US? What about foods invented in Puerto Rico, does it being invented before or after america acquired them matter? I think the trend you will find with most authentically american food is that they were almost exclusively created during the great depression because it was cheap, created during the gold rush as a way to cook preserved food, or they were created/popularized because it was fast to eat on the go. America is responsible for most “junk” food. Basically the only reason you think all food is imported is because food categories are mostly just countries. Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, etc. American is also a food category, but only to foreign countries. To americans, american food is just food. No one in america is advertising their food as American, just like no restaurant in korea is advertising their food as korean. In korea the restaurants specify the type of korean food they make, and americans do the same. If you want a burger you say, lets get a burger, you don’t say, lets get american tonight.

@@WARnTEA Some interesting info and perspective. However, your statement that fried chicken was "invented" in Africa is a weird kind of misinformation that continues to circulate. Not saying you made it up, but you should stop repeating it. As soon as anybody looks beyond biased memes, and starts looking into food and agriculture history, it's painfully obvious this narrative is not only false, but it's also impossible. Chicken has been fried in East Asia for many hundreds of years (ancient manuscripts contain recipes). If that's not enough, how's this for a meme-destroyer: chickens are not native to Africa. They were introduced to Africa much later by European colonizers. That said, it's completely fair and accurate to say that Africans probably fried chicken as soon as chickens were introduced to Africa and that African Americans created an American style of (awesome) fried chicken.
