“Hotels edge out because sometimes hotels got a pool, hotels got a gym, hotels have a bar. A hotel can have a business center which is just a room with a printer.” - Dulcé Sloan
“There are some places that you want to go where the hotel is going to be quite a drive from where you actually want to hang out, whereas an Airbnb has the ability to be much closer to the things that you want to do” - Josh Johnson
It’s hotels vs. Airbnbs this week on Hold Up with Daily Show correspondent Dulcé Sloan and writer Josh Johnson. #DailyShow #HoldUp #Podcast

If you’re staying in a tourist heavy destination (and I’m speaking from experience having lived in three of them), please stay in a hotel! Locals in touristy areas often struggle with finding housing options because so many landlords only wanted to do Airbnb. Staying in an Airbnb does not help the local economy. The only people you’re helping are the company and the landlord who may not even be local themselves. Staying in a hotel supports people who feed their families by working at the front desk, housekeeping, security, landscaping, etc.
@TheKim369

I have also lived 3 in touristy heavy places over a duration of 14 years. In my experience, the hotels are more often owned by very wealthy people, or companies. They pay their staff the bare minimum, and stuff their profits into their pockets. I know my staff well, and their families and pay a fair bit more than required, and I have a big garden and donate the food locally. I have provided several interest free loans to staff to purchase vehicles and modest homes. I remember birthdays and graduations and honor funerals (with time off and pay). I am local and spend my money locally. Our town has super cheap hostels for young travelers who want to work illegally and steal a job from a local to pay for their adventure vacations. And local people tend to live with family.

@@TheKim369 Okay? That's nice and all, but your response doesn't make what I said incorrect. I've worked in hotels and it paid the same as any other customer service job except we got tips. Plus, you are not addressing the fact that AirBnb messes with the local housing market.
@TheKim369
@TheKim369 Жыл бұрын
@@Fumi007 I thought your point was that hotels provide for local people, while airbnb's do not? I also noticed you didn't address my point about young travelers depriving local people of jobs. Also, investors buying up homes in order to airbnb is actually against the rules. It's supposed to be your primary residence that gets rented. Perhaps those rules should be enforced? And how about landlords who buy multiple homes to rent out long term, not through airbnb? Should the law limit home ownership to one per person, with no renting allowed? What about married couples, should they be allowed to have two? What about apartment buildings, should those be disallowed - one owner owning multiple units? If we disallow renting, it won't help the people in the service industry, I suspect it would only make the housing situation worse - not everyone can afford to buy a home. I know of plenty of hotels that provide simple staff housing, especially in more remote locations like near national parks. Perhaps that should become the norm? Why should a little old lady, who follows the rules, be deprived of a source of income in favor of hotels? Oh, and lots of municipalities have placed strict limitations on short term rentals. Hotels are owned by very wealthy individuals or corporations. Airbnb is a way for regular people to get a piece of the pie, personally, I prefer that to limiting the income to the very wealthy. Providing cheap staff housing is a whole different game. I suspect that most airbnb people wouldn't want to open their homes in that way for peanuts. Did you know, New York is full of empty buildings, purchased by investors who would rather wait than rent for peanuts?

I’ve worked in the hotel industry for over 2 decades And I couldn’t agree with you more. I am glad you brought up the housing issue. I live in South Florida in a big real estate investment company and several others just like them have bought out all of the apartment complexes and single-family homes tripling the rent and not fixing anything. South Florida is a touristy destinations. I would much prefer to stay in a boutique hotel than to know. I was renting an Airbnb from one of those big real estate corporations. They are crooks and thieves. And for the other girls comment, yeah just make sure you don’t stay in a Mar-a-Lago or any other Trump Hotel… I’ve had friends that work there and I live close by. He is notorious for not paying his employees.
@HH-gv8mx

@@TheKim369 yes and those New York investors have now come to Florida and bought out all of the apartment buildings in single-family homes in low economic areas. So run down apartment that’s normally $950 with all the appliances no washer and dryer leaking pipes and moldy ceilings… These investment companies want $1800 for unit that was $950 at its highest. They would rather leave these units empty and wait for the people to come in and pay 1800 then rent them to the nurses and single moms and construction workers and electricians that need housing and could pay 1250. They are greedy terrible ghost companies and they are all coming from New York.

Former hotelier of 27 yrs here. Choose a hotel for your next stay! There are many types to choose from that will suit your needs. With a hotel you have recourse, with an ABB you only have the “owner/operator. I don’t trust the security measures and knowing that someone can walk in on me or be in the house when I’m out makes me anxious. What about hidden cameras. Who’s inspecting them to make sure they are up to code? Electrical code, sprinkler code, fire alarm code. Do ppl even check to make sure the smoke detectors work? These are things that you don’t have to worry about when staying @ a hotel. They are inspected annually by the state, annually by the brand and annually by AAA if the hotel is a subscriber. Bars/restaurants in hotels only pull about 20% of its own guests annually so It’s viewed simply as an amenity- like the pool or the wifi and not there to be a significant anchor to your stay. UNLESS it is deemed a destination bar and attracts the local public as well. ( my last rest/bar was a “Sam Adams” and pulled people who loved the brand. Therefore they will always be closed early. Hotels for the win!

Gotta say, we loved this one because Josh seems to be grinding again! I like hotels because of the anonymity and the convenience and security. I'm with Dulce's argument about communities losing rental stock too. (Over 100 in just our little Haight/Ashbury neighborhood. I don't love hotel rooms near the ice machine, parking lot, other noisy junk but it's all temporary.

Rented an air bnb once.... The hot tub water gave my kiddos a bad skin infection, even on the soles of their feet. They couldn't walk for a few days. Turned out the owner's contracted cleaning company just used bleach instead of chlorine. As in the owners decided not to used a legitimate pool cleaner company to maintain the hot tub. That doesn't happen in hotels. There are standards. Haven't air bnb'd since.

If we travel with the kids for holidays then we usually get an Airbnb because we want a home away from home. So it needs to be a big apartment or a house with enough bedrooms for everyone, kitchen and at least 2 bathrooms, all for us. If it is just us the adults or we travel for business then hotel it is. Breakfast included is a must.

I like hotels for all the reasons stated. Restaurants, bars, swimming pool, maybe a hot tub. Perhaps a breakfast of some sort is included. Also very often if you're going to a city for an event or show the hotel is in the middle of the action. If the event is big enough to sell out the hotel and you're in that hotel there could be some camaraderie with other hotel guests and you could make new friends. At an air bnb its just whoever you are traveling with. Some air bnb hosts are now leaving a chores list like wash the dishes, make the bed, vacuum before you go, take our the garbage, water my plants... I'm on vacation, not your maid. I stayed in an air bnb one time. It was nice. But of course the owner has areas blocked off because it's still their home and you realize you're in somebody else's space. I felt awkward what we could eat or not eat in the kitchen. Or maybe they'll leave some treat for you, but if it's something you don't eat you may look rude for not taking some. I'll just stick with hotels unless the hotel where I need to be is booked solid. But then there is probably another hotel right there.

I don’t let folks have guests at my Airbnb and there’s plenty of room, I don’t want parties! I only allow 1 person per room. Expectation management is important for Airbnb. If you want folks at your beck and call go to a hotel and spend $300-400 a night. But for $45 a night. come stay at my house and deal with it. We keep it minimal because it’s easier to clean and folks complain otherwise.

My formula; if I'm travelling locally/regional, I go with Airbnb - more so because I know the area/culture, it's easier to make the right call, understand logistics etc. When I travel internationally, hotels 100%. I know what to expect (as hotel SOPs are likely to be standard across the board. Also, the impersonal-ness off it somehow feels more comfortable when I'm in a 'strange' land (idk how else to explain it). And I like that I can get all the information I need at the front desk. *And yes, this was the most civil debate yet. Are y'all okay? 😂🫢

Every AB&B within forty miles required a three to seven night stay, full payment immediately with no possibility of cancellation and cleaning fees of $60-$120. Oh, and none of them offered an early check-in, meaning I would have to re-schedule the procedure.

Yes! My husband and I have been blessed with one lovely child, yet like you we like Airbnb as the cooking facilities are the game changer for us. We also enjoy eating out but paying for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily takes money away from other activities we'd prefer to spend money on and enjoy whilst on holiday. We also only book Airbnb's where we have the entire home to ourselves. I want to have breakfast in my dressing gown with my family, not in front of a 'host'. I like my privacy. Also, well done keeping sane with 5 little ones. My bestie has 4 and she's amazing, organised and still has a great laugh in all the chaos. You are amazing. Plus us Mums of one love getting together with big families as our kids love it and don't get to go first, have to share and comprise etc... It's wonderful and we appreciate you. Take care.

For me, it ultimately comes down to Airbnb's policies. I've had two hosts cancel stays within 2-3 weeks of my trip. I had to scramble pretty last minute to find another option. On another occasion, a fire went through the town and the town was evacuated. Airbnb's return policy pretty much leaves it up to the host, who was willing to give us half of what we paid for a 7 day stay. Airbnb was willing to give us $75. I would never be put in that situation with a hotel.

I don't know about Airbnb's in the US but where I live most are decent, clean, you can choose a place for yourself or sharing a space. You can ask the host what they offer, sometimes you have to bring your own towel but again, it's your choice and you're already informed. Hotels? Meh? They are the same... one from the other, unless you're rich and they're ALWAYS more expensive than an Airbnb. For the price of a room I've been able to rent a small place for my family (6 people) to comfortably stay close to a beach, with a swimming pool. It wasn't a resort, true, but it was as depicted in the pictures and exactly what we needed at the price we could afford. As a low income... usually broke person, I much prefer Airbnbs and have yet to stay in one that's someone else's house or apartment. A small note. I don't know how it is here where I live... haven't heard much about it cause those who rent already have a space like a vacation home. But still, check out the area so you're not motivating people to ruin the lives of those just looking for affordable housing.

The safety net at AirBnB is terrible, if you have a problem or the host is crazy, you gotta do heavy lifting and keep calling AirBnB for days, the company's policies are built to get you to leave them alone and do everything yourself. when i had a host nearly assault me last week, i was told by every AirBnB agent i talked to that i should have vetted the listing better. you get a lot more bang for your buck with a hotel, with way less risk, and people can actually help you. the folks in the AirBnB call centers, bless their hearts, can't do a thing.

Now I have never been in an Airbnb so right away hotels is my Jam. I've been into more hotels than anything I've gone to St Kitts Marriott Hotel, I've been to a hotel in Florida in order to go to Disney World that one time. One thing I liked about Marriott was that for example when it was time for breakfast boy you go downstairs and you saw a whole variety of cereals and stuff to choose from and it was all catered to your needs and what you wanted whereas in an Airbnb I can only imagine it's not as catered it's like what they have at the time

Team Hotel for me. I like not having to worry about anything. I've seen and read some true horror stories about ABB. Also I'm especially neurotic when visiting a home belonging to anyone other than myself. I was taught that you should never allow yourself to be noticed through belongings while in someone's home. If I ever stayed in an ABB, I'd spend my vacation making sure that all of my stuff and anything belonging to the owner was put away or exactly how I found it. No thank you! Give me a hotel where I don't have to make my bed, can leave a pile of towels in the bathroom and all my stuff put out onto the counter!!

Definitely prefer an AirBnb. I like having my own space. I check the reviews and pics and choose the best area that's closest to my destination. if I'm going to a location for a reason. If I just want to chill with my family or friends for an extended stay, AirBnb is our best bet.

Hotels of late be tripping with raising prices and terrible service. However, I was soiled on Airbnb when I rented one in Hawaii. I had budgeted my trip at a certain cost but when things didn't work out, I ended up doubling my hotel costs. I booked a 5 star studio in August with no air conditioning and Airbnb did not refund me anything because the air conditioning icon was not checked.

Airbnb all day. I haven't stayed in a hotel in awhile. Plus Airbnb are cheaper. I think the lowest I paid for an Airbnb was like $700 for 10 days in Colombia. The highest was probably around 2k for 7 days in Italy

I stay in hotels a lot and would still choose them over AirBNBs because I don't want to add cleaning and grocery shopping to my list of things to do while I'm traveling (whether it's for business or pleasure). But even with that, I'm annoyed that hotels have used COVID as an excuse to cut back on services like towel washing and daily room cleaning. They know the pandemic had little to do with it. They've been trying to cut corners for a while now. They need to hire more cleaning staff and pay them a decent wage. Too often I see one or two workers turning over multiple rooms. That leads to them also cutting corners when it comes to sanitizing.

I've been in some nice AirBnbs. My friends have too. I'm for both, but I find Airbnbs more personal and great for community inclusion.
