To anyone saying "it's the Astros", I challenge you to look up their record for the 1998 season. They won 102 that year with this lineup, Wood threw one of the most dominating pitching performances of all time. His stuff back then was incredible.

Good if it's the fastball. Bad if it's the curveball because that more than likely led to him eventually blowing out his elbow and needing Tommy John surgery. Many killer curve balls over the years have led to elbow injuries (i.e., Mike Hampton, Tom Gordon) But, before the injury, what a power pitcher he was.

And legs. When the legs grow tired, the arm overcompensates for the lack of drive from the pushoff of the legs. I'm a former massage therapist and know that lack of treatment of knots in most pitcher's arm muscles and shoulders contributes greatly to the numerous injuries. Knots that don't hurt (aka, the "tired" or "dead" arm) has potential muscle and/or tendon tear written all over it. Whenever I hear a pitcher complain of a tired shoulder, I know a torn rotator cuff is at great risk of happening. But, the human elbow was not anatomically built to throw a curveball, especially in correspondence with 90-100 mph fastballs mixed in. The ligaments will eventually wear down.

Even when he was old and washed up he still had a great curveball. I saw one in person where he came in relief and the batter almost fell down looking at the curve. That was the nastiest pitch I ever seen live.

Strikeouts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 13, 14, 17, 19, and 20 swing and a miss. Strikeouts 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 18 caught looking. Strikeouts 15, and 16 check swing.

This was a good lineup; they hit .280 on the year and won 102 games. Clemens got his 20 against the '86 Mariners (.253 BA, 67 wins) and the '96 Tigers (.256 BA, 53 wins)

2 HOF players in BIggio / Bagwell. Another near hof player in Alou. Howell hit 20 HRS as a part timer that year. Bell ended up 7th in BA that yr. Guietirrez led NL SS in BA and OBP. Very good offensive team, Hou actually was only shut out 3 times that year, twice by the Cubs.

I think Wood's performance is more dominant than Clemens per your reasons. BUT Clemens didn't get to face the pitcher's spot to be fair and had to face the DH. That's impressive by Rocket. Wood was the most unhittable creature to ever step on the mound in the history of modern baseball that day in my very biased (Cub fan) opinion.

Overall one the best and most dominating pitching performances in all of baseball. And that '98 Astros team weren't a bunch of scrubs either. They won 102 games that year.

+Andy "game score" is the stat "Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score: Start with 50 points. Add one point for each out recorded, so three points for every complete inning pitched. Add two points for each inning completed after the fourth. Add one point for each strikeout. Subtract two points for each hit allowed. Subtract four points for each earned run allowed. Subtract two points for each unearned run allowed. Subtract one point for each walk." The highest game score for a nine-inning game in the history of baseball is Kerry Wood's one-hit, no walk, 20-strikeout shutout performance for the Chicago Cubs against the Houston Astros on May 6, 1998. His game score was 105 (50 + 27 + 10 + 20 - 2). The maximum possible game score in a nine-inning game while allowing no baserunners is 114, possible only if a pitcher goes nine innings while striking out every batter he faces and facing three batters per inning. The pitcher receives 50 to begin with, and loses no points because there are no hits, walks, or runs of any kind. He receives 27 points for the 27 outs, and 10 points for five innings completed after the fourth inning, for a total of 87. In this "perfect score" scenario, the pitcher would have to strike out every hitter he faced, netting him an additional 27 points, for a grand total of 114.

I was at this game, 10 rows back 3rd base, it was an unforgettable performance. The fans were going crazy 😜. He KO’D the side like 4 times, it was the most dominating pitching performance I’ve ever seen. I’ve had sports collectors offer to buy the ticket stubs. My Dad got the tickets from the dealership. These Astros were the toughest offensive line up they ever had, and they didn’t cheat. The OG killer bees. Crazy to watch biggio take a swing like that from being so fooled, and then bagwell walking right out the box looking before strike 3 was called. This guy was on another level.

Alright, I know I'm replying 3 years later or whatever, but literally, there are only 2 Astros left from the 2017 team. Good Lord, son! Can we please let it go? Please??? And I know this is weird, but I happen to be a diehard fan of both the Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs. I love Astros because I am originally from and mostly grew up in Texas City, Texas, about 45 minutes southeast of Houston. I love the Cubs because my stepdad is a lifelong fan of the Cubs, and he told me all about their history and I started watching them with him, and I was hooked. We really bonded over the 2016 World Series. So, yeah, I love the Cubs, but I wish everybody would lay off Houston. Especially because I'm pretty sure there was speculation that both NYY and LAD were also cheating at curtain points. Idk if that's true or not. But the Astros were just the ones that got caught. Baseball is like... THE cheating sport. It's literally said to be tolerated in baseball. Anyways I just got off on a big ole rabbit trail there. Sorry. LoL.

I watched this game on WGN. I remember it clearly. I watched so much baseball that my daughter thought the word for TV was "baseball". Hey Sonia, want to watch baseball? Then she would point to the TV and would say, "watch baseball." Now, she is in college and has little interest in baseball, but will go to games with me anyway. Ah, for the love of the game...

Wood was the first pro I ever got an autograph from. It was when he dropped down to Iowa for some development before going back to Chicago. Pretty memorable for me.

I was at this game and still have my ticket stub. Me and two other friends were seniors in college and we went to see what all the hype was about with Wood. In line for bleacher tickets and a dude pulls up and gave us free box seats behind the Astros dugout because his friend couldn't go. Definitely the most memorable game I've ever been to. Getting Mark Grace to laugh by yelling that he could join us in the stands because the kid had the game by himself. The rain in the middle innings when everyone was hanging out under the overhang and we stuck it out in the first row. The energy and crowd building up, people leaving to buy the leftover tickets from scalpers outside, the stadium filling up more and more as the game went on. Just an incredible experience.

Number 13 was my favourite (about 1:55 in). Jeff Bagwell at his peak (and a monstrous peak it was), and Wood blazes a fastball by him like it was nothing. Bagwell was late on it by a day and a half.

The fact that the ERROR Kevin Orie made at Third wasn't reviewed and revised into a no-hitter is criminal. That was not a hit. One of the most dominant pitching performances of all time. Frankly more impressive than someone who throws a no-hitter who needs 20 defensive gems to happen behind him to get it.

+BassasaurusRex in a time before you could review almost any play thats just how it was, the official scorer felt it was a hit so he made it a hit, back then i think you could only review in very certain situations, like someone slapping the ball out of your glove in a playoff game. even home runs that were touched by fans werent reviewed, like that one yankee home run where it wouldve been at most a double but the kid grabbed it over the wall.

That was quite a lineup the Astros had with Alou, Biggio, Bell, Everett, and Bagwell. They won 102 games that year, but that day they were completely dominated except for a cheap infield hit off Kevin Orie's glove.

The greatest pitching performance in major league history. No pitcher has ever had that kind of command of three different pitches for a complete game at this or any level. Kerry was a shooting star brought down by injuries.

I actually saw this game when it happened. That Astros team was flat out awesome that year. They had five guys that were batting at or near .300. After Bagwell's 2nd strike-out, I remember my dad saying he's going to throw a no hitter. Just because of the umpire's generous strike zone. There were a few called strike-outs that were clearly off the plate, but the pitches were so prodigious; the umpire was like fuck it. I've seen a lot of impressive pitching performances, but nothing will ever approach this. When a pitcher can put together that kind of movement with that much velocity, he become virtually un-hittable.

The legend of Wood was born that night.I believe he's the only pitcher in MLB history to strike out as many hitters in a game as his age!

All 20Ks are great but I think this performance is the best considering the ball movement, hits, runs and age. This is the best.

Injuries got him after this rookie season. He missed all of 1999, came back in 2000. Had a few more solid years. He also had a great season as the Cubs closer.

Notice that the ump was calling a lot of clear balls as strikes early, which forced Houston to swing at a lot of crap pitches. Still a sick performance but that ump had a generous zone.

+degenerate82 You're right. Not to take away from that incredible performance but, for instance, that pitch at about 1:13 just wasn't a strike.

No doubt, Seems to happen when guys are in the K-Zone....Sherzer just whiffed 20 of my Tigers LOL and his stuff was dirty but the strikezone was HUGE. Doesn't take anything away from Wood though. Ump was at least consistently calling outside pitches.

You get the calls when your stuff is rocking this fucking hard. Also you can expand the zone by hitting the ump in the face to knock his brain loose at the start of the game.

The best pitching performance of all time IMO. Kerry Wood won the 1998 Rookie of the Year Award in the NL, and this 20K complete game shutout was a big reason for that! He had the best pure talent of any pitcher I've ever seen. He was right up there with Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson (at the beginning of his career) as far as ace quality stuff! Absolutely amazing and dominating! And the Astros were good in 1998. Bagwell and Biggio are both Hall of Famers now. Well, Wood made them look helpless on this day!

His stuff was straight ridiculous in that game. Looked like he was throwing a boomerang when that curve drops like 4 feet out of the sky. And this game wasn't against a garbage team like a lot of other great pitching performances; Astros won 100 games that year and hit well.

Prior had a great season going his second year. He was on first with a ball hit to second base. He ran and tried o get out of the way of the charging second baseman but collided and flipped over him landing on his pitching shoulder. Mark laid on the infield for a while before being helped off the field. The previous season he lost only 1 game after the all star break and during the next season was sensational until the injury. After that he had trouble with legs, achilles and shoulder. That collision cost him everything.

This in my opinion was the best game ever thrown by any pitcher. Kerry Wood was a beast. His stuff this game just froze batters. Kid K is the best pitcher in Cubs history.

its not a suns fan! It people wearing jerseys with the #34 for Kerry Wood . In this case it was Barkley's 34 jersey but others are doing the same thing during that game.
