Changing stoves in the dark when it's freezing cold.
Head to squarespace.com/jaylegere to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code jaylegere.
My old oil barrel stove is on the move. I am setting it up outdoors as a fire pit bbq. I now have a new stove. It's way smaller but I am really hoping it will be more efficient. As you will see everything doesn't go as planned, but it all works out. It was super cold when I woke up outside, but my sleeping bag was incredibly warm. Delicious food and hot coffee are icing on the cake.
My new website is LIVE! www.jaylegere.com/
Thanks to Squarespace for teaming up with me and helping me get my site off the snow!

Need to get an induction fan for the top of the stove. Yes a round damper air access for the front as well as a chimney damper is essential for that stove.

A flat wood stove gasket will also help on your stove door. It will make a huge difference in your draft. And also check for leaks around the flu where it attaches to the stove. A popsicle stick and some stove cement works great to fill in the little cracks around the flu and the stove collar. Stay warm, safe and healthy.
@jaylegere

I think I may try the flat gasket. Hopefully it sticks! I like the stove cement idea too!
@bwcok7947
@bwcok7947 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaylegere the gasket cement/glue works great and will hold for over a year's worth of use. Be careful not to put too much glue on or it soaks into the gasket way too much and turns it rock hard. You need the gasket to stay pliable and seal around the door. Very easy process!
@zionkid420
@zionkid420 2 жыл бұрын
This was my thought as well... Along with perhaps they designed the size of the draft hole to be small on purpose knowing their door and fittings were also drafty. I would totally go bricks outside the box. A flat gasket for the door. And seal those joints up. That stove will be a very solid unit for a long time.
@bwcok7947
@bwcok7947 2 жыл бұрын
@@zionkid420 the big stove needed the same TLC. And it would bank the wood for 10-12 hours per load.

Jay, fire bricks up the sides preserve the stove and probably retain some good heat too. Lots of stoves also have a gasket to seal the door. Really, the damper is the key. After 30-40 years of my dad going through tons of wood with no damper, we finally wised up. My Dad’s wood consumption cut by 1/2 to 2/3

The baffle for the stove will greatly help with efficiency of the stove. Also the amount of stove pipe you have inside the tent is another reason that it puts out so much heat. As for how often you get up in the night to feed the stove is a function of the stove box volume and how warm you wish to keep the tent. I let my stove burn out overnight, I personally rely on my sleep system to keep me warm. However my overnight camping temperatures usually only dip to the -20s Celsius. Rarely will I encounter -30sC.

Looks like the only thing missing is one of those kinetic wood stove fans. I find that it helps to just circulate the air. the airflow isnt all that powerful but they seem to help distribute some of that heat through out our hot tent a little better. It hardly takes up any space and it seems to help me gauge how hot my fire is by how rapidly it's spinning. It's also kinda hypnotic to watch the fan silently spinning as you can hear the snow falling outside.

I find a damper in the chimney gives one more control. I find if u can get the right night wood, if u can leave it in the round and get a good coal bed then put a large round log full length in and fill from there. I have even used not totally dry around my large round stock. It keeps the burn down but a great coal bed so with the damper and stove control you can get away with feeding it only once through the night. Great vid. J manitoba Canada

You may want to add some insulation around the door seal as well. It really draws the air even with a dampner adjusted the door may leak too much. Man it puts out the heat. Several like it on the CND market. Being square it's not much smaller if any than the old barrel. Interesting. I've kept a fire all my life. Brinf a new section of pipe with the dampner already installed, they can be a PITA out in the field getting the holes lined up.
